Publisher's Summary

Sometimes, you shouldn't go home....

For years, the abandoned MacKenzie mansion remained hidden in rural Wisconsin. Rumors and stories of apparitions, odd noises, accidents, and strange deaths in or near the property were enough to convince the townsfolk it was haunted, and they stayed away.

Lucas MacKenzie and his brother, Nate, know nothing of this when they inherit the property and decide to bring their families to Wisconsin for a major renovation project with HGTV stardom in mind. As they tear out old fixtures and open shuttered windows, the house begins to reveal secrets of a terrible past, and it soon becomes clear the MacKenzies are in grave danger. In the end, only one person can save them.

Horrible narration.

I couldn’t get past the narration. It sounds like she is just reading the book...not acting. Very nasally voice that I just found uncomfortable

Great book - atmospheric, smart, surprising story

I'm not going to give any plot points away, but I really loved this book. There are surprising twists and turns, good characters and the story flows well. The weaving of improbable history was handled very well. Some of the more tragic moments reminded me of Richard Matheson or William Peter Blatty. I read a lot of ghost and supernatural novels and this is the best one I have read in a very long time (some of the independent supernatural fiction on Audible is atrocious.) I really hope there are more novels to come from Cailyn Lloyd. Performance by Hillary Huber is really good also. My only criticism is very minor - please find another word for "canted" - the overuse of that word was (only mildly) distracting! Overall - loved this book!

I couldn't get through it.

The reader couldn't do male or female voices. Female dialog was mostly read in a "valley girl vapid" voice and her male characters sounded like she was trying to gargle her own throat to get deep enough.
The story itself was meandering and couldn't find a happy medium between "nothing happening" and "preposterously supernatural." The characters were unremarkable and unmemorable.

Good, but a little random & annoying

Overall the concept and story is good. The narrator is really good.
The story is a little random in its characters. Like, I really wasn't expecting modern day wizards. That's not really how the description reads and its not exactly my cup of tea.
Also, the main character annoyed me in just how long she went back and forth with the whole denial and acceptance thing. It just kept going back and forth for way too long and way too many times. Made the story feel like it was dragging at times and just readdressing the same things over and over instead of actually getting into the haunting.
That all being said, it's not the worst book and is worth a listen if you like horror and magic.

Not great

I never ever write reviews, but this book was so time consuming and so disappointing that I felt the need to warn others. I'm a huge fan of the horror genre and have read or listened to many classics, as well as contemporaries like Darcey Coates. I especially enjoy a good haunted house book, which is why I was initially drawn to Shepherd's Warning.

The book started out like your typical evil house story, slowing adding mysteries the unexplained, but eventually the story devolves into a convoluted mess of unfinished ideas and reality TV-like drama, Unfortunately, the plot is sooo slow due to repetitive and incredibly uninteresting dialogue that it took me almost 2/3rds of the book to realize that it was going absolutely nowhere.

The narration of this book did not do it any favors either. I've listened to 77 books now on Audible and this is the first time I had to speed up the narration (to 1.5) because it was so painfully slow. That said, the voice acting was on par with most other audio books I've listened to, so I have no complains there.

All-in-all, everyone has different tastes and while I personally did not enjoy this book, based on other listener's ratings, there is a good deal of folks who did.

Good book

The book is good there are some places in it where it seems like it was written for kids not adults but it definitely is NOT a children’s book. Its just in some places I felt like I was reading a Barry Potter novel. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone.

OK, story lines introduced then ignored

The central theme was a cut above normal for a haunted house formula. I especially enjoyed the creativity of a character like Shepherd. The problem is connectivity. Characters you think might be important are not fleshed out, I lost track of what she really had in mind for Ashley until the end. . As a debut novel I would say it is worth a credit.

KAZ 🇬🇧😃Ok book 📖

This was supposed to be a horror story but some of it just doesn't make sense to me There's a haunted house apparently with strange stuff going on but then there's people from the past who are hundreds of yr's old popping up from there I honestly didn't know what was happening The narration was ok until she attempted an English accent which was bloody awful The storyline weak & some of the character's just got on my nerve's so I'm giving it a 2 out of 5 NOT Impressed with this book at all 🙄🙄 Just so confusing definitely regret buying this rubbish

Great ending

A well structured and paced story with a great setting and exciting characters. I was shocked over and over at the ending, a wonderful way to wrap-up a wonderful horror.

A hodgepodge of modern and gothic horror themes

I really wanted to like this book but it was impossible. The whiny and irrational characters, a bizarre mix of modern and gothic horror themes, long-winded story-line peppered with occasional underwhelming scary scenes, the list goes on.
