“A big, blowzy romp through the rainbow eccentricities of three generations of crazy bayou debutantes.”
Atlanta Journal-Constitution

“A very entertaining and, ultimately, deeply moving novel about the complex bonds between mother and daughter.”
Washington Post

“Mary McCarthy, Anne Rivers Siddons, and a host of others have portrayed the power and value of female friendships, but no one has done it with more grace, charm, talent, and power than Rebecca Wells.”
Richmond Times-Dispatch

The incomparable #1 New York Times bestseller—a book that reigned at the top of the list for an remarkable sixty-eight weeks—Rebecca Wells’s Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood is a classic of Southern women’s fiction to be read and reread over and over again. A poignant, funny, outrageous, and wise novel about a lifetime friendship between four Southern women, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood brilliantly explores the bonds of female friendship, the often-rocky relationship between mothers and daughters, and the healing power of humor and love, in a story as fresh and uplifting as when it was first published a decade and a half ago. If you haven’t yet met the Ya-Yas, what are you waiting for?

Love the book and the movie. After having seen the movie numerous time, I kept hearing the characters as the actors and actresses from the movie.

Laughed & cried & had a southern drawl with a Cajun twist by the time I finished listening to all the Sisters lol! Great performance!

I’m never one for “in-depth” sex scene descriptions, and this one just tripped a bit across my comfort level, but overall not grimacing so. I like the reality of life’s hurts and wounds mixed with the joy, healing, disregard of self wants that demonstrates true friendship and sisterhood.

This book is such a wonderful read. It can be slow in some parts, but it resonated so much in my heart and made me feel so seen in certain points.

Mother and Daughters Don’t Have to Know Everything

An honest look at both the tender and the traumatic aspects of a mother daughter relationship, the priceless gift of friendship, and overwhelming power of love. This story candidly acknowledges the intense pain of family dysfunction and eventually leads to the beginnings of understanding and forgiveness. It will strike a chord and bring some clarity to our own imperfect and precious sisterhoods.

Magical, beautiful, honest

Rebecca Welles draws out in beautiful detail the messiness of The Human Condition. this would be a wonderful women's book club read. Would also be cathartic for a mother-daughter to read/discuss. ♡

Vivi-cious Detail!

I've loved this book since it was first published. Judith Ivey brings these strong women to life in a way that makes you feel like they're your best friends. You want to laugh and cry and scream, and in the end you know your are a YaYa.

I watched the movie years ago and loved it. it reminded me of my own life in some ways- with exception of extra drama and southern roots. I read reviews that people were upset as this book presented as "it's okay to abuse your children". but that was not my reaction to either book or movie. after a complicated relationship with my own mother this was a familiar journey of realizing that our parents do the best they can. and sometimes their best is not great or even okay. sometimes a parents best is awful and hurts more. but that they are people too and so are you.
I was able to separate the book from the movie, but I will say my connection lies more with the movie. don't get me wrong 5 stars all the way but the way the movie adapted some scenes to flow a lot more seamlessly. could have done without wade/sidda interaction also, not sure why it annoyed me.

I recommend this book to anyone with complicated family relationships who want to believe they aren't alone with those relationships.

loved.
