This is the story of Bess - or Dog-Bitch Bess as she came to be known. It's the story of the gun she carried, whose name was Wakeful Slim. It's the story of the dead man who carried that gun before her and left a piece of himself inside it. And it's the tale of how she turned from teacher, to renegade, and ultimately to hero.
This is also the tale of the last violent engagements in an inter-dimensional war - one of the most brutal the multiverse had ever seen.
This is how Bess learned the truth about her world. Came to it the hard way, through pain and loss and the reckless spilling of blood, and carried it with her like a brand on her soul. And once she knew it - knew for sure how badly she'd been used - she had no option but to do something about it.
Discover this thrilling standalone science fiction adventure from the million-copy bestselling M. R. Carey, author of The Girl With All the Gifts and the Philip K. Dick Award-shortlisted Infinity Gate (a New York Times Best Science Fiction and Fantasy Book of the Year).

Reseñas de la Crítica
"Outlaw Planet is a sweeping story of petty violence and heartbreaking loss, set against a backdrop of unimaginably vast interdimensional conflict. Tragic and hopeful, it is at its heart a story of love, vengeance, redemption and the freedom to choose to be something more."
—Claire North, author of The First Fifteen Lives of Henry August
"Filled with wildly inventive, lush worldbuilding, this is the story of a character you can't forget in a story that just keeps expanding beyond the weirdest horizon."
—David Wellington, author of the Arthur C. Clarke Award-nominated The Last Astronaut and Paradise-1

“In Once Was Willem, M. R. Carey’s gorgeous prose weaves a fable full of dread and wonder, a deeply intelligent and emotionally gripping story boasting one of the nastiest sorcerers you’ll ever meet, and a narrator as inwardly gentle as he is outwardly monstrous. A masterpiece of medieval dark fiction. I love this book. Highest recommendation.”
—Christopher Buehlman, author of The Blacktongue Thief on Once Was Willem

"It's so absurdly fun and readable, you nearly miss the incredible use of language and lore. Lovable grotesques and ghastly villains populate a compelling folk-tale. Absolutely wonderful."—Gareth Hanrahan, author of The Sword Unbound on Once Was Willem

The premise is TOTALLY absurd, and every once in a while, you really have to pause this super serious tale of bloody vengeance to just burst out laughing. I honestly don't know how the narrator manages to keep a straight face. She truly is a consummate professional.
That said, this book is a brilliant piece of speculative fiction. it's set in the author's Pandemonium universe, where the sapient species in different parallel worlds evolved from a whole panopoly of mostly mammals. So, yeah, furries: every kind of dog people, bear people, you name it! Also, talking guns. No, really, because AI. This part is probably not even unrealistic!
But the author puts these conceits to work in the name of parable, not parody. The result is a damning commentary on the human condition, the nature of violence, and man's stupidity to man. MR Carey is my favorite kind of genre writer: one who doesn't sacrifice character or theme to plot and pacing. Though the plot is tight, and the pacing of this novel is a character in its own right.
The narration is really something special. Almost the entire novel, save for a few passages set in a more contemporary milieu, is read in the traditional cadence of a Western tall tale. This might take some getting used to... I'll allow as it can be a mite soporific at first. But the saddle sores fade after a few chapters, and the rhythm gives the tale an epic quality (even if you hurry it along a little).
Within that framework, Cannon evokes a cavalcade of uniquely voiced characters, with an inspired array of twangs, drawls, timbes, registers, and accents. The choice of narrator can make all the difference in the quality of an audiobook, spinning dross into gold or grinding pearls into pig shit. In this case, Stephanie Cannon is the perfect choice.
I wept when it was over, not because the ending was sad, but because it was over.
Steampunk furry Western, but hear me out...

Fantastic, Complicated Characters

I have always found characters fully drawn. They are-well-real “characters”- particularly the women. They are smart, funny, unique, irascible people. As a woman, I appreciate that. The story develops quickly and the drama is intermingled with humor that is gentle but pointed. Stephanie Cannon took his written word and threw it into my ear instantly…perfect rate and character voice. She flew between characters’ talking without one glitch. Her capacity to jump between each is fast and FLAWLESS- voice, rate, intonation - all specific to each character. Now to wait for his next…rats.
Lucid creativity
