A memoir of trauma and transformation by a man who was haunted by childhood abuse but who fought his way back—a journey from vengeance and prison to freedom and redemption.

For a boy growing up in the 1970s, rural northern New Jersey was a year-round playground, filled with secret fishing holes, enchanted woods, and private trails to explore with friends. But this childhood idyll was snatched from Clark Fredericks by a man he regarded as a local hero: Dennis Pegg, the town’s Boy Scout leader, a law enforcement officer with the Sussex County Sheriff’s Department, and, as Fredericks would discover, a serial predator.

Through his teenage years and young adulthood, Fredericks kept silent about the horrific abuse he experienced, turning to drugs, alcohol, gambling, and sex addiction to numb the memory. For decades, he remained tormented by shame, unable to share the secrets that were eating away at his psyche—until he violently confronted his abuser.

At once heartbreaking and uplifting, Scarred is the story of a man who overcame the destructive aftereffects of violence and abuse that nearly destroyed him. Now an advocate for victims and a prominent voice in support of child abuse law reform, Fredericks powerfully illustrates the healing power of love and trust.

Wow, this captures the psychological ups and downs of an abuse victim. What stays with them, how it impacts their lives in such destructive ways especially if you don’t tell anyone. You also see the work of the evil one in this book and how keeping things quiet can be destructive and menacing. The devil is a liar but like Frederick’s said in the book, what the evil one meant to harm you, God does good with it. His life has changed in such a wonderful yet life changing not just for himself and his life but the impact his story has on other abuse victims. So glad you told it to the world and got all the truth out. Great book, very impactful.

Incredibly well written and heart-wrenching. I chose the audible version. The author, Clark did a phenomenal job narrating his own book. He endured so much throughout his life, it is inspiring to see how far he has come and what a bright future he has ahead of him.

Trauma and inspiration all in one

Powerful story

Scarred by Clark Fredericks is one of the most powerful books I’ve ever listened to.

Clark shares his story as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, a topic too often ignored or swept under the rug. It’s heavy, yes, but he tells it with honesty, vulnerability, and surprising humanity. He doesn’t just share the darkness. He shares the grit, resilience, and discipline it took to climb out of it.

This is more than a true-crime story. It’s a comeback story. And I’m a big believer in comebacks.

As a fellow survivor, what struck me most was Clark’s courage to own his story. Too often survivor stories stay hidden in shame. Clark refuses to let shame have the last word. That kind of ownership is not only powerful, it’s healing for him, and for others who hear it.

Scarred is raw, real, and unforgettable. For survivors, it’s proof that we are not alone. For everyone else, it’s a window into the kind of strength it takes to survive and then to rise.

A Survivor's Inspiring Comeback Story

This story is the real life account of a boy's harrowing journey through his family of origin and being groomed then abused by a "trusted" family friend. It also covers and his path through adulthood in his attempt to distract and avoid the trauma, seeking revenge and ultimately healing from the trauma toward a brighter future. I love the narration by the author himself, which I always prefer, while there are some imperfections in the narration it's not enough to distract from the story and I prefer the trade off that's made when the author reads it himself. The story seems genuine and candid, well constructed story.
