Publisher's Summary

Contains Books 3 and 4 of the Rise of the Ancient Gods series.

Torment of the Ancient Gods, Book 3:

In Jon Ryan's life, two billion years down his time stream, he's see many an odd thing. But mixing in the bizarro world of the Ancient Gods has burdened him to the brink with the crazy, the inexplicable, and the just plain wrong. But he remains true to his mission. He must stop the Cleinoid threat to his universe. An impossible appearing task to be certain.

Then Jon suffers an undeniably awkward setback. He is killed. Gáwar, the uber-powerful god of demons, smashes Jon to bits and then eats the little pieces. Bad day for Jon Ryan. Bad day for all our hopes. His friends struggle to go on, to defeat the Ancient Gods, but what seemed impossible before is now not even an acceptable pipe dream.

Despirate to find a capable team, Sapale reunites with Mirraya/Slapgren, the Deft master-witch. Along with Daleria and Tono, they undertake the dangerous and problematic task of locating the alternate timeline Jon Ryan, EJ. They suspect he is able to kill the Cleinoid gods and are anxious to learn his secrets. But EJ is as challenging to deal with as always. Any help he might supply always comes at a price that is difficult to justify.

Wrath of the Ancient Gods, Book 4:

Only Jon Ryan could make such a mess out of the afterlife. Almost a year into his battle against the Ancient Gods, Jon Ryan has little to show for his herculean efforts. The angry gods are surging viciously in our universe. No society can even slow their onslaught. In the Cleinoid universe, they've been stopped for reinforcing their brilliantly successful war in our home, but only just.

Jon and his crew must attack the single most powerful and evil force in the realm of the Ancient Gods.

The odds are astronomically against Jon. His enemies have never tasted defeat. His only advantage is the inconstant loyalty of a once-evil monster Cleinoid corrupted by Jon. And then, Jon decides to go to hell - literally. He will attempt to free from damnation the architect of Cleinoid evil, the master megalomaniac who might just be able to kill off his kin. But, if you plan is to go to hell and resurrect the worst guy who ever live, aren't you asking - begging - for disaster? Not if you're Jon Ryan, #fighterpilot.

A bargin in hell to kill the ancient gods, hum

This writer is one of the best. If you great writing good characters and sarcastic wit you will love all the books in this series. The narrator is easily one if the best you will listen to. Get this book and if the series. In the first book if you're not laughing in the first few minutes you have no sense of humor. The first book is the Galaxy on Fire.

Bad little boy humor

I love the Ryan universe but this god series is the worst one by far. The write and the humor have been been phoned in.

Craig Robertson misses targets?

I like his Yidish type of humor, but loses me on the storyline. Like, a man who is going to jail for the aledged killing of his wife and the android John finds natural matter of gold? What happened to the accused man? I don't know? Noone knows including the author? We never went back to what started this book in the first place, including the author?

I quit listening 4 times in 1 day

Seriously, I'm completing this story arch more out of academic integrity than any affinity for this universe.

John is fun. John and Al were great but is decidedly absent from this set in any meaningful interaction.. The wife and Tonio are total rubes. EJ is about puddle deep.

The Brendas are about the only worthwhile lore here.

Again, and I hate to.overuse the comparison, the plot depth is equal to a light puddle. The dialogue is pedantic and repetitive.

Snooze and a wasted credit.

A 14 hour Loonie Toons skit

It felt like 14 hours of Bugs and Daffy saying “Duck Season I Rabbit Season” over and over.

Decent continuation, weyuoth caviats

Decent store, but the constsnt confuse speak is going to lose me soon. I get it, John is witty and somewhat clever, but my god, does every conversation in the book between 2 characters have to be an endless string of one being confused by the other?

Enjoying this immensely

Seems this universe has zero boundaries which leads to some truly incredible twists, turns and unexpected occurrences. Looking forward to the next one. I'm about to search and find out if it's available.

If you enjoy Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy....

you'll love the whole John Ryan series. Seriously. The nay-sayers giving bad reviews probably aren't a fan of those either.

A pity

I’ve enjoyed every single Ryan story to date - but the ancient gods is just too out there.

Difficult characters, unfunny / predictable dialogue - I really had hoped for better.

I’m committed to book 5/6 so will be giving them a go but it feels super slow and padded out - it could have been massively accelerated.

Too many characters left without an end story / critical role which others have described as “padding” . I agree…..

10 hours of filler

This is by far the worst trilogy in the Ryanverse (so far). This book was also largely pointless and imagine just filler for the final pack of books 5&6. The writing is sloppy, unfunny and really seems like they’ve aimed it at kids. Such as shame as the previous trilogies were great

A steady decline.

For the first time in the Ryanverse, I've found myself becoming incredibly disappointed. This new series feels like its target audience is that of a pre-teen demographic.

Everything just feels so placid for JR and his crew. Their dialogue (for whatever reason) is censored. Peppering sentences with as many 'Heck's and darn's' as a Jehovah's witness stubbing a toe. The 'banter' between the crew is borderline cringeworthy.

Don't even get me started on the sickly interactions that the couple's keep having. Exchanging (in detail) intimate and cutesy little remarks, inside jokes, nose bink's, hip bumps galore. At times, it felt like I was stuck in an elevator with a teenage couple displaying far too much PDA. It's genuinely painful to listen to.

Spoiler alert - nobody (interesting) dies. Ever. There's never any struggle. Everything constantly works out for JR and his team, to the point where every endeavour had me rolling my eyes in preempted disappointment. Give us story arcs.

I've made it this far in the series, so I'm going to ride it out. on the off chance that the author is reading this - FFS give us GRIT, SWEARING, DEATH AND STRUGGLE. The Forever series delivered on these elements.

Cheeky little ghost critters squealing "I'm hecka fun" is absolutely not what me and the other listeners signed up for.

I really like this series funny adventure set in the far future. It reminds me of Gulivers travels with the comment on the civilisations John meets

Past its peak

The forever story was AMAZING, Galaxy on Fire was good but unfortunately, it's peaked and I'm really not fussed about continuing the story.

Please don't get me wrong it's great to hear some of the same characters come back but you can tell its been rushed and with less thought going into what the characters do and say, there is also a shift in a language where vulgar things are been thrown in just for the sake of it, certain words in particular, it's like the author just discovered them... I was getting annoyed at the number of times I heard the phrase its a John plan.

Can't say that i'll be fussed about getting the new one when it's out.
