Publisher's summary

Rome, AD 270. In the wake of the emperor’s marriage ban, rumors swirl that there is one man brave enough to perform wedding ceremonies in secret. A public notarius and leader of an underground church, Valentine believes the emperor’s edict unjust and risks his own life for the sake of his convictions. But as his fame grows, so do fears for his safety.

Iris, the daughter of a Roman jailor, believes regaining her sight will ease the mounting troubles at home. Her last hope rests in searching out Valentine and his church, but the danger of associating with people labeled a threat to the empire is great. Still, as Iris's new friends lead her to faith in God, Iris is drawn to Valentine, and they both begin to hope for a future together beyond the treacherous empire.

But when a past debt and a staggering betrayal collide, Valentine, Iris, and everyone they love must fight for their lives—and wrestle with trusting a God who can restore sight yet does not always keep His followers from peril.

A must-read of deep importance

This was my first title by Jamie Ogle. The audiobook version was excellent, and I plan to purchase the paperback for my favorites shelf. I was deeply moved by the characters and their plight. Never have a read an account that made the Christians of 3rd century Rome more accessible. The story is a beautiful letter of love to all our fallen brothers and sisters and the God we serve. The imagery in this book is expertly aimed at the heart of each reader. With Iris, we experience her blindness, her fear and the growth that not only brings her to the one true God, but keeps her standing in the face of cruelty and loss. With Valentine: I was encouraged to be unwavering in faith with his example of finding peace and courage that only God can provide. This book is important, and I will shout it from the rooftops. Read it!

I could see every beautiful detail of the world Ogle built

This was such a vibrant and heartrending (in the best way) story. The writing is so eloquent. I love how Ogle made me both laugh and cry. The faith in this story is rich and edifying. I literally couldn’t stop listening. I listened all the way through, only pausing to feed my kids. It’s 7:10 a.m. and I just finish. Worth losing a night of sleep. Can’t wait for more from Jamie Ogle.

The ease of understand Roman terminology and the flow of the story

What a wonderful and thought provoking book! If you are not already knowledgeable about what Christians endured in those times, this book with open up a floodgate of questions that you can stop yourself from going to research and find answers too! Jamie wrote a beautiful tribute to the St. Valentine and right in time for the holiday!

3.5 Stars

I enjoyed this story with both the historical background of Rome and the myth and legend of Valentine. It’s my understanding through separate study that possibly Valentine wasn’t just one man, but several. There isn’t a lot factually known about this individual(s). And what we see in Valentine’s Day today is rooted more in Roman myth and religion (Mythology), than Christianity.

I didn’t have a problem with the fictional take on Valentine knowing the discrepancies. The character was well represented in the storyline, I appreciate that the Ancient Roman culture was incorporated into the foundation of the story. However, what bothered me about this novel was the conversational aspect of the characters. It was modern throughout the book, both in essence and even in grammar. It gave the impression of listening to individuals who had been transported there from the future. For some readers this may not be an issue - it not uncommon in many historical fiction books today. For some readers like myself who spend a lot of time in historical study, it can be.

Overall, an inspirational and uplifting historical fiction with a Christian message.
