Story
The local cops haven't seen anything like this, but Jesse's L.A. past has made him all too familiar with floaters. This girl hadn't committed suicide; she hadn't been drowned; she'd been shot and dumped, discarded like trash. Before long it becomes clear that she had a taste for the wild life; and her own parents can't be bothered to report her missing, or even admit that she once was a child of theirs. All Jesse has to go on is a young man's school ring on a gold chain, and a hunch or two.

Publisher's Summary
The brilliant new Spenser novel from the beloved New York Times-best-selling author Robert B. Parker.
Called upon by The Hammond Museum and renowned art scholar Dr. Ashton Prince, Spenser accepts his latest case: to provide protection during a ransom exchange-money for a stolen painting.
The case becomes personal when Spenser fails to protect his client and the valuable painting remains stolen. Convinced that Ashton Prince played a bigger role than just ransom delivery boy, Spenser enters into a daring game of cat-and-mouse with the thieves. But this is a game he might not come out of alive....
Completed the year before he passed away, Painted Ladies is Spenser and Robert B. Parker at their electrifying best.

Highly recommend
Classic Spenser. This one is all good...plot, characterizations, etc...and no one but Mantegna should ever narrate a Spenser novel. I like the Jesse Stone novels better, but this is really an enjoyable listen. Highly recommend!

I said.. he said... spot said... jane said...
I could barley get through the first chapter from the I said, kate said, she said jungle. I swear to God this book is composed mostly of these words. Reads like a kids book. I'm still struggling to get through it. I doubt if I would recommend this book. I suppose if you "read" this book you just ignore the "saids", but listening is brutal. This is the first time I bought this author, if the rest of his books read this way it'll be the last. When I finally finish it I may write another review, but don't hold your breath I said.

I SAID---SHE SAID
Perhaps I am listening to too many books. Parker's use of "I said, she said, I said", and Joe Mantegna's narration bugged me for the first time in the Spencer series. The plot was OK and the humor was there as usual. I missed Hawk. Mantegna portrays him well. In this book all of the characters had a Joe Mantegna accent. As I said, maybe its me....

The incessant usage of the word "said" ruined this book for me, It was so distracting I stopped after an hour. Mr Montegna should have been given or requested more latitude in his reading.
