Music, fame and a lifelong friendship.

In the early '80s, best friends Sara Dallin and Keren Woodward arrived at the YWCA in London, with their sights set on careers in journalism and the media...but that wasn’t to be.

London was the most vibrant and culturally innovative of places, and within the whirl of clubs, parties and new friends, a chance meeting with former Sex Pistol Paul Cook changed everything. Moving into Malcolm McLaren’s old office, they started rehearsing and singing background vocals for Paul’s new band before teaming up with Sara’s college friend Siobhan and forming their own group.

It wasn’t long before they’d made their first appearance on Top of the Pops, wearing clothes they’d made themselves and not sure which camera to look at. Who could have imagined that this would be the birth of one of the biggest-selling female bands of all time? Bananarama!

From a groundbreaking performance at The Brits, to sold-out world tours, party games with George Michael, hanging out with Andy Warhol in New York and a Guinness World Record, Bananarama’s DIY-style and attitude inspired a generation, obliterating all previous notions of what a girl band was or could be. Whether opening up about the challenges of making it in a male-dominated industry, balancing motherhood and fame, the hairstyles and TV interviews they’d rather forget, or the joys of writing and recording new music, Sara and Keren are honest, revealing and hilarious.

Really Saying Something is the story of two friends who continue to pursue their dreams their way - and have a great time doing it. It is a celebration of determination and a lifelong friendship, with an unbeatable soundtrack.

Really saying nothing

I’m a huge fan. I have loved Bananarama since the very beginning. Sara and Keren do a great job telling non-stories. Every story is filled with the famous people they met. The exclusive clubs they went to. The rapturous receptions they received but no substance. I enjoyed the giggling banter but I don’t really know anymore about them. A whole chapter on their friendship with George Michael, he was generous and kind but nothing on Keren’s marriage to Andrew Ridgely. They talk a lot about being women in a male dominated business but don’t really give any details. The last line Keren utters feels like a dig. All in all a big miss.

Just loved how keren & sarah are so playful as they read. Its truly like they are having a real chat with one another and the reader over a cocktail. #whatajoy!

A fun listen

Unlike many audio books this is made more fun due to the ladies breaking script for funny asides and fits of giggles. This made for a feeling of friendship and a chat between mates reminiscing about good times as well as a detailed look at Bananaramas career.
I really enjoyed the girls story and would recommend this audio book. I wasn’t a massive fan of the music but as an 80s kid this book reminded me of many good times.

Banananono

Truly dull, an endless list of name dripping and self celebration, pointless anecdotes dray narrated

Brilliant

My favourite audible purchase. I bought the book too, but love hearing Sara and Keren narrate (and their asides and frequent cracking up) that make it a joy from start to finish. I heard a rumour it was brilliant and it is!

Really Just Giggling

Sorry this just didn’t appeal to me at all. It was really juvenile and felt like it was being read aloud by two teenagers who kept giggling while reading a schoolbook aloud. I also didn’t enjoy the storyline or lack of it, it was quite boring and I found the I ended up disliking the girls instead of liking them, like I did, before I read the book

Hilarious and very revealing. it's such a lovely story of friendship. I'm biased as I loved them then and now. Feel good book for a Car or Lazy Sunday. I had to get my BOY socks and Hyper Hyper Hat on to listen to it!

Doesn’t really delve into the music

I found it interesting that this memoir really is a story of what happened to Sara and Keren around their music rather than about their music. There were passing mentions to most of their albums and occasionally some insight was given into the songwriting and recording process for certain songs. This autobiography, however, is really more about the clubs that the two (and sometimes, three) of them frequented while on tour or promotion trips and the celebrities they met. Essentially, most of their experiences can be summed up simply as they had met someone famous, had a drink with them and then danced in clubs into the early hours of the morning.

Those hoping for deep insight into the songwriting process or how the group lost their third member on both occasions (Siobhan in early 1988 and her replacement Jacquie in 1991) will be somewhat disappointed since both were only briefly touched on. Additionally, those interested in finding out more about Bananrama’s most consistently successful period (the Stock Aitken Waterman years) will be sorely disappointed. Put simply, there isn’t a whole lot Sara and Karen had to say about the recording and songwriting process.

The history of one of the world’s most successful and long-standing girl groups is not really the focus of this story. This is very much a story about Sara and Keren’s deep friendship, a friendship that underpins Bananarama and also transcends it. This is a somewhat interesting read/listen to hear the life perspectives of two women who have been in the music business for so long (an impressive feat in and of itself) and their friendship that - much like their music career - has withstood the test of time.
