Publisher's summary
The Sunday Times best seller: an uplifting account of hope and healing by GP Gavin Francis.
When it comes to illness, sometimes the end is just the beginning. Recovery and convalescence are words that exist at the periphery of our lives - until we are forced to contend with what they really mean.
Here, GP and writer Gavin Francis explores how - and why - we get better, revealing the many shapes recovery takes, its shifting history and the frequent failure of our modern lives to make adequate space for it.
Characterised by Francis' beautiful prose and his view of medicine as 'the alliance of science and kindness', Recovery is an audiobook about a journey that most of us never intend to make. Along the way, he unfolds a story of hope, transformation and the everyday miracle of healing.
Critic reviews
"I cannot think of anybody - patient or doctor - who will not be helped by reading this short and profound book." (Henry Marsh)
"A lovely little book." (Michael Rosen)

Soothing and enlightening
I really enjoyed this book enough that I will listen to it again. I’m older now and always admire medical professionals who are driven to care. It helped me remember the importance of recovery as a process. The way he shared his perspective helped me see a physician as a collaborator in the process of healing and rethink healing, care and recovery.

Revelatory
Anyone who has suffered from a difficult illness and is seeking hope and perspective should read this humanistic appreciation of the recovery process. As the author says, medical professionals should be seen more as gardeners than mechanics. So much of convalescence is about taking a holistic attitude to healing, taking our time and using the process to find new strength in ourselves.

The latest groundbreaking tome from Tim Ferriss, the number-one New York Times best-selling author of The 4-Hour Workweek. For the last two years, I've interviewed more than 200 world-class performers for my podcast, The Tim Ferriss Show. The guests range from super celebs (Jamie Foxx, Arnold Schwarzenegger, etc.) and athletes (icons of powerlifting, gymnastics, surfing, etc.) to legendary Special Operations commanders and black-market biochemists. For most of my guests, it’s the first time they’ve agreed to a two-to-three-hour interview.

Russ Harris offers a surprising solution to low self-confidence, shyness, and insecurity: Rather than trying to "get over" our fears, he says, the secret is to form a new and wiser relationship with them. Paradoxically, it's only when we stop struggling against our fearfulness that we begin to find lasting freedom from it.

These days, no one in America feels immune to violence. But now, in this extraordinary, groundbreaking book, the nation's leading expert on predicting violent behavior unlocks the puzzle of human violence and shows that, like every creature on earth, we have within us the ability to predict the harm others might do us and get out of its way. Contrary to popular myth, human violence almost always has a discernible motive and is preceded by clear warning signs.
