Audible Editor Reviews

Editors Select, June 2014 - All I knew going into M.R. Carey's The Girl with All the Gifts was that it is a zombie novel centered around a special, enigmatic little girl named Melanie. Now that I've finished, I have a dilemma — I want to convince everyone I know to listen to it, but I don't want to give a single thing away. What I will say is this: The Girl with All the Gifts is one of the most imaginative, original, and deeply human takes on the zombie genre I have ever encountered in any form. It's definitely a thriller in the true sense of the word: every time I thought I knew where the story was going, Carey completely changed the game, and there were plenty of those harrowing, suspenseful scenes that make the genre so irresistible. But what made this story truly unique were the characters — multidimensional, believable, and sympathetic personalities that stayed with me long after the story was over. If you like zombie fiction, or just great, smart thrillers, make this your next listen. And don't dare let anyone spoil the ending for you. —Sam, Audible Editor

Publisher's Summary

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her "our little genius".

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh.

Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up. Melanie doesn't know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad.

The Girl with All the Gifts is a sensational thriller, perfect for fans of Stephen King, Justin Cronin, and Neil Gaiman.

What the Critics Say

"A great read that takes hold of you and doesn't let go.""If you only read one novel this year, make sure it's this one, it's amazing.""The story of Melanie and the people around her is so thoughtfully crafted, so heartfelt, remorseless and painfully human, that it takes the potentially tired trope of the zombie apocalypse and makes it as fresh as it is terrifying. The story spirals towards a conclusion so surprising, so warm and yet so chilling, that it takes a moment to realize it's been earned since the first page, and even before. It left me sighing with envious joy, like I'd been simultaneously offered flowers and beaten at chess. A jewel."

    "I wasn’t sure at first"

This isn’t the genre that I usually like to read. After the first few chapters I was thinking it was not for me. I was going to stop listening and return the book. I found it just too mean and gross. I decide to listen a bit more and then I got hooked! The story started to change and it ended up being a very entertaining! It really held my attention. I ended up finishing the book and enjoyed the plot. Good book!

    "A must read!"

Truly, an amazing book. I never knew where the author was taking me. A must read from beginning to end. Do not read the end first, will spoil the whole book.

    "Good storytelling"

I really liked how the story was told. Switching perspectives between characters while moving the plot forward was well done here. The pacing is done well. I wasn't a fan of Mrs. Justino, but that's just personal opinion. The story is one where the right side isn't really clear. Or maybe it is for you. That's the beauty I find in this book. It was as realistic as one could be in a story like this. The performance was pretty good. Maybe not the best, but still good. There was clear distinction between characters. Their emotions were captured. Overall it's a good book.

    "Unexpected Delight!"

I am not drawn to and do not read these sorts of novels but this one was suggested by another writer who used it a superb example of how to reveal character and exposition without creating an info dump. I was absolutely captivated from beginning to end and found myself often surprised by the journey such a book could take me on. It was unpredictable through out. But then again I am not drawn to such genres. I was blown away how honest the characters are written. I found my heart racing through much of the action and emotionally engaged through out, asking questions and pondering the reality of such possibilities. It completely pulled me into the world of the story. To me this is really what makes a great read, something to be savored.

    "Apocalypse Story with a Twist"

Interesting story and has several twists that really shouldn’t be ruined. First half of it is more structured and holds together better. The second half is a bit more jumbled and could be better. However the ending is pretty creepy and satisfying all things considered.

"Never thought I'd read a Zombie book and like it!"

Surprisingly good book. I am more of a mystery/suspense reader but this book caught my eye and I gave it a chance. I'm glad I did. Very well written and engaging. I would definitely read this author again.

    "A Most Unique Zombie Tale"

A cut above most zombie/apocalyptic stories I have ever read or heard. Very imaginative and even includes some reasonable pseudo-science.
Another thing that set this apart was the detailed setting in England and specifically London.
So many times the switching among points of view has been so distracting and confusing, but this author accomplishes it with aplomb.
Enjoyed all the characters as they were not just devices to further the plot, but fully realized characters.
Many other reviewers have commented on the excellent ending and I feel the same way, but I am not sure about continuing the story, only because usually sequels don't hold up to the first.
Really a terrific book, one of the best of the genre.
