Publisher's summary

In this landmark work on a subject too often dismissed as paranormal or disreputable, Jeffrey Meldrum gives us the first book on Sasquatch to be written by a scientist with impeccable academic credentials. He gives an objective look at the facts in a field mined with hoaxes and sensationalism.

Meldrum reports on the work of a team of experts from a wide variety of fields who were assembled to examine the evidence for a large, yet undiscovered, North American primate. He reviews the long history of this mystery - which long predates the "Bigfoot" flap of the late 50s - and explains all the scientific pros and cons in a clear and accessible style.

Anyone who has pondered the mysteries of human evolution will be fascinated and eager to join Dr. Meldrum in drawing their own conclusion.

If you have an open mind READ THIS!

If you're between believer and skeptic this will firmly cement your position on whether or not a bipedal relative is a true possibility. Dr Meldrum is everywhere in the media when it relates to the Big Guy. One thing is consistent; his words and proof of evidence. He never embellishes the facts, stories, or his own encounters with evidence. Even more expressing is no one can ever get him to move off center. He does not argue, or talk down to those who debate, dismiss, or make light of his position. Those who recognize truth and have an open mind will understand what he is sharing. To dismiss his work shows ignorance in true scientific research.

There's no such thing as bigfoot. But listening to this book really helps me fall asleep at night.

Brief summary

Thorough and scientifically objective. One would think the subject deserves this outlook in every publication.

Brings Scientific Credibility to the Subject

Prof. Meldrum balances accessibility with serious technical analysis that should coax the skeptic and buttress the convinced. Be prepared to consider details of foot morphology and hip to torso to shoulder measurements as well as interesting treatments of indigenous folklore and cobsiderations of sightings, footprint, and photographic evidence (including a long analysis of the Patterson film). Very informative.

Maybe too scientific for the lay reader

If you are hoping for a collection of spooky campfire stories, this is certainly not your book. There are a few spooky stories, but they are few and relatively far between. The book is focused on the science. So much so that many readers are going to be put off by the scientific jargon and footprint details that only a podiatrist could love (or understand). I finally gave up midway through the book. But at least I came away with a stronger feeling that there may be something big and hairy behind all those spooky campfire stories.

A scientific perspective

I enjoyed it even though most of it was over my head as a lot of time is spent talking about anatomy. I like that the subject is being taken seriously by at least SOME qualified people. I believe it deserves that.

Very technical and detailed

May be too technical for most readers. The author is presenting evidence to the scientific community. I found it better to listen to the chapters in which I had the most interest. I don’t need to be convinced of Bigfoot’s existence. I have already enough proof..

Review Sasquatch

An excellent book that provides information from a scientific perspective that Sasquatch possibly exists in North America.

a very scientific analysis that convinced me

the text may be 15 years old, and an update is required, but the scientific analysis is excellent

Detailed & Scientific, If a Little Dry

Wanting to branch out a little in my reading repertoire, I happened upon this book dealing with a subject, some even say a paranormal one, of the evidence behind the existence of a hitherto unknown great ape, otherwise colloquially known as "Big Foot" or Sasquatch.

This book deals with the subject matter in a disciplined, scientific and structured way. The formality of the prose is perfectly complemented by the narrator, a man who could quite easily narrate a history channel documentary.

I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from this book. I think I was looking for a little more colour, as it were. This book is rather dry and analytical, no bad thing for sure, but I think for the mass market the detached analysis might have been a little more interesting if interspersed with the best of the anecdotal evidence by means of encounters and sightings. Having said that, this book does indeed include such accounts, but they are sporadic and sparse, and a considerable portion of the book is focused on perhaps the most famous video evidence, the Patterson-Gimlin film. I do accept that this one Big Foote film has received the most rigorous analysis over the years and therefore completely understandable as to why so much time is spent on it. However, I'd like to have had far more video footage included. Even withstanding the original published year of this book, I'd imagine there must be equally good footage available, perhaps better with the advent of superior video equipment in the hands of ordinary people, to be considered.

I did have to skip certain sections of the book and did feel that some of the points were dealt with more than once, such as the analysis of footprints.

If you're strictly looking for a scientific based handling of the subject matter, then this is a book worthy of your time. It's quite rigorous and reads like a forensic report much of the time, so be prepared for a somewhat technical read. Given the aim of this book, my observation isn't a criticism, just something to point out for those casual readers looking to learn more about the subject, but in a slightly more accessible and less formalized format.

A thorough analysis

Whilst this is definitely due an update, the wealth and depth of evidence Professor Meldrum clearly and concisely presents here shows why he doesn't call himself a believer. There's no need for belief when you understand the wealth of evidence that exists to show that there are definitely living beings out there which are neither human nor apes, and have been known to Indigenous people for millenia.
