Publisher's Summary

When girl meets duke, their marriage breaks all the rules....

Since his return from war, the Duke of Ashbury's to-do list has been short and anything but sweet: brooding, glowering, menacing London ne'er-do-wells by night. Now there's a new item on the list. He needs an heir - which means he needs a wife. When Emma Gladstone, a vicar's daughter turned seamstress, appears in his library wearing a wedding gown, he decides on the spot that she'll do.

His terms are simple:

  • They will be husband and wife by night only.
  • No lights, no kissing.
  • No questions about his battle scars.
  • Last, and most importantly...once she's pregnant with his heir, they need never share a bed again.

But Emma is no pushover. She has a few rules of her own:

  • They will have dinner together every evening.
  • With conversation.
  • And unlimited teasing.
  • Last, and most importantly...once she's seen the man beneath the scars, he can't stop her from falling in love.

"Funny - would make a really good movie."

I'm on my third time listening to this story. I've found it funny and lighthearted. And with Mary Jane Wells narration I have pictured the story as a movie. She has added just the perfect intonation to the Duke's voice and I can visualize the seamtress's eyes rolling.
    Very entertaining!

    "Awesome read and Awesome narration.."

I loved this book! Even though there was no suspense or mystery or anything other than a love story, it was 389 pages of crazy and wonderful and funny stuff. Of course, it was another book about a marriage of convenience but this a little different inasmuch as the duke needed an heir and he offered Emma THAT kind of marriage with the stipulation she would only have to “be” with him at night, in the dark, until she got pregnant and then she could move to the country. That was because he was so scared on his face and body from the Napoleonic War and he was afraid if she saw his whole body and face together she would run screaming, like his other betrothed did. So, Emma went from being a seamstress to being a duchess.

It was so sweet how they fell in love with, naturally, both of them fighting it. Him because he knew no one could love someone that looked like him and her because she had already tried love and it didn’t work out so well.

And when he became the Monster of Mayfair it was pretty funny. That’s when we met 12 year old Trevor, and that kid was hysterical. Where Trevor was funny Khan, the butler, was droll and unfunny. I liked the servants at the duke’s Mayfair home. They were always plotting some way to get Emma and Ash to fall in love, hoping Ash would stop being so grumpy if that happened.

There were three, if I remember correctly, explicit sex scenes in this book and the F-bomb was used 5 times.

As to the narration: If it hadn’t been for Mary Jane Wells’ narration I don’t think I would have enjoyed this book nearly as much as I did. Her voices were fantastic but she read with the best emotions I’ve ever heard. The laugh out loud moments were made funnier by the narration. This was a 10 star narration. My new favorite female narrator.

    "Enjoyable read"

Good story about respect and caring for your fellow man. The main character had unsightly wounds from serving his country. We needs to look past a person's façade before casting judgement.

    Spoiler quoting the Duke....
“And why you miserable piss soak serpent”

I know that quote doesn't sound funny but when you get to that part of the story...it's sooo hilarious...LMAO !!!!!

    "Light & kinda silly"

Seemed it was a bit of a spoof! Not a keeper for me I wouldn't read it again. I can't tell if the narrators voice for the male role was part of my problem or if it was the character in general. I liked the fact he was imperfect and she saw past his injuries and loved him anyhow. ..a. beauty & the beast scenario; however, it came off as more if a comedy.

"Beautiful marriage of the wounded and lonely."

    T. Dare writes a funny, touching, sensual story bringing two scarred souls together in a marriage of “convenience” (which of course never are). The dialogue is witty, the characters are brilliantly written and performed, the story is entertaining but with a deeper side. She added good sex (which should be in a marriage) and lots of humor! Excellent recipe for an enjoyable listen!

"No substance, no real plot. Read more like porn!"

I'm tired of authors who seemed to either be to lazy or just not capable of writing a book with well developed characters and a well developed plot. Instead it seems that many just rely on multiple sex encounters and graphic descriptions as a story line. l am no prude nor am I adverse to a deep meaningful romance, but porn should not be masked as period romance novels. If authors want to sell porn then label them and place them where they belong. Audible needs to develop a defined rating system so that people don't waste time and money wading through junk to find a good well written book.

the characters were endearing and much more natural and comical than your usual romance characters. I thought the narrator was great, if not a bit silly at times.
