Just too religious

The author is an evangelical Christian. There's nothing wrong with that and if you're looking for a book by an evangelical for evangelicals, this is a great example. However, if you're really just interested in career advice, know that you're going to get a lot of religious talk in this book.

This book is for people who find it easy to quit

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I was hoping for a book that would give me the courage to "quit" and make a change. This is not that book. This book is written by a young man and I think the audience it touches is young men who have been moving from one job to another. I made it through about 2 hours and then skipped ahead and then gave up on it. Probably not the book for you if you are over 30.

Chinese Water Torture of a Book

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Say something other than 'don't quit your day job'

What was most disappointing about Jon Acuff’s story?

Don't quit your day job might be a sound message, but repeating it over and over and over and over and over and over ... When I got to the chapter where he goes through a list of all the things you can buy with money from your day job (you can pay your dental bills with money from your day job, you can buy shoes with money from your day job) I could not take it any longer and shut it off. I just imagined his editor making the 'stretch' hand-sign and sending him home with instructions to bring back a longer book. Several times.

What about Jon Acuff’s performance did you like?

He is enthusiastic.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Frustration - he does not seem to understand that I get it, and he just keeps repeating the same message over and over.

Any additional comments?

I have over 400 Audible books and this is the first one where I will be asking for my money back. It would have been a great message if it had been half an hour long. At almost 6 hours it's way, way too long.

you don't actually need to quit now

I just thought it was nice to not feel rushed to action rather than how and why I want to feel the way I do. some good lessons and small tid bits about faith and bringing it home. I don't like preachy books that even mention religion, but it was done so nicely, felt it was a compassionate book. made me appreciate what I have just a little more. just read :)

Worth the read!!

This is a great book with down-to-earth thinking on how to move from working at a job you hate to working at your dream job! Tons of valuable information and insights!

The reading of the book is very well done and I love the personal "off script" inserts throughout. I recommend this book to anyone who is willing to put in the work to pursue your dreams!

Style and Grace

I'd first met Jon while listening to Dave Ramsey podcasts.
I had originally purchased this book as part of a set and I shelved it.
I'm glad I did because it made me get this recording whose extra content alone was worth the price of admission.
This book is for people looking for a more fulfilling career whether that's where they are right now or where they want to be.
This book is most definitely worth your time

Not easy listening speechwise but useful

This book would have benefitted from a professional narrator. The author narrated it with enthusiasm, but his manner of speaking also quickly becomes annoying.
The core of the message is useful, and well explained. To me, there were a bit too many examples from his personal life that he didn't really need to explain what he was stating.

Great read for anyone.

I really liked his audio performance. Jon gives some good insight about following your dreams and they are all g pounded in sense! If you are just trying to figure out what that dream is or have been pursuing that dream for awhile in your off time, this book will help tremendously. Don't think you have a dream, then read this book and find one, because your life is probably in need.

Excellent

I read this book after the next book, when Acuff had already left his dream job and I loved them both. Most of the book, the author is working to convince you NOT to quit your job - until you're really ready. I enjoyed it.

I'm about to quit and I'll do it right with this book

If you ever considered quitting your job, this is book is the most comprehensive check list you should follow before quitting. He clearly exemplified each concept in order to guide through the better decision on how to safely quit your day job to move to something much better and not just "another job".

I don't have words, just listen to it.

So so so many golden nuggets and exactly what I needed right now. The chapter about falling in like with your job was worth the cost. If like me you dream of quitting to do something you love, stop and listen to this first.

A step to your awesome

Devoured this book! Jon is a brilliant narrator and had me laughing out loud in public so often that I'm now accustomed to getting strange looks from people on the train. Do yourself a favor and get this book and his others as well.
