From the author of the beloved national bestseller Migrations, a pulse-pounding new novel set in the wild Scottish Highlands.

Inti Flynn arrives in Scotland with her twin sister, Aggie, to lead a team of biologists tasked with reintroducing fourteen gray wolves into the remote Highlands. She hopes to heal not only the dying landscape, but Aggie, too, unmade by the terrible secrets that drove the sisters out of Alaska.

Inti is not the woman she once was, either, changed by the harm she’s witnessed—inflicted by humans on both the wild and each other. Yet as the wolves surprise everyone by thriving, Inti begins to let her guard down, even opening herself up to the possibility of love. But when a farmer is found dead, Inti knows where the town will lay blame. Unable to accept her wolves could be responsible, Inti makes a reckless decision to protect them. But if the wolves didn’t make the kill, then who did? And what will Inti do when the man she is falling for seems to be the prime suspect?

Propulsive and spell-binding, Charlotte McConaghy's Once There Were Wolves is the unforgettable story of a woman desperate to save the creatures she loves—if she isn’t consumed by a wild that was once her refuge.

This book was hard for me to listen to because I love wolves and basically worried about them. I persisted and it was so very worth it! The paths of the story are intricate and touched me deeply. I learned so much about wolves and also people. Touching and well rounded. A great writer who has captured the wilderness outside of us and also within. I will follow Charlotte McConaghy for more of her work! The reader, Saskia Maarleveid made the story real and intimate. She is most excellent and I hope to hear more from her as well!

Heart breaking and beautiful

This story line is all over the place, and is more of an emotional rant that often doesn’t connect well.

The story is over-done

Very enjoyable book. I listened in three days. It had an unexpected storyline. Beautiful characters too. Glad I chose it.

It’s always nice to learn something as you go. I knew almost nothing about wolves.

It was a good tale about a girl and her twin sister who grew up in the woods under the guidance of their Dad. Their Mother divorced their father and was in their lives from a distance.

They went to college and then to Scotland to place a den of wolves. They encountered many different types of resistance but in the end she settled there and had a baby and the wolves settled there too.
