I absolutely love Rook! He is so caring and will do anything to protect Daly. At times she can be very annoying this was a cute story with some twist in it.

Excellent Story & Narration🎧 Gripping & Twisted!

Consider me wowed, it is great to see another side of L. Ann’s brilliant mind with this amazing romantic suspense. It seems like she masters every genre she writes, from her paranormal shifters to her contemporary romance with her angsty rock stars and now there is “Rook” the hitman for hire, except Magdalena “Dally” McCarthy hired him for the wrong thing. She needed a pretend boyfriend to attend her own birthday celebration with her family. Magdalena spent her whole life trying to appease her mother, but she could do nothing right in her eyes and she had gotten used to her wrath and just goes with the flow. But she does not want her mother to set her up on any dates or arrange a marriage for her, so her roommate suggested hiring a fake boyfriend. She helped with the arrangements and met him at the local diner and when she gets there, she approaches him with the instructions and payment. Rook is not the person she thinks he is but goes with it. He is recently retired, and he finds her entertaining. He takes his role as a fake boyfriend seriously and once he gets to her parents’ home, it surprised him at how they treat her, her family members are terrible people. And to make matters worse, the evening ends in a kidnapping. At first he thought they were after him but that was not the case, this girl is in big trouble and how could he not help her. Rook is a trained killer, but he has other skills too and those help in the situation they find themselves in, but he needs to get Dally to put her trust in him. This cleverly plotted story has plenty of drama, angst, mystery, twists and turns, thrilling suspense, heartfelt emotions, and some steamy romance. I loved the chemistry between Rook and Dally, two people from different worlds who just work. L. Ann, thank you for another amazing story and the wild and thrilling emotional roller aster ride. I am looking forward to hearing the next chess piece of a Chambers’ brother’s story.

🎧 📚🎧 And for the amazing narration, Thomas Locklear is a master behind the mike, joining him is Elise Hoffman, who was just as fabulous as her partner in crime, I mean narration. They had a complete understanding of the characters they were portraying, gave each a voice that fit that character’s persona, sounding believable in every role they played. Hoffman nails it as Magdalena, grasps every side of her personality, grows with her as she transforms from a meek and obedient daughter to the strong and confident women she became in the end. Locklear plays Rook’s role with perfection, a swoon-worthy alpha with an underlying fierceness and dangerous side which comes out when necessary. They set the perfect tone for the story, capture all the characters’ emotions and project them into their performance, having you feel every single one. These versatile voice artists are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to, their narration enhances an already amazing story to another level. Thank you for another exceptional listen.

How to describe this book in a few words? Intense, unexpected, different.

Lee Ann has brought her readers a completely different type of book and I wasn't prepared for just how different.

Rook is a retired hitman for hire who is mistaken for a guy Magdalena has hired to play her boyfriend after answering an ad.
All I can say is after that a series of events happen and there's a lot of action throughout!

What you need to know:
●Rook is one of 3 Brothers (all uniquely skilled in their profession but related overall)
● Magdalena is the youngest sibling of 3, with an older brother and sister.
● you think you know how this will all pan out and how the book will end , but you'll be wrong !
● One of Lee Ann's previous characters makes an appearance!

Now I'll be waiting on the next book and brother!!

Great story!

I think the narrators really brought this story to life. Action, adventure, mystery, sexy times. This story has it all! Loved the adventure of Room softening his heart. If I had any complaints it would be a weak heroine. I prefer mine to be a bit more ballsy and a lot less whiny, but I think it just made Rook even more charming in my eyes.

Well, I’m certainly going to sit up and take notice of this new-to-me author from now on, because this very exciting and unique story drew me in right from the mistaken identity start. And, as the drama, angst, friction, suspense, death toll, suspicions, revelations and tender feelings between Rook and Dally grew, I high-fived this author as I fell in love with her very entertaining book. The hardened retired handsome tattooed hitman and the sheltered woman who hired HIM on fake date.. a date that would pack a weighty punch and change both their lives. There’s an age-gap.. but that’s not important, they’re from two very different worlds.. but somehow they make it work and there’s many many challenges ahead.. but together they conquer every dangerous and not so dangerous one. The duet-style dual narration was great making the scenes flow more naturally and both narrators were the perfect fit for their characters and the story.

Worth a credit? Yes I reeeeealy enjoyed this very entertaining climactic listen. From Dally’s dysfunctional dislikable family, through the quick-build tension, thrills and suspense of the despicably wonderful storyline and on. Meeting Rook’s mysterious and equally interesting brothers Knight and Bishop (who will hopefully each be getting their books released soon) as I’m sure there’s lot to uncover there. And, being swept away by a tender, sweet, passionate, sexy, challenging and chaotic romance that was created under gunfire, honed with danger and love and forged into a five star listen.

Really enjoyed this story! I keep looking for bishops story, I hope it comes out soon.

Story with twists as well as steam

This story has the best qualities of a page turner, dialogue that brings a laugh now and then, and excellent narration.
Thomas gets to share that sexy growl as well as his very appealing voice for Rook and a variety of other characters.
I just listened for the second time and thoroughly enjoyed it - L Ann is a new author for me. I am looking forward to more from her.

Wow

This was a exciting and hot adventure. It was suspenseful and keeps you entertained. The author did a great job with the storyline and the characters are interesting and exciting together. I enjoyed this story so much. The narration was amazing all the characters came to life. Great listen from the start to the end.

Romance suspense twists

A very good Romance suspense story. A misunderstanding upon meeting between Rook and Deli leads to some great drama and romance

Great story, okay narration

I really enjoyed this story and the dual narration. The female narrator was great and I liked the male narrator's voice, but there was something off with his cadence, which was really distracting for me. There were weird pauses, almost like he was inserting a comma whiere there wasn't one, or like he finished the sentences prematurely and then had to add onto it. It was mostly the male MC's inner thoughts, while the spoken conversations seemed okay.
