The Lockwood brothers are supposed to be able to survive anything. Their dad, a hardcore believer in self-reliance, has stockpiled enough food and water at their isolated Nevada home to last for months. But when they are robbed of all their supplies during a massive blackout while their dad is out of town, John and Stew must walk 96 miles in the stark desert sun to get help. Along the way, they’re forced to question their dad’s insistence on self-reliance and ask just what it is that we owe to our neighbors, our kin, and to ourselves.

When Fiona's family moves to a new town to be closer to her older sister's figure skating club—and far from Fiona's close-knit group of friends—nobody seems to notice Fiona's unhappiness. Alone and out of place, Fiona ventures to the town's library, a rambling mansion donated by an heiress. And there she finds a gripping mystery novel about a small town, family secrets, and a tragic disappearance. But the day Sophie meets Fitz, a mysterious (and adorable) boy, she learns she’s not alone. He’s a Telepath too, and it turns out the reason she has never felt at home is that, well...she isn’t. Fitz opens Sophie’s eyes to a shocking truth....

Publisher's summary
A New York Times bestseller!
Soar into a breathtaking world of heroes and unicorns as you’ve never seen them before in this “unexpected, suspenseful, and heartwarming” (Kirkus Reviews) middle grade debut perfect for fans of the Percy Jackson and Eragon series!
Skandar Smith has always yearned to leave the Mainland and escape to the secretive Island, where wild unicorns roam free. He’s spent years studying for his Hatchery exam, the annual test that selects a handful of Mainlander thirteen-year-olds to train to become unicorn riders. But on the day of Skandar’s exam, things go horribly wrong, and his hopes are shattered…until a mysterious figure knocks on his door at midnight, bearing a message: the Island is in peril and Skandar must answer its call.
Skandar is thrust into a world of epic sky battles, dangerous clashes with wild unicorns, and rumors of a shadowy villain amassing a unicorn army. And the closer Skandar grows to his newfound friends and community of riders, the harder it becomes to keep his secrets—especially when he discovers their lives may all be in graver danger than he ever imagined.

Story
In the endless forests of the Wild, humanity scratches a living by the side of the great Godroads, paths of crystal that provide safe passage and hold back the infernal tide. Creatures lurk within the trees, watching, and plucking those who stray too far from safety. In crystal castles held aloft on magical currents, seven timeless royal families reign, protecting humanity from the spread of the Wild and its demons. Born and reborn into flawless bodies, the Deathless are as immortal as the precious stones from which they take their names. For generations a fragile balance has held.

This book has been a huge hit. I read it in a paper form and wanted to hear my favorite characters come to life. David Dawson does a beautiful job of that and I can’t wait to listen to book 2.

FUN
What a great young adult read! I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this as a pre-read for my 7 yr old. Age appropriate fantasy for her with just enough grit for her to enjoy, -she likes "scary" and I have a hard time finding a balance of scary and not too scary for a seven yr old. She'll love this. The writing was engaging and the narrator did very well with it too. I would definitely recommend this book.

Skandar and the Unicorn their might be the best book I’ve ever read!
Usually I enjoy the books I find on audible but this book wasn’t just enjoyed it was an amazing, thrill seeking, and hard to compare.
It’s hard to recommend anything to a book that is full of such adventures and possibilities but there is something to keep in mind while writing: Try not to change the characters the fit the books change the books to fit the characters so that people can connect with the characters.
(Although it’s fine to let them evolve.)
I made this review because I just wanted to express how much I love this book and how well the author made it.

Son's favorite book
This is my son's most favorite book. He loves it so much he wanted to share it with me. We have loved listening every day on our way to school and can't wait for book 2 to come out. We appreciate this different take on unicorns. Also great character development - bullying, friendship, family issues. excellent plot twists.

It sounds strange, but it’s AMAZING!!!!
If I could convince every one I know to read this book I would. And I will. The premise sounds strange, bloodthirsty unicorns bonded to 13 year olds so the can share their magic. The book has major Eregon/Percy Jackson vibes with the addictive qualities of Harry Potter. The main character is a boy, but he is surrounded by these amazing and tough females, so it Carries a better vibe for female readers then the books I listed above. Truly, take a chance on this strange sounding book and let it become one of your new favorites. Like it is now for me.
