Dr. Mark Spencer was a young, up-and-coming history and anthropology professor who was all too familiar with what happens to less advanced civilizations when suddenly exposed to others of considerably higher technology. There's only one survivor, and the culture witnessing magic isn't it. When modern-day Earth suddenly finds itself on the losing end of that proposition, a team of the world's best scientists is put together to find a solution. Of course the advanced society being friendly, Earth's citizens uniting, and the world's politicians working together for the common good would help tremendously, but...what if none of that were true?

Pretty good Sci-Fi

This is a tremendous story that is weighed down a little by the over the top sexual exploits of the main characters. The concept is great, the story woven around it is cool, there's lots of big ideas about future technology and the idea of freedom. There is a lot of sophomoric sexual prowess, but it's not graphic or in your face. This is not the best book I've ever read, but it's benefits outweigh it's detriments.

Enough unanswered questions for many books.

Good story with lots of interesting twists. Plenty of unanswered questions to spawn a series. Excellent narration.

Disappointing.

Some good science, and thought-provoking speculation, but it seems to have been written with the mindset of a hormone-driven adolescent boy.

Charlie Sheen goes to space.

Very interesting and engaging narrative. The main character is portrayed as a some kind of satirical sex god genius soldier scientist. it is not satirical.

Eh

It was ok but nothing to really get you interested and the same old one hero to win for the earth team. Not interested in more by writer. Narration was good.

Don’t listen to the haters.

This is some pretty standard HFY story with a little bit of Uplift to it. I’ve seen a lot of complaining about things like:
“There’s too much sex in this book!”
There’s not. There’s a lot of innuendo, but that’s about it.
“Women are too thirsty!”
The women in the book have agency and completely control their bodies.
“Another chosen one story?”
Again, it’s HFY. But the “humans are the prophecy” thing only comes at the end.
“The voices sound the same”
It’s Jeffery Kafer. You think this is bad, try the of Mars books.
This is not a bad book. It’s actually on the edge of pretty good. I look forward to hear the other books in the series, especially if it’s going where I think it’s going.

Just Dumb

I hung with it until chapter 22, but then I gave up. The sexual exploits of the main character were excessive and detracted from the progression of the story. There was also a preachy undertone that tried to pass as superior and enlightened insight. If the storyline developed faster then maybe the the unwelcome distractions could be forgiven, but almost nothing happened in real time (meaning not a flashback or summary) in the first 21 chapters that couldn’t have been dropped.

Great story, waiting to hear next in series

The only issue is that it is not possible to hear the difference in the characters by the voice actor. You are left guessing who is speaking and you have to memorize the characters names to follow the plot. I wish this were re-recorded by another actor, it'd be a huge success.

Great story,,,,, but the narrator

The narrator seems distracted
..............His voice we can't change, but if he could sound interested in what he's reading.

Great story. Hard to follow.

This was a really good story. Could have been more character development, but the story made up for it. What made this 4 instead of 5 star was that it was hard to follow who was talking. I'm not sure if it was the writing or the narration, that was the problem. Maybe both. I'm going to buy the next book in the series, so I did like it.
