Publisher's summary

A feminist manifesto rooted in classic Vedic teachings and brought to life through India’s primary goddess archetypes

Within you is a wellspring of strength and resilience, the ability to create and enjoy abundance, and an expansive sense of inner freedom and divinity. Yet after centuries of living in patriarchal societies, many women don’t realize how powerful they are—or how much they’ve been enculturated to keep their true nature hidden.

In Roar Like a Goddess, trailblazing Vedic spiritual teacher Acharya Shunya empowers women everywhere to step into their divine immensity and lead powerful, abundant, and wise lives through her revolutionary revisioning of ancient India’s primary goddess archetypes:

  • Part 1 features the Goddess Durga—A role model who vanquishes internalized misogyny and institutionalized patriarchy, Durga teaches you how to take back your full feminine power.
  • Part 2 introduces the Goddess Lakshmi—Known for her beauty and generous spirit, Lakshmi guides you to cultivate unshakable inner contentment and soul-aligned abundance.
  • Part 3 celebrates the Goddess Saraswati—The ultimate teacher of our deepest journey to Self, Saraswati illuminates the gifts of wisdom, peace, and inner freedom.

Throughout Roar Like a Goddess, Shunya honors her progressive Vedic roots while breaking the shackles of tradition to bring modern-day women an inclusive, feminist spirituality. Sharing classic myths, original insights, and empowering practices, Shunya offers a profound process for awakening the many faces of the goddess within.

This audiobook version of Roar Like a Goddess includes a series of bonus contemplations and teachings, recorded live by the author.

Critic reviews

“Acharya Shunya, the first female head of an ancient Vedic lineage, brings the powerful Hindu goddesses Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati alive for our modern context with her vivid pre-patriarchal interpretations of their qualities and activities. She offers direct practices to locate these goddess energies within ourselves. The book provides an ongoing point of reference to refresh our goddess connections in the face of everyday challenges. Her personal stories and those of other women offer inspiration and guidance for readers to strengthen personal agency, dedication to self-care, and care of others based on wisdom, self-respect, and respect for all life.” —Rachael Wooten, PhD, Diplomate Jungian analyst and author of Tara: The Liberating Power of the Female Buddha

“In this modern compendium of ancient Hindu goddess mythology, Archarya Shunya teaches us how to harness our divine rage with power and precision—like focused fury from the forehead of the goddess! Thank you, Archarya, for this potent gift. The aim of divine rage is not vengeance, but to reorder the world.” —Valarie Kaur, author of See No Stranger and founder of the Revolutionary Love Project

Roar Like a Goddess explains the unique and complex theology of Shakti in an accessible manner . . . to all who seek an understanding of reality that views the body, mind, and consciousness as inhabited fully and without limit by the Divine. Acharya Shunya opens up the possibility of self-transformation and self-affirmation through the practice and path of the Divine Feminine—to all who have known oppression.” —Rita D. Sherma, PhD, author of Radical Immanence: An Ecological, Emancipatory, Hindu Theology of the Divine Feminine and director and associate professor, Graduate Theological Union Center for Dharma Studies

Thank you

Very relaxing and empowering listen. It is very creative and beautiful, interspersed with reflections and meditations. I enjoyed how the reader can sense her conversing with the audience, not simply reading words from a script. I wanted to make sure I left a review in support of this inspiring book teaching me how to be strong like a goddess, and exist despite fear- how to resist and face it. How to be discontent, and feel anger in an empowered way, because you should not suffer in silence. And be grateful, graceful and authentic through it all. How to lead an abundant, prosperous life. How to be flowing creatively. I’m so happy I found this book, and thank you to the author for your wisdom, words, and gift of language through the soul and the great goddesses that flowed through. Namaste.

Roaring as who we are

Listening to Acharya Shunya's audiobook Roar Like a Goddess narrated by AcharyaJi herself during Navratri has been a daily awakening and remembrance of my innate Goddess power, prosperity, and deep inner peace.

The Goddess Knowledge, enlivened sacred storying telling, artful sound effects, and each end of chapter contemplations are all bringing the Goddess Reality alive within me.

Jai Maa!

Loved It!

So empowering! I loved that the author read it herself and she chose such a great series of bells and other musical accompaniment that created a truly peaceful ambience. I enjoyed learning about the goddesses and Durga is my new mom archetype all the way. Thank you, Acharya Shunya for sharing this with the world.

Call to action

This audiobook is full of inspiration and I feel like an important part of me has reawakened to its many messages. I love that Acharya has narrated her own book, her voice is soothing and at times dramatic when retelling the ancient myths and stories. I have already gifted copies to my 29 year old daughter and a good friend and plan to re-listen again and again.

Insight, delight, new world view, yes please! Delivered beautifully.

What I was surprised was a gift of this book was a new world view. It was her description of Durga that I found most intriguing. She is the goddess of creation and destruction. If only The over culture saw destruction as part of the ultimate plan. I loved hearing the stories of each goddess. The author is a wonderful story teller. I love that she offered meditations, contemplations and actions with each goddess. I loved having a fuller sense of Lakshmi. The idea is that these powerful goddesses live within us. This provides insight and offers a new lens to find meaning in your life. I found myself pausing it and writing notes the whole time. This is soul stuff and worth your time. 💕

Authentic Goddess Wisdom

Acharya Shunya’s wisdom flows like the river Saraswati. Authenticity like hers is a rare thing in these modern times. She is simultaneously soothing like one’s own mother and goading you to get out of your own way and stop sleep walking. Loved it!
