For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Wren Blythe has long enjoyed being among the Northwoods, helping her father with programming at a youth camp. But when a little girl in the area goes missing, an all-out search ensues, reviving the decades-old campfire story of Ava Coons, the murderess, who still roams the woods. The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

So when the baby shower comes around, I’m sitting on a velvet sofa in a posh hotel room, surrounded by balloons. But that afternoon, I finally learn the unbelievable truth. There is no baby....

Publisher's Summary
After the brutal murder of her father, Emily Quinn finds herself detained at the San Francisco County Jail, charged with first-degree murder for a crime she cannot remember.
Emily’s mother, a wealthy socialite, quickly distances herself from her troubled daughter. But in an attempt to salvage the family name, she hires world-renowned psychiatrist Daniel Lieberman to assist in Emily’s defense. The famed doctor - an aging, lonely psychiatrist with an addiction to sugar, caffeine, and understanding the human mind - quickly becomes sympathetic to Emily and her tortured childhood.
Together, Lieberman and Emily explore the frightening and twisted world of her damaged psyche, uncovering the complex reasons behind the young woman’s self-hatred and disconnected self-image. They develop an abiding partnership, weaving through unexpected revelations and disturbing secrets. Of particular interest to the doctor is Emily’s strange attachment to the imaginary girls she sketches...and is driven to personify.
The secrets hidden in Emily’s mind could help with her defense or confirm the death penalty case against her. But Lieberman senses other secrets hidden within the patient’s mind, particularly the events surrounding the unexplained death of her twin sister Penelope.
A gripping, twisting tale of psychological intrigue, Pages in the Wind enters the mostly uncharted realm of the human mind, seeking truth buried deep within Emily’s subconscious. Lieberman can help her uncover her past, but Emily is the one who has to face it - or remain damaged forever.

Hidden Secrets
Pages in the Wind by Sally Taylor De Smet is an emotional rollercoaster. There are so many hidden secrets and twists. The story takes place approximately 50 years ago. I enjoy psychological listens and found this one to be well done. Susan Marlowe is a fantastic narrator and brings the characters to life. She adds the right emotions and tone, while giving the characters distinguishable voices. Very well done!

Pages in the Wind is a smart, thrilling novel with complex characters and a comprehensive story line. As I listened, I loved it more and more. It combines family love with deception and personal trauma, as well as hope in a world of fear.

I could not put this book down, Wanting it to have more chapters, Not finished yet but wanted to say it was so good but the narrator seemed to sound robotic at times when she put so much emphases on the end of words like wouldnt, couldnt didnt etc...Voice for male character all sounded the same with same robotic tone at times, Over all though this was such a good read!!! Really loved this book and indeed the narrator.
The story was gripping from the start, heart breaking, with a build in tension that the narrator was able to recreate well.
Will be looking for similar listens.
