Research into how we learn has opened the door for utilizing cognitive theory to facilitate better student learning. But that's easier said than done. Many books about cognitive theory introduce radical but impractical theories, failing to make the connection to the classroom. In Small Teaching, James Lang presents a strategy for improving student learning with a series of modest but powerful changes that make a big difference - many of which can be put into practice in a single class period.

Boils down to "be a joy detective."
This audiobook is aimed at improving the morale and outlook of us tired, overworked, ill-compensated, mistreated, and publicly shamed teachers. This is my 22nd year as a public school teacher. I've seen everything, every type of student, every type of parent, every type of administrator, and similarly every type of colleague. Having just finished this audiobook last week, and putting some ideas into practice, I don't feel that it really changes anything. The narrator does a good job, audio is clear. Yet, I found the overall content of this volume lacking. That is, after finishing it and putting ideas to practice, I honestly do not think anything will change professionally for me. Maybe I already have a positive mindset. I just don't feel that this text really does much for improving morale or outlook for us public school teachers.

This book brought happiness back to my teaching - for myself and my students. I kept thinking, "she must have worked in my school!" The author's understanding of teacher life is spot on. I have shared this book with my colleagues and we have begun a book study with it this year. I would recommend it to anyone whose love for teaching has been dimmed by politics and administration.

Excellent message about being positive
The tasks in the book are practical and worthwhile. It might be ironic for me to say that the narrator sounded too positive... on the verge of saccharin. This might be cultural, as I am not from the USA. Despite this, I did listen to the whole book and have started to put elements of the philosophy into practice.

Positive mindset for life!
Teachers are amazing people who need our love and support. We teachers need to love ourselves and this book shows, no implores teachers to develop their positive mindset. This book reminded me of something I used as a mum before teaching- a mother is a either a thermometer or a thermostat in the family. So are teachers. Thermostats regulate the temperature (atmosphere) while a thermometer merely reads the temperature.
Thanks for reminding me!
