Story
This is how the world ends. Not with a bang, but with many nuclear bombs detonated around the planet. It was no longer a topic of conversation around the dinner table as in years past. Nobody was prepared, including the world's governments. Yet the threat was always real, and the devastation was predictable. The damage was incalculable. Millions died at the points of impact. Nuclear winter spread across the globe. A rapidly cooling climate shocked humanity and all living things...to their death.

Publisher's Summary
Nuclear war may kill millions.
Nuclear Winter will kill billions.
International best-selling author Bobby Akart, one of America's favorite storytellers, delivers up-all-night thrillers to listeners in 245 countries and territories worldwide.
Every war begins with a first shot. The shot heard ‘round the world at Lexington and Concord in 1775 birthed a nation. Less than a century later, cannons firing on Fort Sumter, South Carolina, thrust that same nation into a civil war. The assassination of an obscure archduke sparked a chain of events leading to World War I. The dastardly bombing of Pearl Harbor led America into the Second World War.
Akart's new novel, Nuclear Winter First Strike, depicts a world on the edge of nuclear Armageddon. Will history repeat itself as warring nations take their battles to the highest level of destruction? Can America avoid being drawn into these conflicts beyond her borders?
Nuclear Armageddon hangs over us like a mighty sword and ordinary Americans will be caught in the crosshairs.
This is more than the story of nuclear conflict. It’s about the devastating effects wrought by nuclear winter. Our possible future is seen through the eyes of the Albright family, whose roots stretch back to the early settlement of the Florida Keys. Hank Albright, a widower and proprietor of the Driftwood Key Inn, is the epitome of the laid-back islander inhabiting the Keys. His brother, Mike, is a homicide detective for the Monroe County Sheriff’s department. Along with his wife, Jessica, a paramedic and member of the sheriff’s department's water emergency team, they become involved in the investigation of a sadistic serial killer.
Hank’s son, Peter Albright, is a reporter in Washington, DC, covering the Department of State. He’s unknowingly thrust into the middle of the conflict in the Middle East. Upon his return home, he begins to unravel a conspiracy leading to an unexpected dynamic between the president, the secretary of state, and North Korea. As the drumbeats of war beat louder, Hank’s oldest child, Lacey McDowell, begins to sense the warning signs. Along with her husband, Owen, and teenage son, Tucker, she begins to prepare for a hasty exit from their home in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Will America become embroiled in the nuclear conflict? Will the president cross the Rubicon, that point of no return, after which lives and cities may be destroyed? For the Albrights, like their fellow Americans, their lives are about to change forever.
It was not our fight, but it became our problem.
Bobby Akart has delivered intense, up-all-night thrillers that have you whispering just one more chapter until the end.

Reminds me of Rawles but not as good
I really enjoy these hard sci-fi apocalyptic books but not this one. The author sounds knowledgeable about most of it. I did laugh my buttocks off when he stated marijuana was a gateway to meth. He mixed some metaphors about sheep walking off cliffs. To me this reads like the author is jamming his world view hard into the book sacrificing the story; the same way Rawles and the later books of Clancy.

tedious
Huge fan of the genre. This book way too tedious and long-winded character development that for all it's effort, never gets you invested in them. I barely made it to chapter 17 and just couldn't take anymore. Seems like I recall liking this author in the past though just now, the series doesn't come to mind. The narrator is of course, fantastic! But sadly, I'm unable to give it any more of my attention.

Excellent topic for story telling!
This is an excellent topic for story telling. I really enjoyed this first book in the series and the characters created for the story telling. In this story telling the author has strayed a bit more than he normally does from factual reality.
The book clearly understates the ballistic missile defense capabilities of the USA and Japan. Both nations have Aegis systems at sea that are capable of defeating ballistic missiles. Both nations also have Patriot batteries that are capable ballistic missile defense systems.
The nuclear winter scenario is unlikely especially in regional conflicts. Carl Sagan got a lot of favorable reviews when he was pushing the nuclear winter scenario. He got into serious credibility problems when he and the nuclear winter researchers he was fronting were routed by the realities of the Middle East oil well fires.
Some will remember his somber warnings of regional and global climate problems predicted by the software models used for nuclear winter modeling. He said the oil fires would take at least five years to extinguish instead of the two years predicted. He also forecasted global cooling and crop failures. The fires were out in 18 months and there were no global or even regional climate consequences. Sadly the media pundits did not follow up with Carl about the complete failure of the computer models.
Looking forward to book 2!

Long winded tale
Too much effort put in the “why” and “who” of the characters. Slow crawl to the story actually getting to the apocalypse event beginning to effect the characters. Hard to hang in there while listening especially with the long diatribes of the characters. His early books were much better. These seem like efforts to draw out the story into series.

Pretty Good Story
Nuclear weapons are the scariest weapons that man ever created. That being said, nuclear weapons are no match for a single volcano in terms of power and impact on the Earth's atmosphere. Bobby Akart writes some entertaining disaster books and this first book in the series seems to reinforce that. The book starts out slow in terms of story and character development. None of the characters will jump out at you but all together, they seem to glue the story so that interest is never lost. The unusual geopolitical situations that led to nuclear exchanges were mildly believable but focus should remain that this is fiction and only loosely based on the real world. As always, Kevin Pierce is amazing and makes this audio book series that much better.

Not enough value for a credit
It's way too short to justify a credit. Would have made a decent trilogy but I feel like it was kept short in an exploitative way for profits.
Story is ok, feels like it was written by your Fox News loving uncle who actually went to college.
Narrator fits the story well.
