Publisher's Summary

Once upon a time, a dark evil crept into my kingdom, stealing my loved ones and the happy life I knew. The world turned against me, and I swore to become stronger, to keep myself safe.

Once upon a time, there was a handsome prince, hair dark as ebony, skin as pure as the freshly driven snow, and I became the only one who stood between him and death.

Once upon a time, our stories intertwined, and now, healing my heart may be the only way to save us all from the evil that threatens to destroy what little we have left.

A lovely gender flipped retelling.

Note: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. I'm a fan of retellings so this book caught my eye when I was browsing my weekly audiobookboom newsletter. I requested a copy and was provided with an audible code within a day. Thanks for that! I enjoyed this gender swapped retelling of Snow White a lot. It's not just a straightword retelling of the original classic but takes inspiration from many fairy tale themes while keeping the tone of Snow White at its core. There are many twists to the original characters and settings which all feel both familiar and fresh. The lead female character was very likable and that made the entire experience a lot more enjoyable. The story doesn't just dwell on her relationship with the male lead character at the expense of all others but makes sure to portray a very positive depiction of sisterly love. I really appreciated that because I love seeing loving and positive relationships between women. I thought the romance was well done even though I admit I was nervous throughout about (view spoiler), so it turned out to be unjustified. I will definitely be grabbing hold of the other books in the series. I really wish they were available in audiobook format as well but oh well.

Love -- of all kinds -- conquers all!

I love this story! In flipping a fairy tale -- where the prince needs rescuing instead of the princess -- it would be easy to be overhanded, to show the prince as a weak character and the princess as basically a man in a dress. This story doesn't do that at all. Both characters are strong, both have flaws. They help each other. There are also a number of sisters of the princess, each with their own distinct personality, strengths, and weaknesses. The author must have sisters because the story shows the sister relationship exactly as it is -- you bicker amongst yourselves, but just let an outside agent try to threaten you! (I've got great real-life stories along this line, but you're not reading this to hear MY stories!) In the end, no matter how serious the threat, true love -- both romantic and familial -- conquers all. I finished the story feeling warm and happy. It was a nice change of pace given the popularity of distopian novels these days. I received this audiobook for free at my request and I voluntarily leave this honest review.

Loved. It.

This book was sensational!!! Absolutely. Sensational. I loved the fairy tale twist and while it played homage to stories we know, it stood completely and vigorously on its own. Rae was a fierce person determined to be more than a pretty face. Prince Leo was a pretty face but in constant danger. The sinister persona, aka the bad guy, was incredibly icky. I cheered when all was said and done. I can't tell you enough how great the narration is!! Harris' characters were separate and unique. Her tempo was perfection. I absolutely loved this listen!

Triggers - rape scene

subtle yet the author obviously has no clue of the psychological effects or reactions of this. I think one of the sisters tell yhe victim “not all guys are likd that”. Wtf with the reviews saying younger readers can listen to this?! Due to Rae’s ‘glamour’ in which she is perceived as a male stable boy who the prince is drawn to, it seemed to have an LGBTQ undertone. Which doesn’t impact my rating; but the writing/story depth is grossly glossed over and seems to ve the typical push-pull-play script. This isn’t one of Starla’s finer works and I’m totally ditching the series.

AMAZING

I absolutely loved this one! I finished it in one sitting, because I just couldn't stop! Rae was a great character who had a lot going for despite all the challenges she faced. I've fallen in love with this author and her writing. The story is so beautifully pieced together, and different despite being a "fairy tale." I never was bored, or let my mind wander off. I loved the bit of romance in this book, and how it slowly developed. I also loved the family relationships and how those changed and strengthened. All together this was a 6/5 stars for me and I would absolutely recommend to others. *I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

