Publisher's summary

When the F-14 Tomcat of the only female flier in Punk's training class rolls wildly during a hop, nearly causing a midair collision, Punk has trouble believing her claim that a malfunction in the cockpit was responsible. When a similar accident claims the life of one of his fellow trainers, Punk suspects a cover-up involving the use of faulty parts. But no sooner does he bring on the heat with his allegations that a far more important crisis calls Punk's squadron into active duty. This time, it is not a training drill...it's America's next war.

Just the thing if you’re an aviation fan and like a good story

It may be fictional but the author’s experience shows through in his writings. The story is a great follow-on to Punk’s War.

A good continuation of the story

Enjoyable. The newness has worn off, but the same interesting subject matter of carrier aviation and pilot culture continues. Definitely an “inside baseball” look at the loves of those who serve out country.

I appreciate the honest and sometimes painful recognition of the fact that sometimes things happen beyond your control and you have a choice to bury yourself in it or shake it off and carry on with your life.

I’ll be starting part three immediately.

A good idea what is like being a Navy pilot

Carol Ward goes into detail about the training of pilots, LSOs and ship life. Not make it combat flying. I found the book really interesting. This is good serious of books if you ever wanted to know what it is like to be a Naval Avatar.

Great novel

Great homage to the F-14, its history, and some of the social issues it was involved in back in the day.

Best one yet

A great new story of the F14 mixed with some fleet politics. Big thanks to those who have white knuckled their way to defend humanity from everything, including ourselves. I look forward to a future reread.

Realistic

I am an Aviator and Flight Instructor. This book did a great job taking a new pilot from the RAG to the fleet, with some emotional turns, and of course, the specter of 9-11.

This is a really offered view from the inside and I couldn’t have enjoyed it more.

Warm Carrol established himself as an outstanding author and story teller. I really liked the amount of detail and how well balanced the technical content is with the pace and flow of the story. I hope he will give us more.

Book 2 helps tell the entire story.

I liked it but I listened to Punks Fight first by mistake and that is the best book of the trilogy in my opinion. I see now a few things I did understand because of my error in order.
Sometimes it had too much detail and exact truth. I also wore the wrong shoes as a SWO when I got sent to a CVN for a month. I had to trade ball caps and patches to get a pair of steel toes boots.

Excellent, even the 2nd time through

No one writes about day to day naval air operations like ward Carroll. This is a must-read for anyone into carrier warfare

Another SHACK, smack on the nose.

It is a little disheartening to know that the battle for women in combat is still raging on within the military. Things have certainly improved since this book was written, at least.

This was an excellent read, full of technical details and beautifully painted scenes. Ward has terrific prose and great timing. As with the first book, a lot of this book is extra special for people in the military, like the rank dynamics or greasy tech reps. Things we've all had to deal with!

Bonus points for LANTIRN because that thing is just cool.
