Publisher's Summary

Listen to the critically acclaimed number-one New York Times best seller with more than one million copies sold. Same Kind of Different as Me was a major motion picture release by Paramount in fall 2017.

A dangerous, homeless drifter who grew up picking cotton in virtual slavery.

An upscale art dealer accustomed to the world of Armani and Chanel.

A gutsy woman with a stubborn dream.

A story so incredible no novelist would dare dream it.

It begins outside a burning plantation hut in Louisiana...and an East Texas honky-tonk...and, without a doubt, inside the heart of God. It unfolds at a Hollywood hacienda...an upscale New York gallery...a downtown dumpster...a Texas ranch.

Gritty with betrayal, pain, and brutality, it also shines with an unexpected, life-changing love.

Bonus material in this special movie edition includes:

  • A new epilogue with updates on the authors since the release of the original book
  • The amazing story behind the movie, how it got made, and the incredible experiences while filming in Jackson, MS.

Stays with me...

I got "Same Kind of Different As Me" because the movie commercial caught my eye. I liked the sound of the story and knew I'd never get around to going to the movies. I checked for an audible version, and read the reviews. My Notes to Self as to reasons for my purchases tell me that I got it on October 17, 2017 and added, "Current movie. Review by LYNISHA | September 20, 2017 clinched it." Lynisha, I don't know who you are, but thank you.

What hits me most about this book is not that protagonist Hall befriended Denver. It's not that OOOHHH, a HOMELESS person can be trusted, OOOH.It's not even that a rich big-shot could have a personality and keep a promise about friendship.

None of that surprised me. People are people. A criminal public defender once told me that he could find at SOMETHING good in just about everyone to whom he'd been assigned. When we remind ourselves, we generally know that there's more good than bad in the world, but that the bad hits the news because it's sensational and it sells.

No, gentle reader. What hit me most was what the book does to me. In general, I know, even as I walk through areas that drug victims frequent and therefore I don't carry cash, that I'm surrounded by many good people in horrible circumstances. I know that there are plenty of good people out on the street who were simply one paycheck, one layoff from eviction. I still look at these people differently. Oh, I volunteer, and I'll buy a cup of coffee for someone who asks. (I miss the dollar coupon books that the fast food restaurants sold, which I would have been able to give people since I DON'T carry cash.)

"Same Kind of Different As Me" doesn't have to be about how the beginning narrator looks at the potential protagonist, and how that secondary character becomes a narrator in his own right. It should be, during the reading and after, a reminder to us that that lady on the bus who's wearing all her clothes may have to do so since she has no place to keep them. It should be a reminder that the man standing in that doorway by the office high-rise, reeking of alcohol and trying to bum a single cigarette that would otherwise cost him a buck at the gas station, once had a life and a family before his career had been sold overseas. We need to remember that the person wearing a new coat may have gotten it with bonus money, with hard-earned savings, or via donation. For Ron Hall and Denver Moore to have shared a successful story, the message should indeed be that the people next to us - rich or poor, wearing Chanel or Tripp or rags, entering the office or shivering in the doorway, are indeed the same kind of people as we are.

It should be a haunting reminder until it becomes as familiar to us as the next doors we open.

RADICAL KIND OF DIFFERENCE

A captivating alluring truth. Every night I could hardly wait to meet Denver and his awesome words of wisdom and life. Thank God for a woman like Debbie and a man like Ron making a difference in this world every day. The three of them having and being what the other one needed. Me being a street evangelist I find the same kind of different as me. I love this book it hooked me on every level and now I pass the torch to family and friends. Thank you for the Insight of God in this book and his love for every man, woman, boy and girl In spite of Ourselves goodness and mercy followed through by grace.

Amazing

This true story refreshed my soul. I sent free copies to as many people as I could. While I am going through changing seasons in my life and our church is also changing, it reinforced my discernment that God has a plan and like Dallas said "if the devil ain't messing with you, he's already got you". Mr. Ron, thank you for sharing Ms Debbie and Dallas' story.

Laughter and Tears ... FANTABULOUS!!!!!

For many years now, I believed that different people are like different books on a bookshelf. The covers are all different colors. The writings are different but they all have the same stuff, in the middle.

By the same token, people are all different on the outside but made of the same stuff, on the inside. You NEVER know who will speak the greatest words of wisdom (child, middle aged, senior, brown, black, white). Keep your ears open!! Keep your HEARTS OPEN!!!!! Be A GOOD human.

This book, shows how ALL PEOPLE should live and love!!!

God's not dead...

If you would like to see God at work in people's lives then this is a great book. Our media, society, and government are systematically removing religion from our lives and look at the result, mass shootings, cheating, divorce, and so on.
God's alive and well and watching us to see if we'll do our mission here on Earth, death comes to every one of us, yes you too will die. Will you be proud of your life when in God's presence. This book reminds us of this, loved it. We need more books like this.

Power story full of God's truth

Love this book, so well read, love the voices, and the story is so powerful. It makes me realise that I want to live my life fully for Jesus every day, yet at the same time realise this life is not our destination, but a journey.

Fabulous listen

I so enjoyed the story and the reader’s voices. I did not want it to end. Denver is such a fascinating character. I smiled, laughed, was shocked and delighted and so much more all the way through.
