A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Melville Heights is one of the nicest neighborhoods in Bristol, England. It’s the sort of place where doctors and lawyers and old-money academics live. It’s not the sort of place where people get stabbed in the back 30 times with a kitchen knife in their own homes. Someone must have seen something. Newlywed Joey Mullen, for example, recently returned from four years of working in Ibiza. She and her husband, Alfie, are eager to find a place of their own in her hometown. But Joey finds herself distracted by the man next door, Tom Fitzwilliam.

Cute
I was give this book for free. Cute story. Fast paced. I thought that would be more magical description. I enjoyed the crime solving and the quirky characters. The narrator seemed distracted as she read the story with gaps and pauses I the wrong spots. so the flow of the sentences was just not right.

Cute quick story
Thought the story was cute and a quick listen, enjoyed the tale in all. The plot was good with some twists and turns along the way. I do wish the book had been longer and had more time to get to know the characters.
Having the author stop to request reviews twice during the story was distracting.

Great Story
Very cute story! I enjoyed the paranormal aspect of this cozy mystery. Two things bothered me, though. First, the narrator paused in the weirdest places. It was quite distracting from the story. It reminded me of when children had to read aloud in class. Second, the book is interrupted several times with an appeal for reviews. Again, very distracting!

it felt like there were too many characters in such a short story making it a bit hard to follow at times. the story itself was good but I found the narration a bit hard to listen to and had to turn it down to lose the whistly speech. I thought the narration was quite monotone which didn't help.

Cute story, but the narration needs more flow
The narrator has a young voice, which is fitting for the genre. But she paused at the wrong moments. The whole time.
Example: “Are you not going to let her out now?”
was read as: “Are you not going? …[BIIIG PAUSE and you’re already thinking, where is he not going?]… To let her out now?”
With almost every sentence she put in a pause at the wrong moment. That made it so hard to follow at times. I’m sorry, I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, but it distracted from the story. It needs to flow more. It would have given me better enjoyment if the narrator would have paused less, only at commas and full stops, you know, more naturel. Please take this as constructive criticism and learn from it. If she learns to let her sentences flow, she could be a good narrator! I’m so sorry to have to do this, but my stars for performance can’t be any higher than 2.
The story itself was cute. When a body is found and Lola’s best friend, a mermaid, is the main suspect, Lola starts her own investigation, together with detective Derek. Nawfar tries to run away, making everyone suspect her even more. Lola needs to clear her name. A light-hearted, fun story. A short book, with a clever mystery, and quirky characters. I really liked it. The story on its own is 4 stars. That makes the overall score a 3.
The book was interrupted twice for a plea for a review. The book isn’t long (1h 19m) and the first plea took a minute and a half, which was a bit too long for my taste, the second I didn’t time, but at that point I got annoyed. I had never heard that before in an audio book, but I do understand because reviews are so important. Once is understandable, twice is just annoying and repetitive.

Magic commotions
This is a fun, easy to listen to cozy mystery. I have listened to a lot of audio books and I have never been asked to leave a review while in the middle of the story. So found this very strange, also with such a short story why ask us twice? I think the author might need to think about leaving that until the end in the next book. Other than that it was a good listen. I liked the characters but wish the story had been longer so we could learn more about them. The plot was good and liked how you thought it was going in one direction but with the clues you puzzle it along with the detective.
Lola New potion shop is up and running smoothly. So much so that when asked out on a date by detective Dereck she says yes. With so many magical beings attending the Spring welcome event it is not long before feathers get ruffled and a body is found. But who would want to kill a merman? When all eyes turn to Nawfar, Lola's best friend who had just had a argument with the victim, Lola knows she will have to get involved to save her friend. Can she question shy mermaids and grumpy trolls to get to the bottom of the murder?
I liked the narrator, especially the voice she used for Pim-Pim an elderly man-fairy.
If you like the cover art for the book , then that is exactly what you get with this story a fun, light, fantasy, mystery this is just right if you have a short car journey to go on.
I received a free review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
