Publisher's Summary

When renowned archeologist Gav Gendin discovers the wreck of an Ancient starship, with a stasis pod and a still living member of the extinct aliens inside, it should be the greatest triumph of his career. Instead, it ends in disaster and leads to his son, Siv, being placed in cryogenic sleep.

A century later, Siv Gendin wakes to a world in decline, a world where you do what you must to survive. With the help of a snarky, sentient AI companion named Silky, Siv becomes a top procurement specialist.

Enslaved to the Shadowslip Guild, Siv has little hope of ever being his own man. Until they offer him freedom in exchange for completing a practically suicidal mission. His target: a young girl with uncanny abilities. Rival criminal guilds, foreign governments, and religious extremists will risk all-out war to get their hands on her - for good reason.

With her mysterious link to the Ancients, this girl could reshape human civilization, perhaps even bring back the golden age Siv knew as a child. But only if he is willing to defy the Shadowslip and risk everything to keep her safe.

The Benevolency Universe

For over 3,000 years a superintelligence called the Benevolence guided humanity through an age of unprecedented peace, prosperity, and technological advancement. Now, a century after its collapse, our enemies multiply as we struggle to maintain our starfaring civilization and recover technology we once took for granted. But the Benevolence kept many secrets to itself, secrets that could shape the future of humanity.

Utter Fun

The story had a wonderful take on the use of technology in the future, and the characters were flushed out enough that I was happy with the tid bits offered here and there. It was a good balance of expression of the character, and effort into the situations that arrived, whereas other books give you chapters of information in a 'data dump' style. I can't wait to listen to the rest of the series.

Excellent story buy the kindle version

I listen to a LOT of Scifi I always have an Audible and kindle book open. I’ve been reading Scifi for over 60 years. This is a promising Kindle book, it has humor, intriguing characters, action and science, well written and I will buy the Kindle version. But the narration is awful! After 3 chapters
I returned the book for that reason alone. The narrator talks so fast I had to play it at 3/4 time. There is very little differentiation between his narrative and character voices. It sounds like he is simply reading to me instead of performing. I hate to write negative reviews but the narrator really did a disservice to this story,

Good Story and interesting characters

I really liked the pace of the story over all, as a sense of urgency is heavily conveyed near the end, and plenty of suspense is generated as a result. The reader's accent (Scottish ?) is a bit tough to understand, at times, for an American speaking audience, but not so much so that it distracts from the story, but I did have to go over some parts again to understand what was said.

I look forward to more !

Without giving anything away...this is was my internal dialogue within 2 hrs of listening.

ohh..very Culture.....10 mins later ohh Polity...then..ah a bit of Hyperion. a smattering of Hamilton(No Messin').. Which is all very pleasing to these ears ! 3 hrs in i stopped and bought the remaining 2 books off audible.

Yes it feels like other universes, but manages to be unique in cool ways like its take on Hyperspace dimensions. The author is only young..the books are fast paced with lots of action and the central character is really a 2cm wide AI chip called Silky ! The books need to be longer, but that's maybe unfair compared with the other others mentioned.

Sarcastic AIs very much in the culture/polity style just does it for me. Recommended !

A fun space romp

Narrated by The Master, Penny Kenny, this book is an enjoyable start of a space opera reminiscent of Ian M Banks’s The Culture series (in this instance they’re called The Benevolence).

Characters are fun miscreants with roguish AIs to boot, and although the humour isn’t quite on a par with Banks, much of the charm is channeled through Kenny’s performance.
