Clover City, Colorado - 1888

A mysterious letter and the drop-dead handsome town marshal are the last things Mariah expects to find making rounds as a midwife.

Mariah McAllister plans to be married before her next birthday. Too bad Marshal Virgil Kincaid barely knows she's alive. Not one to give up easily, she's determined to show him she has an abiding passion for more than her work.

Virgil Kincaid loved a woman once - after she broke his heart, he spent three years in prison. Women can't be trusted, no matter how good they look. He's sworn off relationships in favor of Saturday night poker games. Life is simple - the way he wants it...until a stranger turns up dead in the road.

Forced to work side by side with Mariah, Virgil begins to wonder if she might be his second chance at love. As they trade kisses and oh so much more, he's willing to take the gamble. But when a killer threatens their once peaceful town, all bets are off.

I really liked this book. I’m always a bit skeptical of novellas. Too often they feel rushed and under developed. I was pleasantly surprised by this book which did not lack for a full storyline or supporting characters despite its brevity. I look forward to more stories by Gini Rifkin.

Short but not incomplete

This story is supposed to be in the 1800s, and I requested it because usually the language and content used in Historical novels is cleaner than what’s now out there, but it was not the case in this one. It seemed unrealistic for the era - too much sex in the minds of the heroes, etc.

The narrator’s voice was good for this type of Western.

Virgil and Mariah are one of the best love stories I’ve read in a long time. The author is a fantastic western style writer. Don’t pass this novella up! The story is short and sweet, and worth your time.

OMG this was amazing!

This quick listen is packed with a love story and mystery sure to keep your earbuds in! Gini Rifkin has written the story of Mariah and Virgil. Mariah, training to become a midwife, is on her way home from a house call, only to find a dead man in her path. Virgil, the sheriff comes out to the scene. Their attraction is palpable. But there is romance is not an easy one! Jealousy lurks in the corners as others have their eyes set on the sheriff. And who killed the man Mariah found? There are a few twists and turns and steamy passion keeping the story moving. I love well developed novellas, and Rifkin is an author who delivers.

Narrated by Richard L Walton, his deep raspy voice is perfect for this historical western romance. I love when a voice can match a time period and his is exactly what I expect to hear. He easily switches between characters and his female voices are great! Looking forward to more from him.

Great listen!

I got this story via audiobook boom and this is my voluntary review. This was a pretty good western that combined Scotland Yard with a small town sheriff, a spunky doctor's daughter, and a saloon girl turned hero. These characters produced a good storyline with some sex thrown in. The narrator brought out the emotions needed and made the story come to life. There were some predictable moments but overall the story was a quick listen that moved my day along. The sex did not overwhelm the story. There was a real story with two very nice HEAs.

Nice Sexy Western
