Publisher's summary

Years before the Whispering War, there was a girl named Olivia. Her family murdered, her home destroyed -- a darkness she can't control. Olivia has never quite fit in amongst the lords and ladies of the seas... but things are about to get worse. Forced into the service of a powerful enemy, she must use her gifts to kill. The darkness grows fiercer with every step; each murder drags her closer to edge of villainy. Only one force in the Kingdom might have the power to save her, but she knows it's too late. Olivia has already fallen to the darkness -- into the jaws of a monster she calls The Poison.

No sequel

I like the short novella. I was hoping the Forsaken books would pickup where this one left off - it doesn't. Very disappointing. I don't understand why this is called a prequel, it doesn't even have any of the same characters & completely different story line. Basically no correlation.

Entertaining prequel

I found this book by searching the narrator, Derek Perkins. I thought he did a great job with the Sovereign of the Seven Isles books by David Wells and I wanted to try more. The fact that this was a free novella was a bug bonus. The story was short, entertaining, and we'll written. I look forward to Shae Ford's Harbinger, book 1 of The Fate's Forsaken series.

Poison hmmmm..

I will definitely go on to the next in the series and not because I think Poison was terrific more so to see where this series is going. This was a short story and more of a start of something and I need to see where it goes.

NOTHING HE DID WAS WITHOUT PURPOSE

THERE ARE FAR WORSE THINGS THEN BEING A BIT SIMPLE
It took me a little while to get into this. The more I got to understand this world and Olivia the more I enjoyed it. I love a strong Sexy Female character. Though I could not give this five stars, I was intrigued enough to give the series a try. Many books seem to have a character of their own and put me into a different mood. This book put me in the same mood, I had when I read Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. I am not sure why. Olivia is not exactly a lovable character, but most certainly a interesting one.

A Taste of the Fates Forsaken World

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would definitely recommend this book series to any fantasy lover. Poison gives you an opening into the Fates Forsaken series, and if you are already a FF reader then it answers some interesting questions.

What other book might you compare Poison to and why?

This novella, like the series, is fast paced. You don't have days of "collecting firewood", "saddling horses", or "shopping for supplies". I also like that it doesn't contain material that is offensive, making it suitable for all audiences. Books that rely on the craft of writing and aren't filled with useless trash become the classic go to books for years and generations. I think it has more of the FEEL of a Terry Brooks, Lloyd Alexander, J.R.R. Tolkien, or Garth Nix book series.

Any additional comments?

If you are looking for a quality Fantasy series, give this book a try. It will give you an idea of the writer's style but remember there is a whole Fates Forsaken world out there filled with a lot of characters and personality types. D'Mere and Garron are just a couple of the character types in the Fates Forsaken series. Pirates, Shape-changers, Whisperers, Mots, Giants, this series has them all!

Not enough detail to make a decision...

About whether or not to purchas the books in the series. The narrator is excellent! He's the same narrator that narrated The Godling Chronicles, which is a series worth a credit (see my review there).. If your looking for a series about poison, intrigue, and magic get The Farseer Trilogy. The narrator in that series starts out pretty bad, so listen at 1.25x and you'll get through them and love them.

not liking the female lead's character...

although the book is written well enough, i guess i just don't care for the overall theme of the book. i'd rather listen to something a bit more uplifting and less dark. as a prequel it almost ended my interest in the series, but i went ahead and bought the 1st book and am enjoying it quite a lot.
the narrator is good, although some of the people sound a bit alike, but that didn't detract from the overall story.

Great backstory!

In a literary world filled with Villains, you think you know them...but do you really?
