This is certainly one of Modglin’s best domestic thrillers I’ve come to read so far! Of course, with the exception of her amazing trilogy!
Small town, lots of secrets, old murders and new disappearances make this novel absolutely thrilling and one is unable to stop. I read it in one sitting and the plot twist, that Modglin’s plot twist always delivers!
If you’re in the mood for a good thriller with all the elements of human nature, you’ll find that monsters live among us. Oh, they do.

Enjoyable
When I saw an advertisement on FB for A Quiet Retreat by this author I was intrigued enough to listen to another o e of her books before the new one came out. I really liked this listen. Maybe the narration could have been better but I really liked the story plot with the twists and the who done it. I thought I had it all figured out but I didn’t. Now I want to hear more of her stories.

Secrets in an idyllic town
In a small town by a lake, particularly in one small cul-de-sac, secrets abound…secrets that will tear apart friendships. This story is told from the POV of one family member from three household…the mayor, the sheriff and the struggling mom whose husband has disappeared. The secrets all surrounding the lake. Good plot…bit frustrating at times but overall an enjoyable story. Great narration by new-to-me narrators.

Like the author but this book was disappointing. No characters to really love or hate and the story line was far fetched to say the least. The male voice was soap opera drama quality and his imitation of women voices were shrill & made them sound weak.
