A dead man walks into a police station. He tells a tale - bizarre as it is grotesque - of kidnap and organ harvesting. John Baden's story of being held prisoner for 12 years sounds far-fetched - but it's all about to get much, much stranger. DI Ben Westphall has been given the case because of his background in MI6. He also has a knack for getting inside people's heads and seeing things others would miss. Westphall is no ordinary detective, and this is no ordinary case.

Great Story -- But NOT For The Faint Of Heart!
- By AK Raven on 06-27-17
By: Stuart MacBride
Publisher's Summary
The second in the terrifying DI Callanach crime series.
In the midst of a rock festival, a charity worker is sliced across the stomach. He dies minutes later. In a crowd of thousands, no one saw his attacker. The following week, the body of a primary school teacher is found in a Dumpster in an Edinburgh alley, strangled with her own woolen scarf.
DI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach have no motive and no leads - until around the city, graffitied on buildings, words appear describing each victim.
It's only when they realise the words are appearing before rather than after the murders that they understand the killer is announcing his next victim...and the more innocent the better.

Outstanding, and nothing negative from me, but...
...not for readers who write negative reviews when a book has gory, cruel violence. In Perfect Prey, it is not gratuitous.
Every element that makes a police procedural gripping is here, but character development and interactions create the critical turning points. Not one character is extraneous, i.e. an extra. The plot doesn't follow a formula and it is intense. Backstory from the first book is smoothly woven into the dialogue and 3rd-person narration, so didn't irritate me (I had read that one first). The reader was one of the best I've heard: Scottish dialects, French, young American, upper crust Scotland Yard, women both old and young. Worth a credit, IMHO.

Who’s on first
Nice idea for a mystery, but over run with characters. As each one has 2 names, the identity of each was chaotic. The research must have been extensive urging the author to use all that she learned. Needs more in depth character development and fewer players.

Another great one by Helen Fields
This series is amazing. Gruesome at times, especially in this book where there are some hideous murders.
Luc Callanach and his team have many threads to follow in this tale of the Dark Web. I seriously couldn’t put this down. The synopsis is there to read. I really liked this book.
I was worried that the new narrator would not be as good as the first book’s reader. He wasn’t as good but it wasn’t all that distracting. However, sometimes all the characters sounded the same.
Moving on to book 3 immediately.

I enjoyed the 1st book in this series, but this surpassed it, in every sense. The narration was fantastic, differentiating between accents dialects and the male female voices so that it was all so well understood. I hope that there will be a 3rd not too far away.

Excellent New Series
I've just finished this, the second book featuring DI Callanach and am massively impressed with Helen Field's writing. The narrators too have been excellent. I loved the first book and enjoyed this one even more: twisting plots, red herrings, characters I can genuinely care about - and some I can genuinely loathe! Though a bit gory for me at times, that is part of the genre and very well written. I hope Ms Fields continues with these well-crafted and interesting characters, including Tripp, Salter, Lively, et al, as well as the two excellent leads and I look forward to reading more in the future.

Put together well...
Firstly, I think the narration of this is considerably better than the last DI Callanach novel.
Secondly, although it relies on some pretty unlikely events, it does so in a manner that avoids being irritating, and the book is entertaining throughout.

An interesting tale
The story was quite good, but the over aggressive attitudes of the members of the police force really irritates me! Apart from it being utterly unbelievable, it is unpleasant, and I doubt that any organisation can function with that level of rudeness and aggression, both physical and vocal!
Also, There are many times when people don't react to situations as they would in real life!

This is the second book I listened too. The narrator is excellent. The story lines are Ok. A bit gory in places. The main character is a bit hard to like. He seems a bit all over the place and in a real situation the fractured coccyx would have laid him out and the deputy super character is a bit too silly. I will listen to the third.
