Terrible narrator

Rather long winded story, ruined by excruciating narration. I almost gave up because of the narration.

I love a good Lisa Jewell but this was not for me

I am a huge fan of Lisa Jewell - loved "Watching You" and "Then She Was Gone" so much, "The Family Upstairs" was so well written but just the themes were so depressing although it was a cracking plot …. and the rest of them I tried but just could not get into. Almost as if someone different wrote them. And so it was with this one, I loved the writing style but just kept waiting for something to happen and it all just fell rather flat for me. I suppose I was hoping for a cracking thriller as I know Lisa Jewell has an amazing talent, but this was just much ado about nothing for me. Also not a huge fan of Imogen Church as she does tend to over egg a reading but find her fine at 1.25 speed where she cannot make a meal out of every single word. Having said that she is a great narrator compared to many- but just needs to pull it all back a bit and let the writing speak for itself and the story breath instead of just milking it for all it is worth as it makes everything just too exhausting. I have preordered "One Hit Wonder" and so hoping it will be the Lisa Jewell I love rather than the one I just fail to engage with.

Bit dull and slow moving

I brought this book not realizing that it was Lisa Jewell's first book and she has clearly moved on since then. Whilst it was well written it just had no substance and crawled along at a snails pace. Not really much else to say as Lisa has written so many much better books sine this.

The narration was SUPERB

Love Lisa Jewell’s books and have downloaded almost all of them now. This story was good-not perhaps quite as good as others I’ve read-but what made this book stand out for me was how the narrator brought it to life. I literally laughed out loud in my car at the voices of some of the characters in certain parts of the story due to how the narrator read it. I will be seeking out books read by Imogen Church now. Pleased I downloaded this audible book.

Great narration

I just needed a book to escape from the world with and this delivered. The story was a happy ending, the characters were people I identified with, but the narrating was what made the story for me.

Relatable to when I was younger

I loved this book, its basically a trip through someone's 20s and the trials and tribulations many people go through at this age! you feel sorry for characters that you probably shouldn't feel sorry for. cringeworthy moments that you feel like you're there watching 1st hand. funny romcom well worth a read!

Early Lisa Jewell

This was the first Jewell book I read, some 20+ years ago and I enjoyed it as a late teenager. However, having listened recently on audible I find it outdated and immature. Whilst I appreciate the book, it’s not a patch on Jewell’s later work of which I am a huge fan. Still enjoyable to a certain extent, it was a disappointing listen for me. But then at 41, I might not be the books target audience.

Funny story

Funny story twisting around the lives of a handful of people living in a small block of flats. Very entertaining.

Narrator hard to listen to

I found this book just, meh. I did not like the characters, and particularly disliked jem whom I found girly, fluffy, and insipid. They were flat and I really didn't care that much what happened to them. A bit all over the place. Much prefer LJs later work. The narration almost put me off altogether. Over acted , and the frequent very audible wet gulps the narrator kept taking was horrid.

Loved this.

Got off to a good start ( can't abide slow starts), plenty going on but not the fashionable overkill of far too many twists. Highly amusing in parts. Excellent characterisation by a superb narrator - best I've ever heard- she realistically bright the characters to life, some to hilarious effect.

Ralph’s party mmmm

This is a rather silly book. Long winded and a bit childish. It could have been edited a lot. The characters are entertaining though and I made myself finish it. I won’t be reading another Lisa Jewell novel again. One thing though I like Imogen church’s voice. She’s a good narrator.
