Publisher's Summary

Adrian Tchaikovksy's critically acclaimed stand-alone novel Children of Time is the epic story of humanity's battle for survival on a terraformed planet.

Who will inherit this new Earth?

The last remnants of the human race left a dying Earth, desperate to find a new home among the stars. Following in the footsteps of their ancestors, they discover the greatest treasure of the past age - a world terraformed and prepared for human life.

But all is not right in this new Eden. In the long years since the planet was abandoned, the work of its architects has borne disastrous fruit. The planet is not waiting for them pristine and unoccupied. New masters have turned it from a refuge into mankind's worst nightmare.

Now two civilizations are on a collision course, both testing the boundaries of what they will do to survive. As the fate of humanity hangs in the balance, who are the true heirs of this new Earth?

"A unique take on the alien"

This was a very nice surprise. I read a lot of science fiction, and it's rare to come across a take on an alien society that is unique, and as well fleshed out as the author has achieved here.

The story concept is great, and the execution does not disappoint.

The start of the book didn't leave me expecting much - I found the main character in that early part pretty... cliche. Very glad to say that quickly got better though, much better.

Great sci-fi. Reminded me of Vinge - A Fire Upon the Deep and A Deepness in the Sky. Highly recommended!

    "Brilliant, innovative science fiction"
Would you consider the audio edition of Children of Time to be better than the print version?

Yes. The narrator has a way of making the spiders real, of of bringing them to life.

Who was your favorite character and why?

the spider named Fabian. He sacrifices himself to save his fellow space explorer by triggering her "mate and eat [him]" instinct.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The description of the spider city during the plague.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. It's too long. Also, this book deserves thoughtful consideration as you listen.

    Any additional comments?

This is the most original science fiction I have read in many years. A whole new perspective on first contact. I'm no fan of spiders, but I found myself sympathizing with them. The author brings to life, and makes real a species that is so different from humans there is almost no basis for communication.

    "Wonderful"

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Very entertaining, creative and thought-provoking on the nature of our species.

Although it was written a few years ago it's particularly apt right now given the current political climate. It Is by no means inherently political but it's fantastical storylines lend themselves to interesting reflection about the nature of human behavior and the tension between our drives towards conflict and harmony.

The book was well-written, intelligent, and had some unique and intriguing elements.

    "Wonderfully imaginative and ambitious"

A fantastic listen. The world(s) the author creates seem huge, but manageable, dealt with over a massive period of time. It's the time scale that threatened to lose me, but the simple use of a decimal chapter system, to shift between characters in the tenths, and through epochs in the whole, was extremely helpful.

I appreciated the way in which the author created alien creatures that made sense to me, because he had explicitly grown them out from creatures of our own experience. Behaviour didn't seem tacked on or weird for weirdness' sake, but felt consistent and understandable considering their origins.

Where I felt let down was the story's reliance on a seemingly sentient nano-virus. I at first thought that I may have missed something. Maybe I missed an entry somewhere that indicated the virus was being managed somehow by the constructs aboard the Messenger, however later in the story that would have been impossible. Yet the virus continues it's work, selecting genes, memories and even skills to pass on.

That's a fairly minor quibble, however. I probably made too much of it here, as reading that last paragraph made it sound like more of an irritant that it actually was. The scale and imagination of this story were absolutely wonderful, and I will definitely look into other works by this author.

A Note for the Brotherhood: The authors early choices in social hierarchy and primary characters were at least partially remedied by the inclusion of the Fabian character. Code Orange downgraded to Yellow.

    "Science fiction at its best!"
What made the experience of listening to Children of Time the most enjoyable?

The narrator was fantastic. Her intonation matched what I expected at all times.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Children of Time?

When the mutineers saw the ants and spiders on Kerns world.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I found the spiders giving me the heebie-jeebies sometimes and would take a break.

    Any additional comments?

This book is very much worth a credit.

There are many parts of this book that I love. The introduction is great: It leads you in one reasonable direction and then takes you by surprise. There are a lot of interesting concepts explored. The writing is good. The narrator is great. The science that is used and the controversies that arise from such technologies all seem plausible.

I've been trough the library for a good sci-fi without loads of 1 dimensional marines blowing up alien 1 dimensional ditto and this is it. .

A believably host of characters in truly well thought and build up story...

    suspense without blazing guns...

    A good read..

    "Tchaikovsky is still writing Symphonies!"

This is genuine high-quality science fiction, in terms of pacing it's probably closer to Heinlein than Scalzi or Star Wars but it's innovative, well thought-out and fairly challenging. It's definitely at the thinking reader's end of sci-fi.

It has to be a clever book that gets you rooting for spiders and sympathising with them. This book covers issues of morality, decency, survival and has probably one of the most unique treatments of the age-old battle of the sexes I have ever read.

The treatment of time and lifespan is equally clever. There are almost three distinct timelines here. The relatively short-lived spiders together with the humans being able to engage in various uses of suspended animation could have resulted in a real mess with dozens and dozens of varied characters. I thought this was particularly well-covered with the implementation of a logical mechanism to provide consistency of character among the arachnids and longevity with key humans.

Mel Hudson does a fine job of the narration, no easy task this one making this in all a very high quality entry to the genre and I would echo Carl's thought's that we need more of this author on Audible. It seems Tchaikovsky is still writing Symphonies!

I can honestly say that I have seldom enjoyed a modern sci-fi yarn so much.

Excellent plot, well-written, fabulously narrated, times like this I wish there was a sixth star to award.
