    "Un-Surprisingly, Beautiful"

Zahn and Thompson come together once more to weave an exceptional story! Zahn has woven another patch into the quilt that is Star Wars. His writing is superb, and thankfully we have someone just as brilliant to narrate! I can not applaud this enough! I also plan on purchasing the physical copy, because apparently there is a pull out poster featuring the Grand Admiral himself! But do yourself a favor and jump into this audiobook!

A few notable aspects that I can remember (re listening after this!) NO SPOILERS!

The story of Thrawn's ascendancy to Grand Admiral.

The unique Chiss twist of the importance in utilizing and preserving resources, which bordered on compassion for others.

The tie in to Star Wars Rebels! Providing a really rich background into why certain events occurred in the show.

A beautiful balance of political intrigue (which I ABSOLUTELY love in the Star Wars universe!), and intense action scenes!

One detail I really appreciated was the depiction and hesitance of Coruscant's underbelly. We typically see this through the eyes of force wielders or soldiers, neither of which really experience the emotions that an everyday person would when confronted with the slums.

Love it. But I miss the old voice for Thrawn. The new one lines up with Rebels, but is less powerful.

    "An Superb Story!!!"
What did you love best about Thrawn (Star Wars)?

This story provides a great insight on Thrawn, the person himself. It shapes a different picture of Thrawn as oppose to the animation series of Clone Wars. Thrawn doesn't seem to be a bad guy, but more misunderstood. While Thrawn's seems to be bad, he isn't. Also, his overall agenda may be selfish, but it isn't for the Empire.

What other book might you compare Thrawn (Star Wars) to and why?

It's hard to say what to compare this story to, as the overall story itself is quite unique. If I had to say, Thrawn appears to be a person who in today's modern world is well versed in The Art of War by Sun Tzu. So in some ways I could compare the character of Thrawn to Sun Tzu himself; as Thrawn is well calculated, a tactician, and a person who has a keen insight of strategical warfare.

What about Marc Thompson’s performance did you like?

As always, Marc Thompson is an excellent performer who always brings life to the Star Wars stories...

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No not really. However, as Marc Thompson performs a great narration, you can't help to become engulfed into the story.

    Any additional comments?

I gave the story a 4 of 5 stars only because there were a few moments the story had short period of dullness. There were just some portions that were unnecessary. Other than that, this was an awesome story. I'd listen to it again, again, and again....

Zahn's original trilogy was simply amazing, but this tale seems to be nothing but background context, which, while useful, isn't very entertaining.

This is what I was looking for in a Timothy Zahn Book. I've missed his thrawn. I also want to be first to say the voice actor is perfect, even if Eli is clearly George W. Bush.

    "Somewhat disappointing"

While not bad, per se, unfortunately this fell far short of my expectations. The Thrawn character here doesn't compare to his excellent arc in the 'Heir to the Empire' trilogy.

    "Sherlock?"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes and no. On the one hand, reading any book is time well spent; on the other, this book wasn't as good as it could have been.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I'm not sure, I was thinking about reading the earlier Thrawn books again.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Marc Thompson?

Oh yes. He is an amazing narrator who really brought life to every character in the story.

Did Thrawn (Star Wars) inspire you to do anything?

Read the other Thrawn books again, and find more books narrated by Marc Thompson.

    Any additional comments?

If I had wanted to read a Sherlock novel I would have. I felt that the use of the Eli as Watson to Thrawn's Holmes was poorly done and really detracted from the story itself. I didn't need Eli to explain things to me, and quite frankly I hate method of plotting a book...its a cheap way to attempt to get inside a main character's head. For a character as nuanced and mysterious as Thrawn it was unnecessary. I had very high hopes for this book, the first few chapters were really good...before Eli became the slow witted sidekick.

    "Didn't feel like Star Wars"
What would have made Thrawn (Star Wars) better?

This book picked up at the end, but for 3/4 it was just boring, I'm sad to say. The characters and the setting were Star Wars, but the story itself just didn't seem to have too much connection the universe. Unless you watch the Rebels animated series, you would miss several tie-ins that make it interesting. The author pointing out for the entire book Thrawn's assessments of his interactions was tedious. Just a disappointing outing from usually reliable Tim Zahn.
