Twenty-five years after the publication of his groundbreaking first book, Malcolm Gladwell returns with “curiosity and humor” in this New York Times bestseller that reframes the lessons of The Tipping Point in a startling and revealing light (Shannon Carlin).

Why is Miami…Miami? What does the heartbreaking fate of the cheetah tell us about the way we raise our children? Why do Ivy League schools care so much about sports? What is the Magic Third, and what does it mean for racial harmony? In this provocative new work, Malcolm Gladwell returns for the first time in twenty-five years to the subject of social epidemics and tipping points, this time with the aim of explaining the dark side of contagious phenomena.

Through a series of riveting stories, Gladwell traces the rise of a new and troubling form of social engineering. He takes us to the streets of Los Angeles to meet the world’s most successful bank robbers, rediscovers a forgotten television show from the 1970s that changed the world, visits the site of a historic experiment on a tiny cul-de-sac in northern California, and offers an alternate history of two of the biggest epidemics of our day: COVID and the opioid crisis. Revenge of the Tipping Point is Gladwell’s most personal book yet. With his characteristic mix of storytelling and social science, he offers a guide to making sense of the contagions of modern world. It’s time we took tipping points seriously.

Editorial Review

What’s wrong with the world today?
I’m so excited to hear Malcolm Gladwell's latest audiobook, Revenge of the Tipping Point, which revisits and reframes his groundbreaking concepts from 25 years ago. The promise of gripping stories about everything from bank robbers to forgotten TV shows, combined with Gladwell's unique insights into social phenomena, has me eager to press play as soon as it hits my library. I'm particularly intrigued by how he'll explore the dark side of what he calls “contagious phenomena” and what new perspectives he'll offer on issues like the COVID pandemic and the opioid crisis. With all of the technological, political and social developments that have happened in the past two and a half decades, Gladwell’s newest listen couldn’t have come at a more critical cultural moment. — Rachael X., Audible Editor

Compelling and full of interesting ideas, stories, and facts, but, as always, Gladwell either skews some things to match his premise, or ignores alternative explanations entirely. For example, when discussing how cardiologists who move from a state where femoral catheter insertion is normal, to Buffalo, where wrist insertion is used (as in nearby Canada), Gladwell uses this as proof that people adhere to the norms of their location. He does not consider that, perhaps, the hospital in Buffalo has equipment set up and nursing staff fully trained to handle that particular procedure, forcing the new doctor to use that method. In discussing the Holocaust, he pretty much states almost no one in America knew about it until NBC broadcast Holocaust in 1978. I remember all students at my Catholic New Jersey high school in the 1960's being required to watch "Night and Fog", the graphic 1956 documentary about the concentration camps. Herman Wouk's novel "War and Remembrance" was a nationwide bestseller that dealt extensively and graphically with the Holocaust in 1971. Why is Miami so huge in Medicare fraud? Gladwell ignores one simple explanation: an overabundance of elderly people on Medicare. Again, in his section on gay marriage, he prominently features George W. Bush calling for a Constitutional Amendment banning gay marriage, but never mentions Bill Clinton signing the Defense of Marriage Act or Obama's support for that law. In vilifying Harvard University, he compares its carefully engineered student makeup to an elite technical college that is 46% Asian, hardly an apples-to-apples comparison. He ascribes all of it to an attempt to keep white protestants dominate, instead of maybe also an attempt to maintain a diverse student body that reflects the nation. Liberal politics and white guilt are a constant undercurrent.

Fascinating, But a Lot of Sleight of Hand

If you have read any of Malcolm Gladwell‘s books in the past, you will enjoy this one. For a person that has read an extensive amount of social psychology research he takes things and puts them together, and put them in a format in which the average person can understand and enjoy. What I thought was so interesting about this one was at least half of the book I knew where he was going because I knew all the data and what had actually occurred I got the book on Tuesday and finish reading it today. I’ll probably reread it again this weekend!.

Excellent analogy of epidemics!

It doesn’t get better than audiobooks by Malcolm Gladwell and Pushkin. He tells great stories, connects them expertly, and the production value a second to none. Worth a listen.

A great audiobook of a great book

After listening to the book Revenge of the Tipping Point. It has such amazing observations that, for some reason, it has prepared me for another Donald Trump presidency.

Amazing Intelligent Observations demonstrating that we either learn or suffer the consequences.

I could listen to Malcolm Gladwell read the phone book, so the fact that the books he writes are written with as much charisma as they are style and empathy just makes me drunk on his work. Love it.

compelling stories and propulsive questions

I read the Tipping Point many years ago, and had no idea Gladwell was revisiting the topic. It is an interesting look at why humans act like we do, and how much we don’t realize that we aren’t always choosing things without outside influence. I can’t get behind the author fully though, since he’s really big on hateful Jordan Peterson. This has definitely made me less of a Gladwell fan.

So many “ah ha!” moments!
