Publisher's summary

The second in the terrifying DI Callanach crime series.

In the midst of a rock festival, a charity worker is sliced across the stomach. He dies minutes later. In a crowd of thousands, no one saw his attacker. The following week, the body of a primary school teacher is found in a Dumpster in an Edinburgh alley, strangled with her own woolen scarf.

DI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach have no motive and no leads - until around the city, graffitied on buildings, words appear describing each victim.

It's only when they realise the words are appearing before rather than after the murders that they understand the killer is announcing his next victim...and the more innocent the better.

Critic reviews

"Must read! With nail-biting twists at every turn, [Perfect Remains] will have readers gripped from start to finish." (Closer)

"Read it in two sittings. I literally had no choice. A fast and enthralling thriller, pitting a new, very human hero against one of the scariest psychos I've yet encountered in crime fiction." (Sunday Times best seller Paul Finch)

"Without doubt, this is one of the best first detective series I have read." (Woman's Way Magazine)

On to the next!

I’m still very much enthralled by these novels! Enjoying every aspect of Luc and Ava and their teams… knew the promotion was coming! Ready for the next one!

Outstanding, and nothing negative from me, but...

...not for readers who write negative reviews when a book has gory, cruel violence. In Perfect Prey, it is not gratuitous.
Every element that makes a police procedural gripping is here, but character development and interactions create the critical turning points. Not one character is extraneous, i.e. an extra. The plot doesn't follow a formula and it is intense. Backstory from the first book is smoothly woven into the dialogue and 3rd-person narration, so didn't irritate me (I had read that one first). The reader was one of the best I've heard: Scottish dialects, French, young American, upper crust Scotland Yard, women both old and young. Worth a credit, IMHO.

As good as the first one.

Another great story and learned some more about the characters. I look forward to listening to the rest of the series.

WOW

This is a very intense story. Many times while reading I'd think How scary is this woman's brain? Details, situations, storylines!!!

Another great one by Helen Fields

This series is amazing. Gruesome at times, especially in this book where there are some hideous murders.

Luc Callanach and his team have many threads to follow in this tale of the Dark Web. I seriously couldn’t put this down. The synopsis is there to read. I really liked this book.

I was worried that the new narrator would not be as good as the first book’s reader. He wasn’t as good but it wasn’t all that distracting. However, sometimes all the characters sounded the same.

Moving on to book 3 immediately.

I'm hooked

This series has got better & better, this one was great.
lots of action, character development of main characters, & new interesting characters.
It gave me a look into something I'm not familiar with the "dark net".

Excellent narrator

Rough in parts (tw for animal abuse and torture), but a really good read made better with an outstanding narrator.

Written well, but gory!

If you like gore, you’ll enjoy this book. For me it’s hard to listen to the over the top depictions of ways to kill. However, it was well written, I am vested in the characters, and the mystery has a good who-done-it to puzzle out.

Interesting and scary

This author writes violence with verve. The most compelling parts of the story for me are the interpersonal relationships between the police in the MIT and their actions to solve the mystery.. I skip ahead through the seemingly endless inner monologues and descriptions of the bad guys. The story loses nothing as far as i'm concerned and torture porn is not my thing. Maybe I'm too sensitive. I loved the cast of characters and the intricacy of the plot. We'll see how DI Callanach thrives after this.
