Lo que los oyentes dicen sobre Silence

Con calificación alta para:

The Story Revolves Around A Private Investigator, Jack Till, Who Is Tasked With Finding A Woman Named Wendy Harper Whom He Had Previously Helped Disappear. The Narrative Is Filled With Unexpected Twists And Turns As A Pair Of Assassins, Portrayed As A Dysfunctional Married Couple, Are Also Hunting For Wendy. The Book Delves Into Complex Character Development, Particularly Exploring The Darker Aspects Of Human Nature. While The Suspenseful Narrative And Engaging Mystery Elements Are Praised, Some Readers Found The Ending Abrupt And Certain Plot Points Implausible. The Pacing Is Also Criticized By Some As Being Slow At Times, With The Storyline Becoming Convoluted. Overall, It Presents An Intriguing Thriller Centered Around Themes Of Mystery, Assassins, Disappearance, Private Investigators, And Twisted Relationships.

SILENCE

I really liked this book. I purchased this as a Daily Deal but it is certainly worth a credit had it not been on sale.
There are enough reviews and the the publisher's summary so I won't restate the book's details.
Although an earlier book, Thomas Perry never disappoints with his excellent writing style. His characters are believable, likable and flawed. Even the good guys. But not flawed enough to make the reader dislike them.
Michael Kramer does an outstanding job narrating.
This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Good story, but not as good as the Butchers Boy se

The narration was spot on. The story had it's good moments, but I would put it down for a few days, then come back to it. Never had the desire to sit and listen for a few more minutes when I'd pull into the driveway. Not too interested in Jack Till. He was just OK.

Nice job, Kramer

I confess I really didn't have high hopes for this book, but as it got going, I found it to be an interesting story line. I didn't realize that many locations were being mispronounced (seems to be a big issue for many reviewers). For me, Michael Kramer is a fantastic narrator of suspense, so I enjoyed it. Even the ending (though sort of dark) was good.

Silence almost golden

Thomas Perry, the creator of the Jane Whitfield series pulls a switch, and with another stolid character...Grizzled Ex Cop with gimmicky crosses to bear...has to find a someone he helped disappear. Mayhem ensues. Body count rises, reader is taken on a road trip along California's Highway 101. Nice scenery.

Now the problem: if you are Tantor Media, and you are having an actor narrate a book which takes place in California, with important sequences taking place in Los Angeles, would it be too much to ask the actor to at least learn how to pronounce place names which have made it into the general lexicon. Streets like La Cienega and Sepulveda are mentioned on TV all the time. In a pinch, I understand Los Angeles has actors who do good narrations and know how to pronounce local street names.

And yeah...Simi Valley is not pronounced SEMI.

Problems like this occur thruout the reading, and detract from...er...the authenticity of the mileu Perry spent a lot of time creating. Because...yeah...he is an LA writer.

A real page turner

Couldn't put it down; some very nice twists that I didn't really see coming, lots of interesting characters; one of the best detective stories I have read all year. The narrator did have a few problems with place names, but he had a unique voice for each character, and overall I thought he did a good job. The book left me looking for more!

Believe it or not you will root for the perps

Silence has a very intriguing and complex plot and I binged on it. This is the only book I have ever read in which I was rooting for the perps as well as the good guys. That takes clever writing and makes me want to read more of Thomas Perry's books. However I certainly could have done with a bit less back story on the main characters. To me the backstories were the slowest parts. But I loved the ending! Perfect!

This book was recorded in 2007 and yet to this Californian's ears I had some real problems with Kramer's pronounciations of streets/towns. I cannot not believe that Tantor Media did not redub the mispronunciations of the reader. Here is the list of mispronounced streets/towns:
La Cienega (C-N-ega accent on "N")
Sepulveda (Sa-pull-va-da accent on "pull")
San Rafael (he did get it right once--San Rafell--but wrong about every other time)
Simi (seamy)
San Luis Obispo (San Lewis A-bispo).

I realize that most people live in areas without Spanish names but if you are a reader for a book set in California you might want to bone up on pronunciations.

Mixed Review

In a lot of ways, I liked this book a lot. Good narrator, good main character. Interesting story. But just about everyone else in the book (except Jack’s daughter who has Down Syndrome) is evil, evil, evil! Kind of unrealistic. But I would try a sequel.

Good read

You fell into these peoples lives and felt for them. The time of the book gave you depth of character. Only issue the girls voice by a male reader is not that great. But loved it and will read more from the author!

Another tasty multi-layered character cake

Thomas Perry again captivates with not only the exciting plot but the typical character discovery he presents in books. I am always amazed at the attention to detail he provides that helps the reader inhabit different characters. This struck me at one particular point, one character was discussing the quality of another's hands giving an evocative picture of refinement.
Michael Kramer nailed it. The story crackled.
