Publisher's Summary

The growing power in Sable’s words nearly changed the world. Until she was betrayed and silenced.

A year ago, on the land’s biggest stage, Sable’s voice nearly burned down the carefully constructed lies of the Kalesh Empire. Now, Sable’s skills are merely tools in High Prioress Vivaine’s desperate negotiations with the new Kalesh ambassador, who’s denounced Sable as a zabat. A rebel. A firestarter.

Sable would love nothing more than to burn down the empire. But with threats against her sisters looming, the acting troupe driven away, and no news of Reese for a year, she’s too chained and alone to even light a spark.

Meanwhile, the empire grows on the south like a disease and stretches its poisoned fingers even into the northern lands. Desperate to fight, Sable sends details about the Kalesh to the one ember of hope kindling in the north: a small, mysterious band of rebels. Vivaine hates the rebellion, though, and her spies have discovered their location - and that Sable is more deeply connected to them than she knows. Unless Sable turns her back on the rebellion and pledges loyalty to Vivaine, the prioress will reveal the rebel camp to the Kalesh.

But Vivaine should not be so rash, because the power of Sable’s voice is stirring again, the old coals being stoked into flames. And she’s ready to embrace the title of zabat.

The Keeper Origins trilogy and the Keeper Chronicles trilogy can be listened to in any order. They take place in the same world but are stand-alone books.

I just finished the book(which I pre-ordered) and am pining for more! My fears from the ending of Dragon's Reach were allayed upon finishing this Raven's Ruin. Again, wonderful storyline. I have yet to be disappointed with JA Andrews and cannot wait for the next book of the series to become available! Also, Kate Reading was once again a wonderful narrator and I cannot wait to hear more from her as well.

wonderful characters

The second book of this series is even better than the first. I have fallen in love with the writing style and the richness of the characters in this story. I have laughed out loud and cried and been brought from the lowest of lows to the best of highs. I cannot wait for the third book of this series and I hope she continues writing stories in this world, it feels so deep with history. especially if you include the keepers chronicles.

Story-Telling Perfection!

Once in a while when I’m listening to a story, a moment of revelation, or a crescendo of action moves me in such a way that I get a sudden wave of goosebumps or chills. Not all stories have this effect, of course. And even those that do rarely contain more than one such moment. Ravin’s Ruin had at least three of these for me. And to be honest, this one actually started a little slow for me. That was fine, because this is not my first time listening to something written by JA Andrews. I had hope. And I'm glad I did because this ended up being my favorite JA Andrews story to date!

I’ll keep this spoiler-free. The turning point in the story for me was when I learned the true nature of what Reese had been doing in the north and with whom. Something about this revelation pulled me the rest of the way into the story, hanging on every word. I felt Sable’s emotional connection to Reese and how this affected her. Speaking of evoking an emotional response, I think that was what was most striking about this book in particular. I was able to feel not only Sable’s emotions, but the emotions she projected onto others through such well-written dialogue, the speeches especially. The writing just seems so smooth and effortless, and Kate Reading's narration surely enhances this further. In addition to the major plot points and twists, I have to say the use of the Phoenix and the Kobalt in this story were also executed wonderfully, and in unique fashion. Both enhance the story without ever approaching deus ex machina status. I particularly enjoy the personality of the Kobalt!

I loved the Keeper Chronicles, and Dragon’s Reach, but I don’t think I felt so emotionally invested or connected to either of these stories as I did this one. This doesn’t happen often for me so kudos to JA Andrews for improving upon an already stellar start to a series. I can’t wait for Phoenix Rising!

Selfish is not self sacrificing

Sable is the most selfish character I’ve ever encountered all about her she gets good people killed & uses everyone else it’s rare I m unable to find anything redeaming in a character nothing redeaming in her

This reader never disappoints

Kate Reading did not write this book, but she just about made the book come alive with her rendition. Her innovative characterization of each of the people in the book, make it a story that you should want to read just to see what she did. However, this book could stand on its own, as a very good And well written fantasy. I love stories with different characters who have extremely different personalities. None of these people are the same and yet they are all human and have important lessons for us all to learn. I also like books with a moral, and this book is full of them all the way through it one character after another, the sister, who doesn’t want to be told what to do, the sister, who wants to live her life in peace, and share her own idea of goodness, the sister, who wants to take care of everyone, those are the three sisters that are the family, then there are the prioresses, the one who is greedy, the one who seeks power, and the one who just wants to be herself, Human with all her fears. It’s amazing, but thank you J A Andrews, for writing something that is different, but similar, and that is a fantasy with very good plot, twists and turns. There’s a hero, heroin, lots of bad people, and, of course, the Phoenix, she is fabulous! Read the book, if you don’t like it, audible, will allow you to return it, but give it a shot! It’s worth every minute of the read.

The Names, The Names, The Names!

It was so very hard for me to do the merry-go-round of names..I have no advice for an author who has such a vivid imagination. Yes, I know there were actors with different voices but that did not help those of us with ADHD. However I liked it enough to read another.

It Keeps Getting Better

I fell in love with the original trilogy of the Keeper Chronicles. So I dove straight into the Prequel series after finishing the first set, as I wasn’t ready to leave this world and the characters in it, but having now finished book 2 in the prequel series I honestly think it’s been the best one of the 5 so far.

I enjoyed every moment of the story, and it just kept getting better. It’s so engrossing and following Sable and her companions through their journey just keeps me wanting more.

I can’t recommend this series enough, and you should definitely go through them all! Hving read the original trilogy I’ve really enjoyed the call-backs and threads that tie them together.

I can’t wait for the next entry !

Good

while I did enjoy this book, the story was very transparent and didn't quite deliver the impact of her other books. Nothing was a shock. In fact I'm surprised the hours spent reading while the prioress slept didn't make a reappearance. I'm expecting it in the last book.

Wonderful characters

I love the Keeper Origins trilogy. It is set within a fantasy framework but the magic and derring-do, while driving the narrative forward, is second to the wonderful characters that populate the book. It is with the characters, for me, where the magic happens. The story revolves around the heroine, Sable, as she tries to free herself and her two sisters from their environment; an environment that shackles them to the slums where danger is just around the corner. In attempting this escape she moves on to a bigger stage, one where she is trying to break the bonds imposed by the country’s leaders on the whole populace and deal with the menace from a foreign empire.

The characters are well developed and while there is excitement and action there is also humour. You begin to love and believe in them; you care about them. It is wonderfully written.

It is a riveting read and I cannot wait to read the final book in the trilogy. I thoroughly recommend it. Go on enjoy them!
