Publisher's summary

Rule Breaker. Troublemaker. Heart Taker.

Needs him like oxygen.

Dany has so many secrets. He’s not on the island by accident, he’s not a nice guy, and he’s using a fake name. He's laying low, but he must have been born under a bad sign, because the very man he’s hiding from walks back into his life.

A new life in a new town seemed like the right decision for Soren. Discovering Dany living on Piedras brings back all the feelings he's tried to forget.

Too bad Dany is just as compelling as he ever was.

Two men from opposite sides of the law: Can they set aside their differences and trust their hearts?

Real Trouble is set in the Veiled Intentions world. Soren and Dany first appear in the Shielded Hearts series (When It Rains). Real Trouble can be listened to as a stand-alone, is dual-POV following our heroes as they fight their way to their HEA, and is the first in the new West Coast Forensics series.

Sweet opposites attract!

This was a sweet and steamy opposites attract romance!

I absolutely loved the setting of the story.

The characters were likeable and well fleshed out.

Michael Dean performed an amazing audio delivery and narration

Good story. Good narration.

Elle Keaton's storytelling gets better with every book. The world being built from some of her earlier book series is becoming rich and complex. I find myself wanting to go back and reread earlier series like the Shielded Hearts AKA Accidental Roots series so that I can catch glimpses of the origins of characters in this new series. It isn't necessary to understand what is happening in this book, but it is will certainly add some interesting tidbits.

This book was a little steamier than the books in the Veiled Intentions series, but it suited the dynamic between and Soren.

The narration was pretty good, but the pronunciation of Skagit made me cringe. That's not how the locals pronounce it.... Sigh. Aside from that name I did enjoy Michael Dean's performance, and I downloaded the next book right away.

Great Story

I enjoyed this story very much, both the romance and the crime aspects. Elle Keaton is one of my favorite authors. I only wish Michael Dean had more distinctive voices for each of the MC’s, however, that didn’t detract from my enjoyment of this audiobook.

Second chances

A wonderfully written and brilliantly narrated second chance story. Danny and Soren are great characters who have a past together but each escaped to start a new life. Little did they expect to run into one another again and have their chemistry be just as explosive if not more than before. As murder and mystery unfold, they find themselves drawn to one another more and more. I really enjoyed the balance between the murder/mystery and the romance aspect of the story and especially enjoyed watching these two characters come together and seeing their feelings evolve and finally being able to express them. The narrator did a spectacular job with the story and with the characters and truly made the whole experience more enjoyable. I voluntarily reviewed a gift a copy of this audiobook.

Fabulous performance and story

I was given a free audio copy from the author and the GRR arc team for review.

This is a spinoff from the Veiled Intentions series but can be read as a standalone. I loved the other series and had rated it 5 stars also but I liked this one even more. Even though this book is still murder mystery focused like the other series was, this couple was steamier than the couple in Veiled Intentions. You definitely don't have to wait long to feel the sparks flying between these 2. They had fantastic chemistry and there were plenty of steamy scenes. I thought that the story was well written and it definitely kept my interest from start to finish. I would definitely recommend this. I can't wait for more.

Michael Dean is one of my favorite Narrators and this was no exception. He brought the story to life. He expressed all the emotions so well and did all the characters voices. It was a pleasure to listen to.

Dany and Soren's Second Chance at Love

Soren and Dany try for a second chance at love in the first book of spin-off series ‘West Coast Forensics’. ‘Real Trouble’ certainly stands alone, but I’m of the opinion that readers get a fuller picture of the plot after reading the ‘Veiled Intentions’ (Harmarson & Dempsey) 3-book series.

Dany and Soren have a past that is revealed throughout the book. After finding out their backstory, I wasn’t quite sure the emotional depth of their feelings at the start of the book were warranted. I will say this though--the sexual chemistry Elle Keaton portrays with these guys is off the charts. The steamy scenes are completely appropriate to Soren and Dany’s characterizations. Keaton pushes hard at one of my sexy times buttons by delivering a gloriously well-written switching scene.

I like the mystery that unfolds in this book. Some of it harkens back to the ‘Veiled Intentions’ series, but is, in and of itself, a self-contained mystery with some good moments of suspense.

Michael Dean delivers a great voice-acting performance. It's a well-suited interpretation of this romantic suspense story.

This review reflects a few of my voluntary opinions of this audiobook that I received after I requested an ARC of it.

Recommended.

Unintentionally hilarious sex scenes

I wanted to like this book, but the problem was, the writing just isn't very good. It sounds like a first draft. There were a lot of clumsy word choices and jarring sentence structures. And the author took the mystery out by continually telling us, via the characters internal monologue, what they thought would happen next, which happened exactly as expected. Stop telling, and show us! The worst thing about this book was the dialogue during the sex scenes. It was so clunky and cringy I laughed every time. I won't be trying any other books by this author.

It's good to be back on Piedras Island

After finishing the Hamarsson & Dempsey books I was craving for more. Not just more of scorching hot couples, but also more of the unique characters that populate Piedras,
With Matt and Niall away on a well-deserved vacation, the island is left in the capable hands of Birdy and the newcomer Soren. They have to deal with a new murder case and new cases of arson. Soren wants to find his HEA with a mysterious new resident of the island while proving to his new bosses that he is the right man for the job. It might be complicated when the person he is interested in, just happens to get mixed up in the new mess they are trying to untangle.
While the book can be read as a standalone, I would definitely recommend reading the Veiled intentions series (the events in Real Trouble happen shortly after the end of book 3) to better enjoy the story, and understand the dynamic between the characters (both residents of Piedras and employees of West Coast Forensics).

Good book!

