Publisher's Summary

A searing Lords of the Underworld tale by New York Times best-selling author Gena Showalter, featuring a beastly prince and the wife he will wage war to keep.

He is ice....

Puck the Undefeated, host of the demon of Indifference, cannot experience emotion without punishment, so he allows himself to feel nothing. Until her. According to ancient prophecy, she is the key to avenging his past, saving his realm, and ruling as king. All he must do? Steal her from the man she loves - and marry her.

She is fire....

Gillian Shaw has suffered many tragedies in her too-short life, but nothing could have prepared the fragile human for her transition into immortality. To survive, she must wed a horned monster who both intrigues and frightens her...and become the warrior queen she was born to be.

Together they burn.

As a rising sense of possession and obsession overtake Puck, so does insatiable lust. The more he learns about his clever, resourceful wife, the more he craves her. And the more time Gillian spends with her protective husband, the more she aches for him. But the prophecy also predicts an unhappily-ever-after. Can Puck defeat fate itself to keep the woman who brought his deadened heart back to life? Or will they succumb to destiny, losing each other...and everything they’ve been fighting for?

What the hell happened?

Max could not sound more bored or apathetic with reading this one. The usual enthusiasm and pitch changes (especially to differentiate internal monologue and to a lesser extent for female characters) are gone and it's like he's rushing to just get it done and over with. And he 100% dropped the Irish accent for Puck which was a huge part of the appeal! I don't get it. It's not like his accent was bad to begin with so he decided to just Americanize it to make it easier. He couldn't have just forgotten since the author alludes to Puck's "Irish lilt" and he calls Gilly "lass" quite frequently. How did Gena not listen to the post version and insist he re-record it? The story itself is fine but the audio frankly really tanked this for me. I've read and/or listened to the entire series so I still plan to stick with it but friendly warning to prepare to be disappointed in the voices for this installment.

I had my doubts!

Ok so I also was a little disappointed that there would be no Liam and Gilly, BUT I have to admit Gena did not disappoint. I LOVED Puck, I loved Gilly, I loved Liam, I just loved this book. Gilly's crush on Liam was a little girls crush seen through little girls eyes. She had to come in to her own in a spectacular way and it took Puck not treating her like a child to accomplish that. There is a reason for the madness and as the story unfolds it all starts to make sense. For those of you who will rate this low without even reading it or feel "betrayed" by the author, I hope you decide to give it a chance. I don't think you'll be dissappointed.

What's happening with the rest of the warriors?!?!

The story is interesting however why did Gena take this turn in regards to Gilly and William, it doesn't make sense. What's going on with the rest of the warriors, it seems like the last 3 books have only been about the love connection and not about the artifacts/war .... what's going on Gena. Did will they find the box; has that story died. I don't get it. I listening to The Darkest Pleasure now and I realized wow this book and all the books up to Torin's where exciting and not only about the love connection, they were all about the Lord's and the quest for the box.

so far I am disappointed in the narrator.

Max has no emotions everything sounds and feels so flat. And I can barely tell the difference between the characters... although I just started the book and only on chapter 1! I am a huge fan of GS I have read every book in the LOTU series and pre ordered this and was quite looking forward to this story between Puck and Gilly, but I may have to get my credit back and read it myself
EDIT: while I am still struggling with the narrator I am completely in love with the storyline. GS never disappoints. if you have listened to this narrator before and enjoy his reading then this Audible is for you... but I truly recommend just buying the book and reading it yourself!!!! 💁🏽

Unexpected, exciting, and thoroughly enjoyable.

First off let me start off by saying I was never dead set on the whole William and Gilly thing. Honestly, it was a bit creepy to have such an “old man” thinking he was destined to be with a little girl. Because even when she turns 18, she is still a little girl, there isn’t some magic that happens so she will automatically discover a wealth of maturity and intellect. The Red Queen said so when she told Gilly she needs to grow up a bit a find out what she wanted. And I agree with Gilly, if they were destined, William would have found a way to keep it in his pants! So all of you who are judging this book without even reading it, you need to take a seat!

