Lot of action in just 2 hours!
Off the Grid was originally published in Black Water, a collection of Jane Yellowrock and it takes place between Blood Trade and Black Arts.
Jane is set to the Knoxville, TN area by NOLA Master suck head, Leo, to help solve the case of a missing vampire. Jane finds herself in the middle of a sicko religious cult that treats the women (and girls) has their “heavenly play things”.
While Jane is figuring out what the missing vampire has to do with the cult she runs into a young woman in the woods named Nell.
It doesn’t matter if the team of Faith Hunter and Khristine Hvam get together for a 16+ hour audio or for one that’s just 2 hours long like Off the Grid, they are going to grab you with Jane and entertain the hell out of you.
Off the Grid was a fun and action pack listen in the Jane Yellowrock universal and a nice way to introduce Nell Ingram the leading heroine in Hunter’s “Jane spin-off” series, Soulwood. The first book is titled, Blood of the Earth and it will be hitting the shelves in October 2015. And a little birdie told me that Khristine Hvam will be the narrator. So I’m super excited!

THIS IS BOOK 7.5 !
Audible has (when writing this) this listed as book 6.5 in the Jane Yellowrock series. This is wrong. "Off the grid" is book 7.5 in the series.
It won't ruin book 7 (Black Arts) completely if you read it out of order, but it does contain a couple of minor spoilers for book 7. So - best read before book 7.
A compact story written with obvious outrage at the story subject. Almost bloodless (what? yes!). The story villain is dealt with in a surprisingly satisfying way...
Khristine Hvam - great as always.

This is 7.5 not 6.5
So if you're reading the series for the first time skip it and read book 7 first. There are a couple minor spoilers for book 7 in the beginning.
I loved this novella! It was even better listening the second time as I've read all of Nell's novels now.

Short Intro to "Soulwood"
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Wish it was longer, at least a couple hours more.
Have you listened to any of Khristine Hvam’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Vham is always a treat to listen to. Always!!!
Was Off the Grid worth the listening time?
Yes, as I love both "Soulwood" books. I enjoy the mixture of "magic's". Vampires are not my favorites, but love Jane Yellowrock and Khristine Hvam

This can't be book 6.5
If you could sum up Off the Grid in three words, what would they be?
Great short story, but confusing. It can't be book 6.5 because the accident with Bitsa didn't happen until book 7, and was talked about in more detail in book 8. Also Jane couldn't have stopped by Molly's resteraunt or stopped by to see Molly's kids in book 6.5 because they didn't become friendly again until book 7. It's just a few little things that made me a little confused. Audible needs to list this book as book 7.5 or 8.5 so it makes more sense. Other than that, it's a great little story...I enjoyed it.
What does Khristine Hvam bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I love the narrator. She has the characters down pat.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I listened to it in one sitting.

Short story packs a punch
This short story is a bit darker than some of the longer novels. I hope the magic in the land element can be expanded later as I found that fascinating. The cults abuse of women and children was delicately handled but I still found it disturbing ... which it should. I did cheer when Yummy went off with her prey.

As always
Ever read a story and catch yourself "improving" on the writing? I have never had that experience with Faith Hunter. Her plots, character development and turn of phrase are delightful. This story is no exception even if it is way too short.
As with all of the Jane Yellowrock stories, the narration is great. I've never had to cringe at the southern accent nor been stopped short by mispronunciation of a treasured concept. And Beast? She is purrfect.
Encore!!

Great story, if a little over priced.
I loved this story, In fact I love all the Jane Yellowrock books, and Khristine Hvam did a fantastic jab as always. My only criticism is the price. It was a little expensive for such a short story, and it hasn't been made available for kindle so you can only buy it as an audio book.

Good Short Stor6y - Jane at work
What did you like most about Off the Grid?
This shows Jane working as enforcer and problem solver - no emotional involvement with the other main characters
What was one of the most memorable moments of Off the Grid?
When Jane and Beast go down the side of the cliff
Which character – as performed by Khristine Hvam – was your favourite?
I enjoy the way she portrays Beast
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No major emotions it was not an emotional story as far as I am concerned. Worthwhile listen.
Any additional comments?
I thought it was a little expensive for less than two hours listening but I am a sucker and will always buy any new Jane Yellowrock.

Fantastic series, both Jane Yellowrock & Soulwood
Even though this is a fairly quick listen, it is still a really engaging storyline with both Jane Yellowrock & the introduction of Nell Ingram, the main character of the Soulwood series.
I read this quite a while ago, before starting the Soulwood Series (which is an absolutely amazing series), but this was the first time I've listened to the audio. The narrator is so easy to listen to, really enjoy her performances of both Jane & Nell.
