The main character is a complete moron

I’ve never been so annoyed at a main character so much in my life. She made the stupidest choices and her way of thinking was so naive. She basically deserves everything that happened to her in the book because she never learns and is completely selfish. However because she was such a train wreck, I kept listening because you couldn’t help but wonder what bad decisions she would make next. This is the perfect book to describe what choices to never make and don’t think like this.

Maddening

Great narration, storyline kept me engaged…just to see how it played out. It’s not often you hate the main character in a story… but this woman was so frustrating!

Sorry, NO!

There is nothing 'thrilling' about a 40 year old teacher having sex with a student. Sat through 4 hours of this, thinking there's got to be more to this story, but I just couldn't take 7.5 hours more of the inappropriate sexual content.

Not worth the time invested

The main character shows such a lack or morals and judgement that it was painful. I did finish it but found it to be a waste of time invested. Just hate to not complete a book. Have loved her other books so this was just - in general - a disappointment. Narration was as pleasant as it could be with the storyline.

Misleading genre placement

I don’t know how this ended up in the mystery/psychological thriller category. This was just a messed up “romance” novel. 100% drama with no mystery and no psychological thriller. Just psychotic characters. I don’t know why I even finished it! I kept waiting for the crime, which I guess did happen all the way at the end but it was in no way thrilling. Just a stupid lead character who made terrible choices and we had to hear all the details of those choices and their consequences. Totally not worth it!

Wish I had never started

Stupidest main character ever. Totally implausible and unreadable.

I never stop a book once started, but I’ll make an exception for this one.

Not as impressed

I really like you as an author Gemma but this one just didn't do it for me. He was 18 but come on...she is his teacher none the less. It makes it so inappropriate. I did finish it because curiosity alone, I had to know the ending but Izzy drove me nuts. I mean her choices & lack of figuring out how she to handle situations properly nor did she she know that she should have never touched Nicky no matter how tempting he could be. She was missing something in her marriage that Nicky gave her BUT the second he turned into a psycho she should have cut it off & when he he started doing certain things to taunt her (don't want to give away the plot) she should have just straight out said who he was to her right then & there instead of letting it dragged out & letting him hurt others but she protected herself instead. what a let down!! I will still read your books but I just hope you don't write anymore books like this.

very good

it was a good story and a bit different, it involved mainly 6 people, but it was very intriguing. the narrator was very good as well, putting in the right amount of variations . all in all I thought it was a good book.

THE most idiotic female ever!

Hard to believe in 2020 an author could create the main female character (Izzy) to be like this one. In some parts I really did consider just giving up, but aside from Izzy, the rest of the book was actually fine (including all the other characters). I must say do like Georgia Maguire as the narrator of Gemma Rogers books.

Easy listen!

I really enjoyed this book and listened to it in no time at all. One thing people probably give it a lower rating for is the fact the plot is pretty predictable, but however it still enjoyed listening to. It’s one of those “what’s going to happen next” ones, which I like! The narrator was excellent and well written. 5 stars.

Irritating.

It is difficult to read a book when you cannot believe the main character. Found it stretched the bounds of believability to the extreme and lead character irritated me beyond belief. Gave up after the 6 chapter.

Good book, pulled me in

Good book, really got me interested, although the naivety of an educated woman seemed a bit far fetched. Ending was weak considering it could have been so explosive

Awful

Haven’t listened to anything as bad as this for years. So unrealistic I found myself shouting at it, tutting, and sighing. Don’t waste your time.

Interesting

I found this book long winded and the storyline repetitive. The ending wasn't expected with no conclusion to that Nicky had got away with it.

Cringeworthy. Really glad I didn’t use a credit getting it!

This was one of those “I’ve started so I’ll finish” books! If you can ignore a female lead who’s so pathetically spineless you’d think the book was set 100 years ago, you’ll be fine!

Seriously?! Are we actually supposed to buy into a 40 year old women who crumples into a perpetually gibbering mess over an 18 year old who has her wrapped around his “finger”, because she’s so desperate she’s incapable of keeping her legs closed in his presence?! Do they still even exist in 2022? In fact, did they ever?! I spent the entire book willing her to grow a backbone, but it never happened. As my title said, cringeworthy.

Tbh I’ve only been listening to Gemma Rogers because they’re included in my membership and I’d rather save my subscription credits to use on books I actually want to listen to.

The narrator sounds about 12, and her breathless attempts at gravitas don’t do these books any favours whatsoever. She’d be absolutely perfect for children’s books, or romance novels, but she’s a poor choice for (what’s supposed to be) suspenseful drama.

It definitely should have been read by someone who at least sounds older and more serious. It wouldn’t have helped the storyline credibility, but at least it would have made it less like listening to Book at Bedtime…

I’m off work at the moment recovering from an eye op, so it filled some hours, without using up any of my credits. That’s about all I can say…

Thriller? Not really.

Pleasant to listen too, a bit tedious with mundane details. Difficult to relate to any of the main characters.
Certainly not a gripping thriller, more like a conundrum of her own making and she continues to make bad choices right until the end.

This was painful to finish - the protagonist was so selfish and self pitying with no regards for her daughter. I was so relieved when I reached the silly ending. Don't waste your time!

Totally predictable

Narration suited the text, other than that, glad I was listening when doing other things - ticked off the predictable events one by one as they happened.
