CELEBRATING THE 20th ANNIVERSARY WITH A NEW FOREWORD BY THE AUTHOR

Wounded in the line of duty, NYPD homicide detective John Corey convalesces in the Long Island township of Southold, home to farmers, fishermen -- and at least one killer. Tom and Judy Gordon, a young, attractive couple Corey knows, have been found on their patio, each with a bullet in the head. The local police chief, Sylvester Maxwell, wants Corey's big-city expertise, but Maxwell gets more than he bargained for.

John Corey doesn't like mysteries, which is why he likes to solve them. His investigations lead him into the lore, legends, and ancient secrets of northern Long Island -- more deadly and more dangerous than he could ever have imagined. During his journey of discovery, he meets two remarkable women, Detective Beth Penrose and Mayflower descendant Emma Whitestone, both of whom change his life irrevocably. Ultimately, through his understanding of the murders, John Corey comes to understand himself.

Fast-paced and atmospheric, marked by entrancing characters, incandescent storytelling, and brilliant comic touches, Plum Island is Nelson DeMille at his thrill-inducing best.

Thoroughly enjoyed the story, kept my interest, I like the character Nelson created ,he’s funny, playful and always putting the pieces together.
Scott Brick narrating is very good as well.

This book’s strengths reside mostly in the dialogue and humor, but it still needed some editing. It could’ve been a lot shorter. I enjoyed the asshole main character, but arguably he gets a little over the top and one dimensional. And there are some really lazy descriptions and sentences. Like ending a sentence with “or something like that” happened way too many times. That’s kind of English comp 101 stuff…. Again, where was the editor? But all that said, it’s got some strengths and I appreciated the overall hardboiled noir tradition enough to make exceptions and enjoy the book.

Entertaining, needs editing

I have been checking Audible for months hoping for Plum Island to be available. Yesterday my prayers were answered and I was happily listening to the original John Corey detective story, the first of five Demille books featuring this entertaining and amazing character, within 10 minutes. Scott Brick is John Corey. Plum Island is engaging and a great listen.

Vintage John Corey at last

Scott Brick does it again! The book is pretty good, but his performance of agent John Corey is superb. Great way to get the series going.

Would you consider the audio edition of Plum Island to be better than the print version?

No, but it's close

Who was your favorite character and why?

John. He's a sexist brat, but he is smart, clever and outwits the bad guys.

Have you listened to any of Scott Brick’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. This is one of his best.

Any additional comments?

This story has it all: complex plot, mystery, red herrings, interesting characters, snappy dialogue (DeMille is a master of dialogue), action, humor, and sort-of romance. I have read it numerous times and will listen to it again. This novel really is brilliant.
