Wanted: an engagement of convenience. Found: A noble suitor.
Raised on a remote Scottish estate by her adoring grandfather, Lady Theodora Worth has inherited an earldom as well as the land itself. But when an upstart duke challenges her claim to the title and the Ladykyrk estate, Thea is suddenly in need of a husband - in name, at least. An elderly neighbor with a thoroughly modern sensibility and a dashing great-nephew just might be the answer to Thea's prayers. Except she has no intention of marrying the first man she meets. That would be utterly ridiculous.
It just can't be him....
Lord William Cavensham is entirely too devoted to his family's estate - ever since he was jilted as a lad - to wed, but he agrees to meet the woman his aunt has taken under her wing - and introduce her to possible suitors. But after just one meeting with beautiful, spirited Thea, Will is determined to help her reclaim her title. And even moreso, he can't stop thinking that perhaps marriage to this bold, passionate woman may be the one thing he's been missing all along?

Lady Theodora Worth has my complete compassion for how she is thrown to the wolves with no training but lots of desire to save her home and the people who depend on her. Her honorable character is something any woman would be proud to exemplify. There are times my stomach tightened when she was put in uncomfortable positions and the author's portrayal of the actions and feelings at that moment are done to perfection.
Lord William Cavensham's character is basically a sweetheart. I am quite sure he would roll in his grave to hear me describe him as such but honestly, he is one of those heartthrob nice guys. Watching his character metamorphosis from being stuck on the past to moving into his future is not without some drama. It was actually quite amusing watching his light bulb go on.
As always there has to be some villain or trouble maker and Ferr-Colby fits the bill. You can feel his sliminess rolling off the pages but this slippery personality also makes him a tough opponent.
5 STARS for the meticulous orchestration of Will and Theo's personal growth in their lives.

I must confess that Thea's heart was pure gold and her struggles quickly became my own. I literally cried several times throughout this unputdownable tale. The ending was no different. I had huge fat tears on that last chapter.
How does each book by Janna MacGregor always leave me with a new favorite!? From the world building, scene descriptions, and multi-faceted characters, I always get whisked away. That's the bewitching, beautiful, and beguiling style of this Regency romance authoress.
Absolutely Loved This!

In 32 chapters one would expect a modicum of substance. Nope....nope.
Janna MacGregor is a hit or miss (mostly miss) author for me. I will finish the book....very quickly.....to find out what happens to the bad guy, but I will not listen again. Would return, if I could.
OMG......32 chapters of nonsense

It is just the resistance of the h/h that keeps things going along a very boring path ( as I was writing this, the hero comes up with a "fake engagement", wow, who saw that coming?!?. The topics of the heroine's wealth and hero's jilting are in every chapter. She's beautiful and rich, he's beautiful and powerful, so I can't really care, as there is no real struggle, so will not have any character development....again, just very boring.
The narration is excellent, and I bought the book for his wonderful skills.
I like this series very much and the first 3 books were great. Not sure about this one, which makes the case for trilogies! Not a waste of a credit, but I stopped at chapter 17. I'll pick it up later and determine if the story improves
Boring
