Publisher's Summary

Cookie "Hunter" Knox was good at his job, infiltrating behind enemy lines was one of his specialties. His SEAL team relied on him to do his job, just as he relied on them to do theirs. Ever since two of his teammates found a woman that completed them, their dangerous Ops seemed a bit more intense. Cookie knew if he had a woman who belonged to him, he'd never let her go. Little did he know the SEAL team's latest mission to Mexico would change his life forever.

Fiona Storme resigned herself to the fact that it was highly unlikely she would make it out of the jungle alive. Kidnapped by human traffickers, abused, and without family or friends looking for her, Fiona knew wishing for rescue was as realistic as having a big, juicy hamburger fall from the sky. Unbeknownst to Fiona, the SEAL team, including Cookie, were on the way, but their assignment didn't consist of rescuing her.

Protecting Fiona is the 3rd book in the SEAL of Protection Series.

average series

ok this book started off with the formula and then broke away. The seal is in a situation and there was an opening for the chick to "save his life" and she takes it. She's super bad ass in the beginning and then her issues come out to play leaving her a mental damsel in distress and only her big bad SEAL can save her. THis book breaks the formula slightly because there is no danger or drama in the end to threaten the couple's relationship. Her issues are all in her head. She suffers from PTSD.

NOW the reason this book gets 2 stars is this. Our heroine was kidnapped and was kept in the jungles of Mexico. She was there for THREE MONTHS. I'm not spoiling anything since this information is given in like the first or second chapters. WHile in captivity with sex traders for 3mos she is 100% ABUSED. She immediately trusts (crap i can't remember which dude he is because there are so many freaking names in the book for each character so now i gotta go look it up.) Cookie and he totally jumps into insta-love with her. one week and a few days after her rescue they are doing some pretty heavy petting. All my mind kept screaming was THIS IS SUPPOSE TO BE A RAPE VICTIM!! WHY DO YOU THINK IT"S OK TO STRIP DOWN NEKKID AND CUDDLE WITH HER?!?! WHY ARE YOU ENCOURAGING HER TO GIVE YOU A HAND JOB!!! SHE"S A FREAKING RAPE VICTIM!!!

But as I said her issues came out in the end and they dealt with it. I'm hoping the next book breaks up this whole formula because if not i may not be able to go on.

I liked it, but...

This third book in the series is a tough read. The subject matter is deep and has loads of emotional impact. I enjoyed the story, but there we a few issues along the way.

A constant issue with this series is the lack of pronouns. Almost every paragraph starts with the character's name. It was a minor annoyance in the first two books, with this one it almost had me stopping. It has a weird feel and totally takes you out of the read. Especially when it is Cookie this and Cookie that and Cookie Cookie Cookie!

I really like Fiona and Cookie's dynamic, however, reality has to be suspended a bit. There are very serious issues that were ignored at first. I did like the way it was handled later, but it only had the last 1/4 of the book to delve into the real issues facing the relationship. The very real issues Fiona was facing were handled very well. You had a glimpse into the reality of PTSD. She knew it wasn't real and yet she did not.

Ugh, insta love is not the way to go!!! it just did not read as true. You felt it growing but they were not at "I love yous", more of a dependency on her part than anything. If the book had been longer and we had the PTSD earlier, things could have developed with a more natural feel. I wish we could have had more of the time that built up to the epilogue. That would have been the real meat of the story.

There was a bit of steam here, which was kind of rushed and felt awkward under the circumstances. I am talking about the heavy petting throughout the story not the epilogue. The epilogue was totally appropriate and allowed you to see where they are now.

I felt the author went too far in making the senator's daughter a spoiled brat. I get it was to show a contrast, but it was not realistic. I can not believe anybody who was in that situation and victimized as she was would act as she did. It made her beyond unlikable and hurt the integrity of the story.

I have been reading this series in a little marathon, so my memory of characters from the first books is still fresh. Caroline seems to have had a full personality overhaul. She is now brash, loud and apparently stunning. Big changes from the average timid chemist we know her as from her story. Maybe being kidnapped and tortured turns you into an extrovert? Maybe she needed reconstructive surgery from the beating and now she is gorgeous? Or maybe this is how the author wishes she had written her? What ever the case, the inconsistencies make me dislike her. I liked the quiet strength she had in her book. Too bad she didn't keep herself.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Stella Bloom, who has a really enjoyable read. I like her voice and the emotion she shows with her tone. Her voices are varied, only a couple consistency issues her and there. The pace of the read is kind of slow, I needed to punch it up to double speed to accommodate my fast ears. She is a newer narrator to me, and I am interested in hearing more of her reads in the future.

All that griping and complaining makes it sound like I did not like the book. I did enjoy it, just saw some many places where it could have been better. I still want to see where the other SEALs romances happen and hope Tex is included in the ranks. He steals a piece of your heart with his actions in this book.