Captivating Story

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and all opinions expressed herein are my own. This story is really entertaining. It is a touch of Snow White and Cinderella but completely flipped. Beyond this being reminiscent of these fairy tales, it is so much more and a story in its own right. Instead of a princess waiting for her prince to save her - we have a strong heroine in Rae who works with her sisters to save Prince Leo when he is endangered by the King. Rae is smart, magical, and realistic - she is not perfect. She views herself as "damaged" and frequently as unworthy of love - it is so easy to empathize with her and root for her when Prince Leo takes his time to befriend her and love her. Not only is Rae a three-dimensional character - her sisters and Prince Leo are well-developed characters. This is a captivating story for the entire family. The narrator, Lauren Harris, did a stupendous job. She was able to distinct voices for all of the characters - which made it easy to distinguish them and brought them all to life with distinctive personalities. I would happily listen to her again.

Awesome Reverse Snow White Retelling

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. I love this author. I discovered her a couple of months ago and have not been disappointed in anything I've read by her. This reverse retelling of Snow White was so unique and awesome. It was not at all what I expected and I loved all of it. I loved Raelynn and Leopold! She is a strong female character. The narrator was awesome too!

Brilliant Retelling!

This is the most brilliant rewrite of Snow White I have ever come across. I never thought about what would happen if the genders were swapped, but this was awesomely different than anything I could’ve imagined. I think my favorite part about this was that it wasn’t a love at first sight retelling but instead a real relationship formed between the Prince and Rae. This story is studded with tons of interesting aspects like witches, magic, and love. This is definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan of fairytales. Also, the narration was wonderfully done. The narrator was able to create a wide range of voices that made it easy to distinguish between characters. This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Voice acting as it should be

This is the first book I’ve read/listened to by this author and I would jump at the chance to listen to another. I liked the flipped fairy tale. It was not a direct flip of the original Snow White story, there were interesting twists that had a shadow of the original story, but took their own tangent. Other fairytales snuck in and made their mark as well. Definitely a fresh, new take on familiar storylines. The relationship between Rae and the Prince is thankfully more down to earth, And this is not a love at first sight story. This is the first book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Lauren Harris ) and I would happily listen to another. This is what voice acting is all about! She wonderfully brings the characters to life with their individual personalities. A really good narrator can make you forget you are listening to a book and instead makes you see it, full colour, in your head. She accomplishes this. There are no explicit sex scenes, excessively gory violence or swearing. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily left this unbiased review. Please feel free to comment on whether you found my review helpful.

Mixed views

I actually liked this book to begin with because it was different. In this story we have prince Leo instead of princess Snow white who has black hair and skin as white as snow. And it is a female (Rae) with her seven sisters who save the prince and not dwarfs. I actually liked this take on the book except for Rae. I did not believe in her character or the king who is meant to be the evil one. For me Maleficent is a better evil character then the king. As for Rae, something happens to her in her past that makes her act the way she does in the future. However, she would act in one way with some people and an other with the prince (due to what happened to her in her past) which I found really hard to believe. Also the incident I found hard to believe after I got to know her. All I can say is she did not fight back enough. Unfortunately this really put me off the book. This is a personal view and others might not really care about what I mentioned and enjoy it.

Shadows on Snow

This book is a fresh take on familiar stories, and such it manages to be exciting while still retaining the comfortable feeling of a fairy tale. I loved the individuality of the characters of the seven sisters, as well as the swapped gender roles. While being mostly lighthearted, this book does not avoid darker topics, which prevented the story from becoming sickly sweet. Overall, a fun, engaging read which I thoroughly recommend. This book was given to me free of charge in exchange for a review.

A completely new perspective to loved tales

Just wow this book offers a completely new perspective on all the tales you grew up with. Whilst the concept feels fresh it also feels familiar in the way it is read and gives you the cosy feeling you had when you first heard these tales growing up. I find it amazing that this book is ideal for children but also for adults as it encompasses the knowledge from your childhood . in my opinion it has certainly hit a niche that it appeals to all age groups. Beautifully written and definitely one that will stay in my mind for time to come . I was given this book by the author / narrator in return for an honest unbiased review