The Darkest Warrior was great to read, loads of fun and I think exactly what Gena intended all along for William and Gilly. And If she didn’t know who cares. These are her characters, her art, and her vision, she can do with it as she pleases. It’s up to us to sit back and enjoy the ride and trust that she knows what she is doing.

The only issue I had with the story is some of the characters are starting to have the same personalities and are not standing out. Which is a shame. I still want to delve into every story, and with so many new characters introduced it looks like Gena is a long way from slowing down.

If you love the books and enjoy the Author, trust where she is taking the story, even if you are disappointed it isn’t going where you want it to go, trust that it will end it a place that you will love. I know that is what I do. I am ready for the next Lords of the Underworld story. As for The Darkest Warrior, I am giving it 4 Boundless Stars, and it was unexpected, exciting, and thoroughly enjoyable.

Perfect!

if you like fairy tales you will love this book. I have listened to all of Gena Showalter books in the Lords of the Underworld series. Max is an incredible reader or actor. I love the way he reads these books. to say he is amazing is a huge understatement. I have listened and I have read the books as well and I can tell you I'm at a point where I don't want to read them anymore I just want to listen to him read them to me. he brings the characters to life in a way that truly captures the character. this book for me what's the best one yet and that's saying a lot. there have only been two books I was bored with or didn't get into his near as much in this series but this was the best book by far. for me a lot of the stories came together in this book. I found Michelle Walters Way of bringing the two main characters together genius. I never thought I would want Jillian to wind up with anyone other than William oh boy was I wrong. I highly recommend this book in the series and I hope that whoever reads this review enjoys the book as much as I did. just remember it is Paranormal Romance and if that's your genra you're then this is your book. Enjoy!

William or Puck? That is the question.

I read so many posts from people that were very upset that Gena dared to take Gillian away from William. How dare this author, that has spent so much time with these characters in her head, decide to follow a different path than was originally hinted at. That's the great thing about being an Author, you can change the story to however you want. I personally, am extremely happy that Gena chose to take that alternate path and have Gillian chose Puck. William was a security blanket for Gillian. Puck offered her a chance to move on with her life and grow. Gillian went through so much during the 501 years she was away from Puck. She started out as a meek, scared young girl and turned into an amazingly brilliant worrior women. She made a difference for the Shawazons. (Love this name by the way.) If she had been given to William, she never would have become the truly amazing person she grew to be. Towards the end of the book, Gena sets up situations to prove once and for all that Gillian belongs to Puck. William will always have a special place in Gillian's heart. And Puck is just amazing. He starts out in a bad situation, willing to do anything to change his destiny. Not realizing that he has set himself on a path that will give him everything he has ever wanted. If only he could just trust the people around him. I listened to this book way too fast and was sad to reach the end. Now to await the next book.

One of my favorites to date!

Loved it! I really enjoyed the interaction , wit and sarcasm of the characters. I like how they faced their fears, enemies become friends all for the greater good. I laughed, felt empathy and overall loved the story. Max is one of my favorite narrators and would of like more of a Irish accent for Puc. Loved how Gillian grew to become a bad ass from a terrified woman. Great story overall!

The HEA that Gillian Needed and it was wonderful!

Gillian has been a broken child for so long! William has been her comfort, her savior but even though many of you will not admit this, he has also held her back. Puck is unexpected! He is unbelievably strong, surprisingly gentle and unaware of Gillian's past. In Puck's world Gillian is finally able to grow up, to become the woman she was meant to be and to go through new trials to create a stronger woman. Puck supports and admires Gillian's growth. This may not be the story the readers wanted or expected but it is the story that Gillian needed and Puck is the man she was destined to conquer!

Spoiler

I do wish Gillian could of ended up with William. I was so rooting for them! But, Puck is nice and not a bad match. I’m glad she was able to grow into a woman fully and become stronger and a warrior in her own right. Overall a good story!
