Publisher's Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Secret Service, by Tom Bradby.

To those who don’t really know her, Kate Henderson’s life must seem perfectly ordinary. But she is in fact a senior MI6 officer, who right now is nursing the political equivalent of a nuclear bomb.

Kate’s most recent mission has yielded the startling intelligence that the British Prime Minister has cancer - and that one of the leading candidates to replace him may be a Russian agent of influence.

Up against the clock to uncover the Russian mole, Kate risks everything to get to the truth. But with her reputation to uphold, her family hanging by a thread and a leadership election looming, she is quickly running out of options, and out of time.

Real life-ish

Robert Peston is reporting from outside Downing St, dirt is being dished on candidates for the top job, and Russia is the Big Bad, meddling in national elections.
Luckily there is no Brexit angle as too much reality would spoil a good yarn. There is quite a lot of political blah blah but that is far less interesting than all the spies and moles and murders.
Good narration and a nicely paced thriller, balanced by quite relatable domestic juggling.
It is an enjoyable listen with plenty of red herrings and suspicious folk but the denouement is a bit flat and does not really explain how and why certain incidents took place.

Modern Len Deighton

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Reminded me of Len Deighton’s Game, Set & Match trilogy with a present day plot. Great narrator. If you like spy thrillers this is a good choice.

Refreshingly close to the mark...

Great technical perspective and accuracy, current, thought-provoking and refreshingly different from other, run-of-the-mill SIS thrillers. I trust there will be others to follow in this series...

Superior political thriller

I purchased this after hearing the author talking about it on the radio and being intrigued by the plot that was described. I wasn't disappointed and listened to the whole thing over two days. Great story, and I thought the narrator was excellent.

Good story, narrator sounds drunk

Good enough espionage story. Quite obviously influenced current US and UK politics, in fact one might say directly copying them in the form of a novel.

The narration however... What happened here? Is there a technical fault? It appears to be playing soooo slowly. I actually had to speed up the playback to make it sound normal.

Gripping thriller - recommend you read it

It’s a fabulous spy story - MI6 and Russians. And the performance is OK apart from the excruciating Scottish accent for Stuart and the terrible accents of the “establishment” characters. But the story is so good I could put up with the accents.

Couldn’t finish it...

The story is so slow and all over the place. But most of all the narrator is terrible.
