Publisher's summary

A ranger’s duty. The rotten heart of a king. Rebellion spilled from the blood of family.

Having fled Spinesend following a calamitous encounter atop one of the city’s towers, Rew and his companions face a long journey across a dangerous land to the city of Carff, the seat of Prince Valchon. The treacherous spellcaster Alsayer fled there, along with Kallie Fedgley, but finding them without attracting the murderous gaze of the prince might be impossible.

During the journey, Rew and the others uncover sadistic plots by the princes against each other, and they garner the attention of the king himself. The younglings must sharpen their skills for what is to come, and Rew must command the courage to finally face his past.

In the third book of the King’s Ranger series, the shroud of secrecy around the king, his sons, and the terrible necromancy that has kept the family in power is yanked away. The Investiture is just the beginning of a terrible truth that endangers all who know it. The stakes are revealed, and failure means an eternity of damnation.

The King’s Ranger is a classic fantasy adventure, perfect for fans of Michael J. Sullivan, Brent Weeks, James Islington, and AC Cobble’s Benjamin Ashwood Series.

Even better than the first two books

I picked up the first book, mostly out of curiosity. It was on a one day sale.

I would categorize the first two books as “really good, but not exceptional.”

This books is head and shoulders better than the first two.

I found it easier to follow and much more engaging. As I wrote, when I reviewed book two, I had to really pay attention to keep track of all of the characters and the threads.

In this book, we find out much more about the underlying plot (of the Investiture) and more about Rew’s backstory.

The only drawback, if there is one, is that Cobble threw in a few characters that I found really didn’t further the plot or the story.

The book ends on quite a cliffhanger. I am eagerly looking forward to book four.

the next in an exciting adventure fantasy series

an interesting plot with twists and turns and not predictable some of the characters I really disliked are becoming a little more likable and it'll be interesting to see what happens and then the next book book four of course Simon Vance did his usual great job on the narration

A constantly evolving story

A story draws you in as it continues to grow and evolve into ever more complex activities for the characters as they make their way to address the issues they must confront.

I both love and hate this series.

So, I like the characters and the universe and the setup. What I hate is the main story pace. Even three books in, we still don't know exactly who the ranger is and they just keep teasing it out. Enough already. It's making me want to just drop the series. It feels like we've spent thirty hours traveling two miles. It just gets to the point where I'm losing patience with the books. I'd love to know what happens, but not quite enough to keep driving down a two lane street stuck behind a bulldozer.