Story: A very interesting opening to a new series! I must admit I waited anxiously for this title and I really enjoyed it! There are references to other titles by Elle Keaton, but it stands alone very well.
Both MCs were really fun to get to know and the overall story got me hooked on the book from the start.
If you like Elle Keaton's style, this one is a must read!
Narration: Great performance. I liked the voice and the easy to follow performance.

The Deputy and the Chef heat things up

I was eager to dive into this spin-off series and it did not disappoint with lots going on from Murder to Arson and Kidnapping to boot. Elle Keaton mixes her new characters well with the existing ones from the previous series. Michael Dean does a good job of bringing this collective of residents and visitors to life. Deputy Sorenson and his Dany have an interesting past together...can they leave it behind and find their HEA? Highly recommended MM Contemporary Action-Adventure Romance.

A second chance at redemption!

What are the odds Dany and Soren end up in the same town? They have a past, where Dany ran from as Soren hurt. When they meet again, there’s a crime where Dany might be involved. Their chemistry is still there, hotter than ever. There’s suspense and romance, well blended in this story. Great characters and a smart plot make for an interesting listen, with an awesome narrator. Totally recommend it.

Great mix of romance and crime

This is a wonderful start to a new series. It mixes romance with crime in perfect proportions. Soren and Dany have a complicated history with each other and as individuals so when they meet again, that alone would be enough to build a compelling story around. Keaton, however, adds in murder and other crimes, with plenty of suspects (one too close to home) and handles this aspect of the story deftly. It works perfectly alone and meshes with the romance seamlessly. Michael Dean captures the characters' complexities well and never goes overboard in the suspenseful passages. A very satisfying performance that brings the book to life.

Great start to a new series

I haven’t read all of Elle Keaton’s backlist, so I wasn’t familiar with Soren and Danny before I began this book. But I have to say, I fell in love quickly. I empathized with Danny’s desire to walk away from his old life – especially his family name. And then to feel like people were judging him because of that association even though it’s long in the past.

Soren also wanted a fresh start. Away from the memories – most especially of the man he’s never forgotten. When he sees Danny on Piedras Island, to say he’s shocked would be an understatement.

Anyway… Usually it’s dead bodies turning up on Piedras but this time it’s arson. Fires are abounding and it’s up to Deputy Soren to figure out what’s going on. Danny’s caught up, but he’s not really a suspect – at least to Soren. Danny might’ve run in the past, but it’s obvious he’s trying to set down roots and lighting fires to his places of employment isn’t going to help him. I love that Danny’s tried to make himself better by studying to be a chef and how he wants to make the local hotel’s menu into something special. Cue Cody, the manager, from the last book. I have high hopes he’s going to get an HEA one of these days. Plus it seems Ryder and Shay are in each other’s spheres again. Romance anyone?

The mystery kept me guessing and I enjoyed the story. I can’t wait for the next instalment in the series. And, of course, I have to mention Michael Dean. He’s the perfect narrator for this series and I just adore him. Can’t wait for the next book.

Return to Piedras

I absolutely loved this story and the chance to return to Piedras Island. While Mat and Niall are on their well-deserved honeymoon, life on the island carries on...and so do the mysteries, murder, and mayhem. And fires. I swear Piedras must be in the firebugs travel guide! This time, we are focused on new deputy Soren and his old lover, and scion of the notorious criminal family, Dany. There are more murders and mysteries, a few red herrings, and a number of twists and surprises. Oh, and a lot of scorching hot sex. Very enjoyable mix of mystery, drama, and second chance love. This is the first book in a new spin-off series, and I can't wait for more.

The narration by Michael Dean is fantastic with distinct voices/accents for each character and well-voiced emotional scenes and drama. All around excellent.

Mayhem, Mystery and Murder Return to the Island.

MM, Mystery, Suspense, Second Chance Romance, A dramatic return to the Island I first listened/read about in the Veiled Intentions Series. Fantastic intense story with lots of twists and turns and a plot that keeps you guessing throughout. Soren and Danny didn't expect to see each other again let alone in such circumstances, there is lots of tension between them and suspicion points to Danny being involved in the latest crime wave. Really enjoyed their story and Michael Dean yet again did a great job narrating.

Satisfying mystery, second chances romance

Danylo Peters has come to Piedras Island to live down his infamous crime family name of Petyr. He’s found work as a chef and made friends. He doesn’t count on bumping into the new deputy sheriff and still-angry ex-boyfriend Soren Jorgensen. Soren feels let down by Dany and he knows he’s trouble, so why can’t he keep away? I recently finished the wonderful Veiled Intentions series also set on Piedras Island and had high hope for this spin off series. Whereas the Veiled Intentions series follows one couple and a bunch of more complex mysteries over three books, the West Coast Forensics series focuses on a different couple in each book. I enjoyed it but didn’t find it quite as satisfying. This is a second chances story and there was smoking chemistry but the rekindling was instantaneous so I felt like I was missing some crucial backstory cues about Dany and Soren’s previous time together and what attracted them to each other. The mystery was more satisfying and built in suspense over the book - I’m hoping there’ll be more to this plot line and it will carry on through this series. I’m not a huge fan of schmaltz and there was more than I enjoy, but others will like it. Michael Dean’s audio narration is a real draw card for me, I love his work!

Gripping!

So much chemistry, passion and suspense in one story, I couldn’t put it down.

I love Elle’s style of writing, interweaving hints throughout the story only to drop a bucket of paint to you in shock as the real ‘baddie’ is revealed! I thought I’d guess it multiple times but alas I was surprised at the final turn of advents.

A truely thrilling and suspenseful story with flaming chemistry between two bold characters. I know Elle’s series have interconnected links and I really want to go back and find where Soren and Dany cameo as I want more of their background! This is a great seemingly second chance romance with danger, passion and talking 😜 Such a great read!
