A Great Listen

The cover graphic for this audiobook is really eye-catching, the the contents more than live up to it. The stories are beautifully written and the narration is extraordinary, capturing the nuances of every character. This is one of the best audiobooks I’ve ever enjoyed. A++

Scottish Stories in a delightful Scottish Voice

I found Daniel in the first place from his awesome podcast, and shortly thereafter decided to read his books. The stories are wonderful and his versions of them are truly exciting. I was hoping for an audiobook version so that I could listen to them as bedtime stories. While I was a little bummed that Daniel chose not to voice the audiobook version of these myths himself, I am very pleased with the voice that he chose. Angus King does an excellent job reading these myths and legends and I am very excited to have these bedtime stories in my pocket.

Fantastic listen!

A fantastic telling of old world legends. The narration brings the stories to life, as though one is sitting by the fire and receiving ancient wisdom.

Beautiful tales

Beautifully narrated, these mythical stories become magical. The listener can visualize living in early Scotland with beliefs in nature's power.

Great stories!

I have been enjoying listening to the tales presented within this book. The stories are excellently written and really pull you into them. I have both read and listened to this book, and I have found listening to it to be a very immersive experience. These stories are meant to be told after all! Angus King is a pleasure to listen to and delivers the stories perfectly! I can't wait to share these stories with my toddler, and the book has kindled the desire to tell stories within me.

Thank you for this excellent collection of stories, and keep up the great work!

Enchanting

I had this in written word before being gifted this spoken word version. The stories were already completely captivating and I have bought multiple copies as gifts but then what a gift for me to be told these stories again by skilful narrator Angus King! Through some kind of alchemy he has brought these stories to new heights. The intimacy he has with each of the characters shines brightly in his telling. Its has been such a joy to listen as I wind down before bed. This book will take you places! Very well done!

Very entertaining

The stories are told in that vivid way that makes you miss your turn while driving because you are so engrossed in the tale. Personally, I loved every backtracking mile.

Enjoyable

The King and the Cockerel made me laugh out loud. That was my favorite short story. Having recently listened to Greek legends, I was interested in these Scottish tales. The stories are much more focused on people and animals than Greek legends. An enjoyable way to spend several hours. Also, the narrator was superb.

Enthralling. Highly recommended.

I got this book with the intention of having something that would keep me planted beside my massive towering needing-to-be- folded-laundry pile and this, was my temptation and reward for getting down the pile. I checked the weather, picked a windy stormy day, I put the slow cooker on and settled in and sure enough, I was not only riveted, but afterwards the pile was sorted. It took a while I kept stopping to listen, enraptured. Although the number of times I had to remind myself get back to it because I was so caught up in the story I'd stopped and was tensely waiting to see EEEKKKK what's going to happen!? Didn't the cook tell the butler, it's a giant, they don't exactly whisper.
There's none of the same old same old stories that I've read or heard repeated everywhere without interest or any sense of life. These are new stories I hadn't heard before. He has a great voice that I enjoyed listening to, he was familiar with the stories and his intonation that makes it seem like he's in the room with you rather than reading the stories out in a booth.
His sense of timing that that really draws you in and adds the little details that really helps immerse and help you visualise what is happening. He's a master of timing, the pauses, just for long enough to not get impatient. A few times the children came and sat with me and listened to a story before heading back out to play. A few times we even had to pause it because they got so excited. We have some story time set up with this for later this week during the thunder storm that we may be getting. Will absolutely get the next one audiobook and the books.

I will add my children are unimpressed with me going "young beauty, I have come far to find out who has made this mess that is all still over the floor, if you will help me tidy it up now you won't be sent to tidy your bedroom on your own".

Edit to add, Oooh the outrage at the stoor worm, the children were most impressed at the king only bothering to do something when it was his own daughter about to be munched.

Relaxing bedtime sleep aid

All I can say is that Angus King has a great voice because I fall asleep almost immediately when I start playing the book- it makes me feel like a kid tucked up warm in bed with a parent reading. I have a stressful job and often tend to worry. So I go to bed earlier at nine now and then when my husband follows up later, he turns it off because I’m deep asleep. So far, I can’t tell you how good the stories are but I hope to find out!

a brilliant book

I loved this audible, a great collection of Scottish myths and legends with several stories I hadn't heard before. Has a great Scottish narrator, who draws you in and feels like you could be listening to an old bard or skald telling the stories of his home. a brilliant book, would read again.

Not bad, worth a listen with an open mind.

If you have prior historical knowledge on Scotland, Ireland and Scandinavia as I have, listen with an open mind and try to ignore the timelines as I failed to do in some chapters.

Overall the book was good. As a Scot myself it was nice to hear some of the old myths again but they seemed to end more abruptly and lacking context in some parts. And the settings seemed a bit out when it came to timelines and cultural settings, Scandinavian ties etc. as they lived in longhouses not castles and Norway had many Jarls and Kings until they unified under Harald Finehair.

While the narrator did well, he could have been a bit more inventive with his portrayal of some characters. Going for an English accent in a Scottish myth is a bit of a no-no even if the character is supposed to be more upper class.

Nevertheless, Good effort, would like to hear more tales. Good Job.
