Publisher's summary

From the beloved author of Just My Type and Lease on Love comes a new romantic comedy in which a former actress-turned-screenwriter finds herself back in the spotlight, only for her romantic lead to be the one man she can’t stand.

Emmy Harper is no stranger to Hollywood, having penned some of the most popular movies of the past few years. But her latest project has hit a standstill—unable to find the perfect leading lady, Emmy’s been recruited to take on the role herself, dusting off acting skills she hasn’t used in over a decade.

Things take a turn for the worse when a she's left with the one costar she can’t trust: Grayson West. A blockbuster action hero known for his megawatt smile and impossible abs, Grayson is anyone’s dream of a romantic lead. Too bad Emmy still blames him for her disastrous first movie and the early end to her acting career.

The friction between the two risks tanking the movie, and no one knows if it’s lingering awkwardness from their youth or unresolved sexual tension. But if they want to save the production—and their own careers—they need to get their acts together quickly, both on and off camera.

Critic reviews

One of ELLE’s Best Romance Books of 2024
One of Shelf Awareness’s Best Books of the Week

"Ballard (Just My Type) delivers a feisty and fast-paced Hollywood fantasy in this addictive contemporary . . . It’s a fun, exciting peek at the magic that can happen behind the camera.” Publishers Weekly

“Ballard creates a winning romantic comedy full of simmering chemistry. Emmy and Grayson’s intense sexual tension makes the pages fly by. The cozy small-town setting gives the story all the charm of a Hallmark movie—but with way more steam and snark. A fun and sexy ode to rom-coms, full of joy and chemistry.” Kirkus Reviews, starred review

"Ballard's lively and fun rom-com will have readers hoping that these two have their second chance."Booklist

FALON BALLARD THE WOMAN THAT YOU ARE!!!!!!!!

I am such a huge fan of Falon’s and I think this might be her best book yet. This is perfect for fans of Ava Wilder, but Falon differentiates her work by incorporating her personal knowledge of writing screenplays. Right on Cue perfectly captures the second-chance adjacent relationship between two actors who wouldn’t know what they wanted if it smacked them right in the face (literally.)

over zealous, yelling constantly narrator

The story was what you expect when choosing books in the genre and I enjoyed it. The narrator screaming ever line was so grating I almost quit the book. It was just so dramatic at such a high and consistent level that my brain could not get a break. The whiny and moaning voice she used for everything just made it difficult to like the character. I wanted her to get some dignity and talk like an adult to herself and others. I’ll try another book by this author, but definitely need to look at who the narrator is first.

Fantastic Romcom

This was a fantastic romcom from the female perspective who is a romance screenwriter. This story had all the feels, the sexy moments, and an excellent storyline. Definitely worth the read if you are looking for sexy and funny. The e audiobook was well done by the narrator. I listened at 2x speed with 1.75-2x speed being my normal audiobook speed.

I made it 50% into this audiobook and cannot listen to one more minute of this. These characters are supposed to be in their 30s? Really wanted to love this :/
