Publisher's Summary

The second epic installment of Brandon Mull’s #1 New York Times bestselling fantasy series! After the cliffhanger ending of A World Without Heroes, Jason is back in the world he’s always known - yet for all his efforts to get home, he finds himself itching to return to Lyrian. Jason knows that the shocking truth he learned from Maldor is precious information that all of his friends in Lyrian, including Rachel, need if they have any hope of surviving and defeating the evil emperor.

Meanwhile, Rachel and the others have discovered new enemies - as well as new abilities that could turn the tide of the entire quest. And as soon as Jason succeeds in crossing over to Lyrian, he’s in more danger than ever. Once the group reunites, they strive to convince their most-needed ally to join the war and form a rebellion strong enough to triumph over Maldor. At the center of it all, Jason and Rachel realize what roles they’re meant to play - and the answers are as surprising as they are gripping.

Part 2 - doesn't stand alone

This one book broken into three parts... so if you purchase the first you will need to purchase the next two to complete the story. I listened to the beginning a few times without getting hooked (a little too YA)... but when I finally got into it... found it an enjoyable world he had created, with interesting rules and peoples. It is written for YA and because of the extensive violence during wars and battles it would not be a good read for younger children. The last book is darker than the end of Harry Potter series. Many of the main characters die in some pretty icky ways in the overcoming of evil. Although the plot had a predictable ending, getting there had some interesting turns and twists along the way. I agree the narrator improves with each book, but wasn't bad with the first. If you are purchasing this one, you have already read the first and this is very similar, although a bit slower as Jason returns and they work to unite people into fighting the emperor.

Great book 2 to a great series!

In our families humble opinion, Beyonders is Brandon Mull's best series of them all! And this book a great bridge between the first book and the third. The only downside is there are only 3 books in the series!

I want this trilogy on myself!

Yeah It's Me Again Margaret and I still love this man's work. I would highly recommend any of his books to young readers or adults that are sick and tired of trashy fantasy novels. He's always clean, he has great ideas, Vivid world's, and is a really good author.

Great sequel

I am impressed with the way Brandon manages to continue introducing and building up interesting characters. The narration was initially hard to get used to, but it soon faded as the voices Jeremy put on melted together with the superb characters.

great but too short

the story and characters are great but it feels too short. I think it could have expanded a bit more. it feels like theres enough of a base to really take this book and the next to more of an epic of 34-40+ hours. so for the short length that doesn't do it justice I deduct 1 star. would be 5 star otherwise.

Great listen even for adults.

loved it. I was sad when it ended. Good thing there is still one more book in the series. I have come to love the characters and their relationships and the world in which they adventure.
