Publisher's summary

How can we trust God in the dark?

Framed around the nighttime prayer of Compline, Tish Harrison Warren, author of Liturgy of the Ordinary, explores themes of human vulnerability, suffering, and God's seeming absence. When she navigated a time of doubt and loss, the prayer was grounding for her. She writes: "It was this practice that gave me words for my anxiety and grief and allowed me to reencounter doctrines of the church - the church's claims about reality - not as rational, tidy little antidotes for pain but as a light in darkness, as good news." Where do we find comfort when we lie awake worrying or weeping in the night? This book offers a prayerful and frank approach to the difficulties in our ordinary lives at work, at home, and in a world filled with uncertainty.

Loved it.

Warren's way of bringing theology and an understanding of church and faith ritual into the everyday is really useful to me. What does faith look like and how can it be maintained not only in the thick of things but drowning in the mundane aspects of life especially when there is no end in sight for your pain? Where do we find grace in scripture and in the church and how do we as individuals and as the church meet those in their suffering?

As someone who sometimes finds it difficult to have a relationship with and see the heart in ritualistic prayer, Warren's explanation of and own love for it gives me a new appreciation for it.

After owning Warren's first book in paperback, audible, and kindle form, I pre-ordered this book without hesitation. And I am glad I did.

Zimmerman's narration is also great. I have looked for and listened to other books she has narrated before as well.

I will definitely listen to this again.

Amazing and insightful

I was aware of the Compline but had never used it regularly as a spiritual practice. Tish's excellent walk through along with her compelling story all in her own voice makes this a must listen.

This book is a must read

It soothes the souls and more importantly points i to our back to a good loving and compassionate father who is acquainted with our sufferings and who continues to invite us into His comfort. Tish has such a gorgeous way of communicating all of this through her own personal stories and experiences. Her writing is a gift.

Helps to answer the big WHY. Why evil and pain?

She takes a deep dive into how to cope with the hard times in life, which we all experience in one degree or another. Very insightful. Hopeful. Peaceful.

Excellent!

This is a beautiful mediation on the Keep Watch prayer in the BCP. Very helpful as we wrestle with the fact of suffering and the reality of a good and present God.

Beautiful, real, true

This was one of the best books I’ve encountered addressing faith and the messy grief/pain of life. I believe this is one I’ll come back to time and time again because it was packed with honest discussion that I took so much away from. Highly recommend.

Much to consider

Well written. I am reassured as some of the writer’s concerns are mine as well. Am I good enough? Am I faithful enough?

Poignant & relatable on so many levels.

I kept wanting to say "yes, yes, me too!" Thank you for sharing such raw moments & feelings which are perhaps what makes your journey through the wilderness paths of life, & the hope God provided credible & tangible.
The reader's voice was easy to listen to & presented as if directly from the author.
Highly recommend to anyone who's journeyed through grief & suffering as well as those who will journey through..... as we all will at some time in life.

Possibly the most powerful book on prayer that I have ever come across

I listened to this on the recommendation of a friend who had just finished reading it. I have been a Christian for a very long time, yet I think this is possibly the most powerful book on prayer that I have encountered. Deeply reflective, straightforward theological teaching, accessible and practical and at times ‘laugh out loud’ funny, I will be going bacK to it again soon to further digest its wisdom. And will begin praying this Compline prayer regularly!

This was gold.

Authentic. Deeply Biblical. Read this during a storm or if you want to support people going through a storm.