*** I hope this review was useful to you and helped your decision to read or not read this book. I love reading and sharing my opinions with other readers. I listen at double speed; all my impressions of the narration are from that setting. Thanks for taking the time to read my review! Loved the story/

This is a powerful story about being caught up in the sex slave trade, the rescue, and the aftermath. It is fiction but keep the tissues handy. The story is well written and find that I attached myself to the characters quickly. The performance was excellent.

Fiona and Cookie

After Caroline, Fiona's story is my next favorite.

I've listened to the audio version more than once. I'd love to see Stoker's stories on the big screen.

You may want to seek out Julie's book after reading Fiona. Julie is a Kindle World book and not available on audible.

A Hero Meets His Match

What made the experience of listening to Protecting Fiona the most enjoyable?

It's a wonderful romantic suspense novel with a nice twist on the old "damsel in distress" plot. Fiona is a strong, courageous woman who earns the hero's respect before he falls in love. They make a great pair.

What other book might you compare Protecting Fiona to and why?

Ms. Stoker's other books in the series all have women who are in jeopardy and yet face it with bravery, intelligence, and strength. These are no pussycats, they're strong women who meet equally strong men.

Which scene was your favorite?

The first part of the book where the hero rescues the heroine from a horrible situation and grows increasingly impressed by her courage was really compelling. It's so nice to have a female lead with such strength.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reaction, but I was really impressed by the author's writing style and with the powerful situations explored in the plot.

Any additional comments?

Oh yeah, and the sex scenes are great. As are all of her books.

Disappointed

What would have made Protecting Fiona better?

I felt like Cookie was so overpowering. He declared Fiona "mine" so many times I was starting to wonder whether he would eventually isolate her and then abuse her. Furthermore, I don't mind when characters are meek or lonely, but I had a hard time imagining a woman could be so repulsive, shy, weird, or whatever, that she would go on vacation alone and not a soul on earth would look for her.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I will continue the series because the first few were better and I liked her other series.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Stella Bloom?

Yes

What character would you cut from Protecting Fiona?

No one. I would improve Fiona and Cookie.

Started out well, then made a hard left into Sweet Vally High territory

This started out full of action and intrigue. Big bad Seal going in for the rescue. Exciting! I did find it curious that Cookie was doing the rescue all by himself with team members no where nearby but whatevs, it’s fiction, I’ll suspend my disbelief. After the action and the damsel in distress is rescued that’s when the book suddenly went right to high school drama with a side of really unbelievable sex involving a victim that’s been kidnapped and beaten and raped! Um yeah I’m sorry but no. Has the author even bothered to research victims of sexual assault? I seriously doubt that she’d be “oh yeah, let’s mess around! I’ve only been back in civilization for 5 days but your love for me has healed my soul as well as the bullet I took for you in my leg and let’s not forget the steel collar I was wearing around my neck for the last 3 months that’s dug into my skin making me bleed on a daily basis!” Suddenly, all the description about her emaciated body, and the track marks on her arms from her kidnappers forcibly drugging her just to name a few of her injuries, were never spoken of again. In fact, girlfriends of the other Seal team members were like “Ohmygawd!” *in a 16 yr old California girl voice* “We love that you’re the new better half to Cookie! Let’s totes go shopping and spend all your new man’s money!” I’m not even exaggerating that’s exactly what happened. Oh, and what do they do when their boyfriends go to work? They hang out with each other, do more shopping or whatever, waiting for their men to come home! No mention of a job or career or even hobbies that aren’t shopping! Was there time travel in this novel and I just missed it? Does the author long for the 50’s where women are defined by their men? I was thoroughly disgusted and disappointed that I couldn’t even finish it. I stopped with an hour left.

3.5 stars!

I love a strong protective hero who comes and saves the day for the heroine. This series seems to follow this formula perfectly. I would also warn that the things the heroines go through are pretty dramatic and might bother readers with triggers.

One of the things I like about the heroines are they are pretty tough in character. They are abused but handle it well and don't want to bother or inconvenience anyone. It can be a little too much with how much they are in self-sacrificing at times.

I felt bad for Fiona's recovery and how badly she was affected by her kidnapping. While it was more realistic, it also ended this particular book on a less fun way. However it does show what a great hero Hunter was as he stuck by her side.

Sad and Amazing at the same time

Rescuing a hostage, Cookie Knox discovers another woman has been held in the same place as their hostage. Fiona is a survivor. The story that follows is one of love, heartache and courage. The struggles that Fiona goes through, and the love and support shin by the SEAL team and their loves is wonderful! Another beautiful story from Susan Stoker.

Strong start then gets lame!!<br />

Possible spoilers ahead!

I felt the start of this book was very good and introduced the characters really well.

Allowing us to get to know a strong, independent women name Fiona.

It started going down hill when the writer rushes to make the relationship between the two main charactors sexual. When this happens I feel that Fiona allows Cookie to take away her strenght and independence.

I had to laugh when Cookie kept explaining how he would never rush Fiona into a sexual relationship... however then proceeded to almost force himself on her the same night! Expressing how he just NEEDED to feel her touch!

The names of the charactors are stupid and not needed. Also if i hear the phrase "my women" again, I am gonna be sick!
