What did you like best about this story?

Seems more realistic even with the fantasy

hard to get into but once in it's great,

Before you read any further, The First Law Trilogy, A Song of Ice And Fire, Kingkiller Chronicles are among my favorite fantasy novels. So I do like grim and dark. This one is not bad and t world building is nice. However the characters are not fleshed out and the story relied on too much deus ex machina to my taste. Also the fact that this young man's exceptional talents don't seem believable (to me that is).

There is a certain dryness to the prose exacerbated by the reader.

All in all the style may work for you but approach with caution.

Not Really For Me

Some vague spoilers included- An okay story, if you are interested in main characters without many redeeming qualities. It was purposeful but some more true internal struggle would have added a lot. The story had an abrupt end and needed more depth and character development. When it ended I was left wondering if I had missed a portion. It felt like a lot of set up for a next book. The story had a lot of back and forth travel, different themes, and potential future story lines that all could have been utilized and organized better. The reading was good but a bit melodramatic at times.

Good things first: the author's prose is just top notch. Succinct and clear, great imagry when it's needed, realistic action scenes.

For me first person fantasy doesn't work for 2 reasons: first you know the mc survived in some fashion to tell the story so all his conflict is already spoiled. Next, it tends to give tge mc an inflated ego.

I can get behind an antihero but not this guy. I was never sold on how a preteen would have the mental tenacity nor cleverness nor worldly skillset to take over a gang, plot, lead, etc. Even learning what motivated him just... didn't work for me and anyone who accepts rape as just another way to spend the evening is not redeemable for this reader.

good luck. I love this guy's red sister stuff!

Tough to get behind the mc
